"Update cannot be applied"

I had to reinstall the game today - the patch wouldn't apply for nebulous reasons, then a game file became corrupted (apparently) and it told me to run the repair tool, which completely crushed the entire game and necessitated an uninstall-reinstall (yeah, nice job repair tool).

Now, I get this new and fun problem whenever the game tries to start downloading the tools to do the patching process:
"The file "C: blah blah blah \ World of Warcraft \ Repair.exe.temp" could not be renamed to "C: blah blah blah \ World of Warcraft \ Repair.exe". If this problem persists, you may be able to solve it by uninstalling and reinstalling the game. If you are unable to correct this problem, please contact Blizzard Technical Support.

Having uninstalled and reinstalled twice now to "solve" it and still receiving the same error, here I am - calling Tech Support resulted in a 50-minute long distance call on hold followed by being disconnected.

The irksome bit in all this is that my game was working completely fine until today's patch started the total self-destruction chain - coupled with the joys of watching the "repair" tool completely break a functioning installation of the game.

This looks to be a permissions error.

Make sure that you are on the administrative account for the computer, and if you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7 try right-clicking on the shortcut and running as administrator instead of double-clicking.

If that does not work, you can also try to take ownership of the entire World of Warcraft folder, which can sometimes fix this.
