I would love to see other than freeze builds viable after 1.0.8.

Nice work malakai - proof that freeze is not needed for wizzy to roll on. Wish they'd nerf it I think it would blow open wiz compendium but something needs to be done about our procs and damage for cross class parity.

They've been viable long b4 that here me when reflect was hard 1.0.6 with no freeze.

I make plenty of no freeze builds work.

They just are not as efficient. Viable tho.

Freeze is OP/IMBA so we all gravitate towards it.

Guess what - still is OP/IMBA in patch 1.0.8. Thing gives 40% more damage first of all then gives so much defenses cos they frozen. Then it holds them in one spot for maxium procs and DPS to be brought on monster,. No brainer. Nothing will change

robert the prob is that its hard to pass on a direct 20% dmg buff so u want to get some ice in the build to proc coldbloded, and probably nova so u can get a nother direct 15% to direct damage or buff to cc....

cold just buffs us too much to let it pass.

Yea, Cold Blooded is pretty much a must-have Passive, so every halfway decent build needs Frost Nova, Blizzard, Frost Hydra, or Ice Armor to apply it. Exceptions are Spectral Blades builds that have a cold ammy or ring, and Ray of Frost builds. Personally, I don't like relying on Scoundrel to apply it because he does some wonky stuff a lot of the time (like running away when he's not even close to mobs).

Anyhow, on one hand I agree with Aimless that if they nerfed FN it would maybe allow the developers to take a deeper look at our other abilities so that they could perform better without always having to factor the possibility of FN and the dps boost coupled with the survivability boost it provides into the equation all the time (longest sentence ever). With the upcoming patch and the massive mob density boost, FN is even stronger than ever, able to provide almost 100% uptime on 15% bonus CC with Deep Freeze. And since it can freeze an unlimited number of targets, any extra challenge that the mob density change brings is negated.

On the other hand, nerfing FN would piss off A LOT of people. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but in a game like this where people spend real money on their toons, that kind of stuff doesn't go over so well with the masses. If they would have "killed" SNS and/or FN much, much earlier on in the game's life, it wouldn't be that big of an issue. But it's probably too late now unless they have some plans for the expansion. It would probably require a decently large overhaul of the class. Something along the lines of removing all cooldowns except for things like Archon, turning Critical Mass into something else (+5% CC and +50% CHD?), and then making everything cost AP, with the most powerful ones (like FN) costing a ton of AP to cast, and then reworking the AP regeneration and APoC systems to balance everything.

Black ice + meteor is great. If meteor kills an enemy, and you are shooting ray of frost in the direction of the enemy when it dies, it triggers black ice. So you can get a bunch of black ice patches by bombing them with meteor and then shooting with RoF waiting for the meteor(s) to hit.

Doing something like this
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#ZPXQYT!gWh!cYZZcb

Perhaps not the best rune choices on some skills, but it is for maximum coolness. I use SoJ and oculus for meteor cost reduction as well. Along with a lifesteal spear and prioritizing CC / CD over attack speed. Near perma frozen on 3 enemies, but it suffers versus single targets. The trick is to lure a bunch of mobs into the elites, trigger 15+ black ice patches just using a meteor or 2 and half a second of RoF.

I guess you could do it without frost nova, but it would be difficult not using crystal shell. Which I guess you'd want to use the pink thunderstorm and the AP regen passive if not using diamond skin prism. Anyways just give meteor and black ice a try and see what you can do with that.

Arcane torrent with the 15% damage increase and archon explosion rune is something to think about, though I haven't found a build that utilizes these skills that I'm satisfied with.

don't you think hydra is much better in slot rather than ROF in that fork lightning build?

I've run your freeze build with 6/30 FrostBurns. Only good build I have found using Ray of Frost as the main damage dealer.

The only thing I ask is that you don't suggest using Frost Nova since I'm personally boycotting that spell. :P

Ha! I found it funny you posted that as that was going to be one of my suggestions. I noticed all your builds are very similar in that you are virtualy melee range using explosive blast and blur. When looking for fun alternative builds to SNS or Archon, that was something I personally was trying to avoid (spamming explosive blast especially.)

Frost nova in those type of builds isn't spammable, so I'm not sure I really see the aversion to it, and it fits those type of skills (disintegrate esp) like a glove. Are you just boycotting it because it basically broke the wizard class?

Just for fun, here are the Forked Lighning and Disintegrate builds I've been running in 1.07. I'd imagine they'd only be stronger in 1.08.

Disintegrate:

Forked Meteor:
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#UQYgPO!deg!ZYcZaZ

For the forked build, when solo, I sub in cold blooded for conflagration.

Your builds look great, though, I'll have to try with explosive blast and blur (and your storm armor reactive armor idea looks interesting as well.)

I'm always looking for alternative builds to SNS/Archon, so thanks a lot for sharing.

As an aside, do you find that Chaos Nexus outshines the other disintegrate runes by a pretty large margin? I haven't found the others nearly as good, and with the 1.08 density buffs, I'd think that would get even worse.

