No Signal display loss with GeForce GTX 295

Intermittently while playing, I will get a complete loss of signal from my video card on my primary display. I have two monitors. The primary monitor where I run D3 in Fullscreen Windowed mode goes black. The cursor and sound are active for about 3-5 seconds and then I lose all drivers. The primary monitor displays the "no signal" error indicating it is no longer receiving any data from the card. The secondary monitor remains on, probably because it is plugged in to a different card. However, the loss of all drivers means I have to shut down my computer and completely reboot.

I first noticed the issue the first time I played in Act III where there are a lot of various effects on screen. I chose the Low FX option in the video settings and made sure Vsync was enabled. The seemed to fix things. I then got to the end of Act IV and couldn't complete the Diablo encounter because the issue occurred every time I got to Phase 3 of the fight (where there are a lot of spell effects going on). I did a little more research and attempted lowering my Max Foreground FPS to 40. This *seemed* to help enough that I was finally able to complete the final fight against Diablo.

However, the problem still occurs intermittently, usually when there are a lot of enemies on screen and I'm doing my "oh god they're on me, buttonmash explode ever spell I have" reaction. =)

I already have SLI disabled since other games I play have issues with SLI as well (sad to have multiple cards and be unable to run most games actually using multiple cards.)

On the recommendation in another thread, I went into my Nvidia control panel, specifically added D3 to the 3D settings management list and forced Single Display performance mode. I also went into the D3Prefs file and lowered my HardwareClass from 6 to 5.

None of these things has solved the issue, though they do seem to have lowered the frequency of occurrence.

I am fairly certain it is NOT an overheating issue. I have experienced the "reload screen" issue from card overheating in other games, and keep a rack of canned air on hand to clean out my cards regularly. Just to be safe, I cleaned them again after I started getting this No Signal error, but it has not affected anything that I can see. Other games where I DO get the "reload screen" issue when the card overheats are running fine at the moment.

I can provide a dxdiag.txt file for my current configuration if it is needed by support.

I know that you feel this issue is not due to overheating, but we should look into that first just to be sure.

Here's how to check:

1. Download MSI Afterburner: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm
2. Once installed, launch MSI Afterburner.
3. The window pane on the right will show the GPU temperature. Make a note of the temperature before the game starts.
4. Then launch the game and keep MSI Afterburner running.
5. Run the game for about 10 minutes or until the graphics become distorted, and then go back and check what the temperature is currently sitting at.

Let me know the before and after results of the temperature.

Also, please post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista or 7, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste the entire dxdiag file into your reply.

Thanks for the reply.

I ran the afterburner tool. Temp varies between 56C (at rest) to at most 64C (peak). Most of the time while playing the GPU is around 61C-62C. I will continue to monitor the temp tho to see if there is any change when the loss of signal actually occurs.

I have the same problem.

It's not because of overheating since the temperature hasn't gone above 77 C.
Grayclaw

I ran the afterburner tool. Temp varies between 56C (at rest) to at most 64C (peak). Most of the time while playing the GPU is around 61C-62C. I will continue to monitor the temp tho to see if there is any change when the loss of signal actually occurs.

1. The video card temperatures are fine. Lets try checking the CPU temperatures to make sure there are no issues there.

Download HWMonitor to be able to see that temperature.

2. If the CPU temp are OK, download FurMark GPU Stress Test. This is a tool that is specifically designed to stress the video card to it's max capacity to see if there may be a problem with the video card itself.

Here's the link where FurMark can be downloaded: http://www.geeks3d.com/20110628/furmark-1-9-1-furmark-1-8-5-download-gpu-stress-test-burn-in-graphics-card-opengl/

Once downloaded you will want to run FurMark and then click on the "BURN-IN Test" button. Be sure to read the caution pop-up.

Let the test run for about 10 minutes or until you notice any odd video issues. Keep an eye on the temperature to note how high it gets. The max temp rating for your card is 105 degrees Celsius, so you'll want to stop the test before that temp. is reached.

***Do not leave the system unattended while running this test.***

Let me know what happens.

