Diablo® III

Crashing issues / think im cursed

Hey all,
Desperate for a solution at this stage.. heres the history

I started crashing around july 2012, usually in combat with lots of enemies [ but not always] happens more frequently on my wizards than my dh's.

So i took a break till about a month ago, and the crashing still persists. My computer parts were old and i thought it must be the problem, note the problems include both crashing and game lock up for 4-10seconds then the game would resume. [Not windows crashing]

I have since upgraded alot of my parts I will list primarily new parts as the exact same problem is still there, i will also list them in the order upgraded, note at each upgrade stage i tested and still had the same problem before trying a new part

-[edit] a re-install of windows has occured inbetween me taking a break and resuming this game

-500 Watt power supply

-Replaced the motherboard, ram and processor at same time now using
Intel core i5-3570k @ CPU @ 3.4Ghz
Memory 8192MB Ram
Gigabyte ultra durable motherboard [not sure if motherboards have specs]

-Trying my friends GTX 460 [instead of my gtx 250]

-[edit] A complete re-download of diablo 3 [last night, problem persists]

-The only thing i havent replaced is the HDD and monitor[lol], however ive attempted this
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5149178443
Running mpq's off a pendrive, definatly reduced start up lag and overall smoother gameplay, yet crashing and 4-10second screen freezing continues

So yea basically a completely new computer, apart from the hard drive
could this be the problem? i believe i am curse to always have this problem with diablo 3

Ive spent alot of money trying to remove this issue as i only enjoy HC mode in this game, and crashing isnt worth the risk.

Ive tried many things, run as admin, lowered graphics, lowered fps, trilnear filtering off,
[Have no issues in other games]

Really need help here guys, i cant seem to find similar issues caused by hard drives, but if i have a new everything else... =(

I think its also worth mentioning my friend has been running the game fine on the same motherboard/ram/cpu as me and on his gtx 460 when he was using it

Reu,

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

Reu,

Your use of a 75Hz refresh rate seems odd when the monitors native rate is only ~60Hz.

Native Mode: 1440 x 900(p) (59.887Hz).

That could be causing some strange issues since vertical sync is enabled. The game's going to try to keep it at 75 fps and if it can't for any reason, it will drop to roughly half that and probably keep cycling up and down as allowed. Try setting it to 60 in game. I'd also disable the fps limiters you have enabled altogether. Let vertical sync keep the frame rates constant and at a max of 60. You can remove the LowFX setting too.

What is the exact model number/brand of your power supply?
Low cost (cheaply made) power supplies can cause the exact problem you are having.
A 500 watt PS is about the minimum that your system needs, but if its a cheap brand it will not function properly at full load.

Not all 500 watt power supplies are created equally.

So went out and got a new harddrive 7200 rpm and a 750 watt power supply,
installed windows then foolishly lost my HC char on the first test run.

re-leveled and had no problems until group play in arreat crater. Crashed again in arreat.

Basically have an entire new pc aside from the input devices, monitor and case.
not sure how to change the refresh rate, but ive unchecked the fps boxes.

Maybe its the latest nvidia drivers?
I really dont know what to do, changed every part and continue to crash, i really am cursed

if the line in d3 prefs
DisplayModeRefreshRate "75"
is what you were talking about, i will set it to 60 and test again

Please help?
Why is this still happening on a completely new computer? could i of bought a faulty part? i just feel so bad as i bought the new computer to play d3 hc reliably.
could it be account related?

Exact same problem, 5-10second game lock ups or just d3 app crash.

This line in my d3 prefs
DisplayModeRefreshRate "75"
Keeps reseting to 75 even if i change it to 60 and save it, could this be an issue?

This is my current d3 prefs when the latest temporary game freeze happened
i went back to low fx as it crashed the other day as well [post new power supply/HDD]

Reu,

Have you tried changing the refresh rate in the in-game menu options?

I haven't been able to locate any specs information on your monitor (AOC 916W) at all. If it has a DVI connection, are you able to use a DVI cable instead of the standard VGA connection you're using now?

