lock and load

Hunter
in pvp is it best to spam explosive shot when lock and load procs or is it better to use it once then wait for ticks then use next one etc etc ???
dont spam it, use a filler ie. Explosive - arcane - explosive - glaive (or arcane) - explosive
k ty..

What? Why wouldn't you spam it the damage it applies doesn't reset with a new application it stacks.
doesnt it reset it? so if you reapply it misses a tick?

Did and cata and doesn't in mop!
so it stacks ?it looks like it just replaces the previous explosive shot

As of MoP, it no longer eats charges. Feel free to spam away.

I agreed him because you don't waste LnL if your target is near death.
Here is how explosive shot curently works. On LNL proc, the hunter casts explosive shot back to back. Here is what happens. ES has three ticks of damage per cast, on applied on impact, and 2 over 2 seconds, when an ES cast hits a target with the debuff, the one that would be applied on impact and the 2 that would be applied over 2 secs are made into 3 ticks (which occur every 1 second) and are added to the existing dot. The dot's duration cap is 4 seconds (which was implemented in late Cata), afterward, any additional ticks are added together, divided 4 ways, and their damage is added to each of the 4 existing ticks (this mechanic is known formerly as the ignite mechanic as it was first seen-with/applied-to the mage passive ignite dot, the ignite mechanic was added to explosive shot in MoP).

ES 1, small travel time, 2 sec debuff applied, one tick dealt upon application, gcd incured,
ES 2, (1 sec remaining, travel time, new ES is applied to old es, 3 ticks are added to duration, debuff now at 4 sec duration, gcd incurred).
ES 3 (3 secs remaining, travel time, new ES applied to old one. This adds 1 tick to the duration, making it last 4 seconds, and the remaining 2 ticks are added together, divided up, and added to the existing 4 ticks. GCD incurred)
ES 4 (in the event that you cast ES right before LNL proceed, there will be a 4th ES, in which case, there will be 3 ticks remaining, 1 tick is added to existing dot, 2 ticks are divided up, and added to existing ticks, however, all 4 ticks will deal same damage, so the total extra damage added from ES 3 to the 3 remaining ticks at start of this GCD will be added to the extra damage from the 2 ticks added and then divided again. )

As a result, 0 dps is lost from casting Explosive shot back to back, and it is actually a dps gain to do so back to back, as getting ES on gcd asap enables more casts of ES over the course of the fight, where as weaving arcane or cobra shots in between ES casts can take up 2-4 seconds (depending on cobra shot cast time and how many cobras you use) extra, and over the course of the fight, can cost you several ES CDs (in other words, it would be off CD more and you will lose out on potential ES casts).

Sorry for the lengthy answer, but you did ask why we do it, even though its not really clipping due to how it works.

This is a quote from myself explaining exactly how the ignite mechanic works. Keep in mind, you only wish to delay using LNL procs under the condition that not doing so will cause you to be focus caped, thus wasting your pasivly regenerated focus.