I forgot to mention that there is a newer video driver available. Lets install the driver to see if that helps.

Here's a link for the driver download: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-301.42-whql-driver.html

When you are going to install the driver I would like for you to select "Custom Install" > Uncheck everything except for the graphics driver > Check the "Perform a clean install" box > Continue with the install

Very nice to see this thread, as my issues are identical with a gtx 285. I eagerly await your results as I have followed all of these steps too except for the clean driver install. (I just did it the messy way :)).

I'll stay quiet, I'm not trying to hijak. Just want to say thanks for posting!
I have a similar issue, when i start d3 my video card fan kicks on pretty loud and then it goes to no signal, thing is i cant check the temp unless i restart my computer and get the signal back, at that point it doesnt matter cuz the temp is different than what it was when i start d3.
Had the no signal issue occur this morning while attempting to fight the Skeleton King on Hell. I was monitoring the GPU temps at the time. There were no spikes or other odd peaks on any of the graphs.

Downloaded HWMonitor. Monitored the CPU temps while playing D3. Didn't see any temp over 60C after going back and killing the Skeleton King on Hell. =)

Shut down D3 and ran the FurMark test for 10 minutes. The GPU under load climbed to 74C with the fan at 75% and held steady for the last 5 minutes of the test. No graphical issues occurred while running the test.

I just downloaded and installed the new graphic driver from your link. I will continue to play and see if the issue still occurs now that the new driver is installed. Note that I have not changed any of the other settings I originally implemented to reduce the frequency of the issue (still at Low FX, 40FPS max foreground, vsync, etc.)

Lets leave the settings alone for now. If the issue stops, while on the lower settings, we can then try increasing them back to their default setting to see if the issue starts up again.

Unfortunately the problem is still happening. I had it happen late last night while in Act II (again lots of effects on screen) as I was fighting a large pack. However, I am not convinced that many effects are the only issue. I have noticed that the problem seems to occur most often after I have been running D3 for several hours continuously, not necessarily playing intensely all that time, but just having the game running, be it at menus, in the AH, switching between characters or just being "idle" in town.

I'm wondering if we might be seeing something related to a memory leak or specific registry conflict. I realize you are not in over the weekend, so I will look for a post from you on Monday. I will see what other research and testing I can do in the meantime.

Thanks for your help so far!
Hi guyz
I had the same problem what seems to fixed it is that i uninstalled SP1 from my windows 7.
If u still have the problem give it a try :)

1. The previous driver I linked you has had some instability reports, so it might be better to try an older driver.

Here's a link for the driver download: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-295.73-whql-driver.html

When you are going to install the driver I would like for you to select "Custom Install" > Uncheck everything except for the graphics driver > Check the "Perform a clean install" box > Continue with the install

2. Can you try playing with SLI enabled?

I was able to install the new/old driver yesterday evening. I played for a few hours and did not experience the problem BUT... in my experience that is not yet enough testing time to determine if the problem has been resolved. I will continue to test that as I can today.

If that does not seem to help I will try changing the SLI settings.

Unfortunately, I have not received an email from you. I made sure to check my junk mail box as well as another mailbox it might have gone to (an older email I used to use on my bnet account). While that other box had "invites" to the Mists beta (completely fake) there were no support messages. I have received mails from blizzard support before when I have put in in-game tickets from WoW so I'm not sure why yours wouldn't be coming through. Is there a domain I should allow in my Outlook settings? Perhaps it is being refused before it gets to my Junk folder.
I am closely following this thread, as my issue is exactly the same. I'm hoping that after the next patch, this issue will be resolved... and no further tinkering will be needed in order to play.
This problem became so bad for me, I began losing the signal no matter what game I was playing, and ultimately it ended up frying my GPU... The damage from the heat did my card in, and my drivers shut down even when running Diablo 2. I just ordered the 560 Ti... Im not looking to fry a brand new $250 card because of a very elegant firmware/driver/programming issue. This issue is a bad one... My hair started going gray once I learned the game was unplayable entirely. Why did this have to happen? Why can't one change the past? *heroic musing pose* *creates time machine and tries to save the slain GPUs of D3*
