Diablo® III

What the? Reduces melee dmg by 6% is 5.6%?

I bought an inna's chest which reduces melee dmg by 6%.

In game this is showing as 5.6%. Are they supposed to be able to round this? Does this mean theoretically you can either get a 5.6% reduction inna or a 6.4% one and it will not look any different on the AH. Both will show as 6%.

(1-0.06)(1-0.06) = 0.8836 = 11.64% reduction

... No. Just like how armor and all res both have diminishing returns as the value increases, all the damage reduction affixes do the same.

The reduction and diminishing return makes it impossible to stack over 50%, just like CCR where you can only get 65% with every single possible CCR on gear (w/o shield).

If I use Gloom + Sentry turret. Is this also diminishing or just adding it together?

35+15 = 50% damage reduction

or

(1-0.35)x(1-0.15) = 44.75% damage reduction

adding

it's multiplicative: 44.75% reduction....and Multiplicative does not mean "diminishing"; Diminishing returns would describe tapering effective gains.

Mitigation% is asymptotic , approaching 100% approaches infinite survival; Devs use x/(x+c) to straighten effective returns on armor/res for linear increases in eHP/survival. Without the x/(x+c) formula points added to armor/res would accelerate with each addition.

to avoid that same asymptotic scaling mechanic, reductive values(%) are multiplicative (not additive)

6% inna's yields an effective 6% reduction in damage you would be taking without it. same with sentry 15% and gloom 35%, each one of them extends the survival of your character by exactly the listed x%; this does not mean taking 1/2 damage and 1/2 damage = god mode invincibility

a) you take 15% less damage when inside the guardian turret bubble = 85% remains
b) When gloom is on that 85% is dropped to 65% of it's value (.85*.65) = 55.25% remaining

in (a) you went from 100 to 85, that a difference of 15/100 = 15% more survival than without it just as the rune states

in (b) you went from 85 damage now you take 55.25, and that is a difference of (85-55.25)/85) = 35% more survival than without it, just as it states

inns 6% is giving you 6% more survival than before, it is not a diminishing effect; people just throw that word around because it's more accessible than math
