People being banned for using Linux....

When users think of emulators, they think of programs like Dosbox or zsnes. These applications run as virtual machines and are slow, having to emulate each processor instruction. Wine does not do any CPU emulation - hence the name "Wine Is Not an Emulator."

Some people argue that since Wine introduces an extra layer above the system a Windows application will run slowly. While technically true, Wine is no different from any other software library in this regard; even newer versions of Windows must load extra resources to support older applications.

Not an emulator, sorry dudes.

The most reasonable course of action has already been suggested; have your cadre of banned buddies call customer service and explain the problem. Even if you haven't been banned yet, you can still open a support ticket asking about this; might as well preempt them with your concerns so that if you do get banned, you have some correspondence to back you up.

Yes, it's legal to develop software that only works on specific OS platforms, which is all that's been done here.

You aren't being "forced" to use Windows. The game is experiencing issues because it's being run using 3rd-party software, which can set off alarm bells for Blizzard's security.

direct x is third party software fyi.. Windows is third party software... Your audio video drivers are third party software....

Please don't be deliberately dense.

You know that the game was developed for Windows. You know that Warden is automatically going to exclude expected background applications that interact with the client, like DirectX.

The game isn't designed to be run on a Linux system, so there's no reason to expect it to recognize things like WINE as "safe".
You have 40ish friends who use linux? I think I know around 1-2 people tops.

Please don't be delibterately dense.

You know that the game was developed for Unix. You know that Warden is automatically going to exclude background applications that interact with the client, like OpenG.

The game is designed to run on a unix system and recognizes WINE because it is part of there mac install.

Look everyone I can troll pointlessly too!!!

The blind leading the blind.

It would really not take much to fix up Warden so it would overlook Wine. And there's enough hooks and native API checks in Windows to make sure nobody could exploit it.

I mean, hell, remember a time where martians, TCP teardropping and similar things were an issue? You know how easy of a fix it was?

ITT: Idiots who are not system or network admins unnecessarily use *nix operating systems and play games on them.

Telecomm Engineer & Linux specialist- but yeah, we're all idiots. Don't mind us.

And yet Mac OS is supported, but Linux is not...

It's almost as if these two things were distinct operating systems, with their own code.

All this thread is doing is confirming the worst stereotypes about Linux users.

Issue being is linux users have to use the direct x counter part not the posix/Python open gl client that mac os users get to use... The flag is comeing from the Direct x api layer.

So, again... something unique to Linux (which, for the hundredth time, is not supported) is causing Warden to react.
Typical discussion with Linux users. Started with whining that some program doesn't run under Linux and ends with imbecile discussions about software ideology and what recursive acronyms stand for... you Linux guys are so 1990 *sigh*

You are bashing things you have no idea about, you are computer illiterate, you dont understand what wine is, how operating systems work, how PE's are processed yet you make assumptions on blizzards behalf. You are the person who is pointlessly being dense and descriminating against a group of users who dont mean any harm, you want to use windows fine, dont make others use windows and argue pointlessly about things far beyond your grasp. I may come off as pompous or arrogant but read the rest of this thread, and count my actions vs the actions of ignorant windows users bashing me and my linux brethren and you will see which group is attacking who. Seriously get off my back you have no point against linux move along.

yeah, did you not look at the system requirements and realise linux is not listed? Who knows what exploits could be made through linux, since it is not supported by blizz

The fact that IP traffic is routed from a VM to a real interface through Linux certainly creates an opportunity for mischief... I can easily see why Blizzard doesn't like this.

You chose to take the risk. Playing "legit" does not matter , unsupported OS , BURN!