I see nowhere in game options to change 'refresh rate' i set the slider bar to 60.if this is what you mean, my monitor only takes VGA. Do you really think my monitor could be causing this?

Also i made my prefs file read only after making this change DisplayModeRefreshRate "60"
and its no longer over writing itself.

However i just crashed on azmodan with these latest changes and lost my new 60HC DH,
Perhaps its my windows install or input/display devices, which really doesnt seem the case as the app crashes, the mouse still moves and i can ctrl+alt+delete end process.

Yet i dont know how the games written or exactly what process is causing the crash, and the same problem has persisted through two different computers [ im still using my old case as well ]

I think at this stage i just need to walk away from the game, even though i really wanted to keep playing and was really enjoying the game.

Almost wish i could refund my new PC.

That's because the file is now read-only. This isn't a fix for anything really.

Make sure you're not using one of the windowed modes. If you are, you won't be able to adjust the refresh rate in the game.

Sorry where is the option to adjust refresh rate? i cant find it in game?

is DisplayModeRefreshRate "60" the same option? i will adjust in game if i can find it, do you mean the slider bar? if so, this is set to 60

I was hoping DisplayModeRefreshRate "60" was the same thing as the ingame option you speak of, that is why i made the file read only hoping i could force it to use

DisplayModeRefreshRate "60"
rather than
DisplayModeRefreshRate "75"

I cant see anything related to refreshrate in the video options of diablo 3

Reu ,

You're right, my mistake. I was thinking of World of Warcraft where they let you select the refresh rate as well as the resolution. The option isn't available in Diablo III. Forcing it as you did would normally be fine but as it keeps changing, something is telling the game that your monitor's refresh rate is 75Hz. I don't see where that's coming from based on what dxdiag is reporting as the native rate.

Monitor Name: AOC 916W
Monitor Model: 916W
Monitor Id: AOC1916
Native Mode: 1440 x 900(p) (59.887Hz)

I don't really think the refresh rate being higher like it is is going to cause the symptoms you have though. I'd expect the screen to maybe black out occasionally but it would have a message to the effect "something was out of range" coming from the monitor itself. I can't see it causing the game to freeze or crash.

Posting your D3Debug.txt file may help.

It's located in the main Diablo III game folder. Edit out your account name first though. It's going to appear in a few places in the file. Try to grab the file just after the problem occurs.

Hmm,
Do you think if i change my monitor it might help? are monitors known to cause d3 application issues? The crash i get might update the d3debug file yet the crash itself doesnt prompt with one of those 'submit problem' windows.

My problem is the crash can happen anywhere between 2hours of gameplay and 10hours, usually in act 3 in group play.

However i have no characters still alive to test for 2-10hours of act 3 group play, as i just cant stomach softcore for more than 15minutes.

Im reluctant to reroll as i do believe i am infact cursed to always crash[its a weird feeling really knowing that with all these changes ive made i continue to crash, almost like d3 and crashing are a package deal]

however if you think changing my monitor will clear up the issue ill give it another shot, and when the crash happens ill post my debug file.

Im a fool i should of been testing on the PTR when i had my chars alive, espeically my wizard as she caused the most crashes

Did some more testing with the following changes,
different hdmi cable monitor/keyboard/mouse, no sound plugged in, the fronst usb's and the cd drive unplugged.
got the freeze problem about 10minutes in and 2hours in, didnt crash. recovered after about 9 seconds, both in arreat crater
when checking over the debug log i noted something that happened during the time period of one of these issues in arreat crater

the freeze happened on this map a3Dun_Crater_Level_02

Did more testing, disabled all sound in windows [default sound device, secondary sound device and disabled windows audio in windows services]

Yet 7 second screen freeze happened again

the times on all these are the times of the freeze up and the duration of the freeze up pretty match matches these reports

im glad ive identified the problem its odd it happened on both my computers, which makes me wonder what still remains, perhaps this is a windows 7 ultimate issue as ive tried multiple nvida driver versions with the same issue