For AoE stuff if you use Arcane Hydra, yes. It was what I was using at first because I really wanted to do an MP10 Blizzard/Hydra/FL video. But it just takes soooooo long to kill single yellow elites (and other high HP single mobs) without RoF in the build.

At 1.89 APS, FL hits 4 times a second for 45% weapon damage per main beam. Against 3 targets and with 50% CC, that's 400% weapon damage per second against those 3 targets due to the additional charged bolts from critting. And of course, any extra charged bolts hitting other targets. But against a single target, it's only 180% weapon damage since the charged bolts cannot hit the target they spawn from. Adding, say, Arcane Hydra would only add 180% weapon damage to that single target, but that extra only has 50% CHD since Hydra doesn't scale with that stat. In comparison, Ray of Frost is 560% weapon damage per second at 1.89 APS against a single target. Plus RoF has a coefficient of .333, so it procs CM rather often so you can spam Explosive Blast with it often enough to make it worth it against a single target. And if you can get a full AD stack before channeling RoF, it's just sick single target DPS.

Another good thing about using RoF is that it seems like channeled spells proc the heck out of Shocking Aspect for some reason.

All but 1 use Explosive Blast, yea. You just can't beat the non-attack turn using nature of the spell for max dps output. Wizard as a ranged damage dealer is a myth at max MP pretty much, so EB + CM just makes sense for most builds. It's more damage, doesn't take an attack turn, helps keep you alive by healing you if you have good LS and LoH, and hits everything around you so you can take out stuff that's behind you and to the sides if you're focusing your main attack on something in front of you.

Only one of the builds I posted about uses Blur (the Disintegrate build), and that was only because I couldn't find anything else to use there that would help with the build. The -5 Disintegrate helm I used for the video only has 151 Int, 4% CC -5 Disintegrate cost, and 10 APoC; no vit, no AR, no bonus armor, so Blur actually helped make up for that.

Frost nova in those type of builds isn't spammable, so I'm not sure I really see the aversion to it, and it fits those type of skills (disintegrate esp) like a glove. Are you just boycotting it because it basically broke the wizard class?

That's part of the reason. The other part being that I like to show that you don't need it to succeed like everyone thinks you do. Plus it takes the fun out of the game for me. I don't like playing the game on pause. I like to interact with the mobs and their abilities and overcome them if possible by using situational awareness and reacting quickly. That way if I fail, I know it's my fault and I can learn from the mistake(s) and get better.

Chaos Nexus is the easiest to work with, and generally speaking it's the best Disintegrate rune. Entropy has it's upsides, too. You just have to know how to work with it, what other abilities compliment it, and have the right kind of gear for it. I'll have a video up hopefully in about a week once I sort through some other stuff.

Updated with Entropy + Molten Impact video. In the same build no less.

Video link:

From the description:

Build used:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#RPYQhT!XWg!YaYaaZ

The gear used had -5 Disintegrate cost (from Stone of Jordan), and 10 APoC (Storm Crow helm). Power of the Storm rune gave -3 AP cost to everything, and Astral Presence increased my AP regen by 2 per second.

The basic idea behind the build was to maximize damage per AP spent for Meteor, Explosive Blast, and Entropy. Most people, when approaching a Meteor-type build, try to gear to spam as many Meteors as possible, but usually wind up falling short and running dry. Instead of doing that, I opted to make each Meteor hit as hard as possible with the gear I had readily available. That way instead of spending 150 AP to cast 3 Meteors to do 1.5-2m damage, I only had to spend 50 AP to do the same amount of damage. Although the build uses CM and Frost Nova, it doesn't completely rely on procs to operate, so less casts was ok. And with enough cost reduction coupled with APoC and low APS, Entropy returns a decent amount of AP provided you hit enough targets, providing some of the fuel the build needs to run.

The only change to the build I'd probably make would be to swap out Cold Blooded passive for Conflagration. This is because the mobs aren't always frozen, but they're almost always burning from Meteors, possibly leading to an overall dps increase.

Gear-wise, this would probably run a lot smoother using a 1.2 APS spear or mace class weapon coupled with a Triumvirate source with APoC. But since the AH is currently still down due to them fixing the gold exploit, I was unable to procure such a weapon for the video. Hence the Skorn, which actually wound up working quite well due to the massive weapon damage and huge Lifesteal (I have 6% on mine).

If you're used to builds that have high APS, you'll find this build quite slow, muddy, and clunky at first. Once you get used to the slow cast times, and if you have enough mitigation and healing to survive the gaps between casting stuff, it works quite well in most areas.

I know I said that I was boycotting Frost Nova, but it really makes a lot of sense in this build, as you'll see in the video. It's pretty amazing how fast Meteor + Entropy can reset cooldowns with CM, even using a Skorn.

Anyhow, enjoy the video. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Love your builds. The forked meteor build I linked above worked sort of similar in that you don't cast a lot of meteors, but when you do they hit hard. These builds are a lot of fun because they don't revolve around the same skill being spammed endlessly, so I recommend folks giving them a try.

Still not sure I can allow myself to bring explosive blast back into the mix, though ;)
