Is should be possible to get higher than flawless square gems. Make them drop like legendary items with a chance to get radiant star gems and we can make the next level or anything. having to buy or craft all the way up there is a killing and really expensive. either reduce the cost to make gems or allow higher levels to drop.
I strongly agree with your statement - there should be different levels of gems that drop in Inferno difficulty, instead of them all being flawless squares. They should have gems of different qualities drop in a structure similar to the runes of Diablo 2, patch 1.13 where the low-mid runes (eg. ral and shael - number 8 and 13 of 33 runes respectively) dropped the most frequently on hell difficulty and high runes such as ber and jah accounted for only about 1/5,000 of all runes dropped.
Even in D2, about 10% of gem drops in Hell were chipped, 20% were flawed, 30% were medium and 40% flawless.
So what I'm suggesting is to have 5% of all gems that drop in Inferno be chipped, 7% flawed, 10% regular, 12% flawless, 14% perfect, 16% radiant, 18% square, 14% f.square, 2.5% p.square, 1% r.square, 0.35% star, 0.1% f.star, 0.04% p.star and 0.01% r.star and zero for marquise gems.
Changing the drop rates of gems will screw people up who sell, or are planning to sell HQ gems at the AH in the short term, but it should make this game just that bit more enjoyable in the long term.
