Transmute: Living Elements Clarification

We've recently seen a few questions regarding the functionality of Transmute: Living Elements and whether or not its effects are truly random. There's definitely some behind-the-scenes magic to this particular transmute, so we wanted to provide a bit more explanation on how it works.

Typically, when you use Transmute: Living Elements, you will receive 14-16 random Volatile elements (Volatile Air, Volatile Earth, Volatile Water, or Volatile Fire) in exchange for 15 Volatile Life. If you use this transmute while in one of the new Cataclysm zones associated with the Elemental Planes, however, the element into which your Volatile Life will transform will be predetermined. For example, if you use Transmute: Living Elements while in Uldum, you will always receive Volatile Air for your efforts.

Here's a list of the affected zones and their corresponding Volatile elements:

Additionally, alchemists with Transmutation specialization will have a chance to receive bonus Volatile elements when completing this transmute. The bonus will be random, though, regardless of which zone you are in.

in exchange for a single Volatile Life

Question about this: in the tradeskill window, it says that it requires 15 Volatile Life. Do you use 15 and receive 14-16 or do you use 1 and receive 1? Thanks for the clarification on zones and what we will receive :)

I actually just changed that modifier right before your post. Good catch, though!

(Now, if you'll excuse, I have some basic arithmetic to re-learn. :P)
Do transmutation specialists get the bonus regardless, or do we have to be in one of the Cataclysm zones? I did this transmute in Dalaran and got 16 fire - does this mean the transmute gave me 14 or 15 fire and the transmute bonus was 2 or 1 fire?

edit: Yes, I'm transmute spec'ed.
As a leveling alchemist learning from my guild alchemists, thank you for this clarification - *everyone* was confused.

edit - *gasp* - first page firstie for me!
Thanks for the clarification.

But seeing as how Volatile Life seems to be the hardest Volatile to acquire (drop rate from herbs makes me sad), I wish we had some way to transmute into that instead :p
After learning this I'm much more excited about transmuting. Now excuse me while I get my other 3 Alchemists skilled up. :D

My alchemist thanks you for the explanation.

And I thank the web team for making item links work. Yay! It's very convenient to be able to build links like this, and once people catch on to how it works, I think some of the gear guides posted in other topic areas will start making use of it.
I would like clarification of the "bonus" for transmute alchemists. I am Transmute speced and received 14 Volatile Earth in Deepholm. There did not seem to be a bonus and I seemed to even lose 1 volatile on the transfer which would be normal except for my specialization.
Awesome, a reliable way for me to get air considering I'm an engineer without a gathering profession on the side.

My life has just been made much, much easier.

Is this still true? It's either bugged or has been removed apparently since I've done two of these transmutes so far with transmutation spec and only gotten 14-16 each time.

Everyone needs to know this, profit be damned.

edit - Allright, little side note:

Just did this in Uldum a few minutes after this post and i got 16 volatile air... AND 14 earth.

Transmute mastery perhaps? I likey!!! =)

I'm elixir spec, and I received 16 Volatile Air and 14 Volatile Earth last night in Uldum. I was like whoa cool, and then did it today and received 15 Volatile Waters. I don't remember what zone I was in, but I certainly wasn't in Vashjr (did all the quests and don't plan on going back soon).
I just did my first transmute. elixir spec. in uldum.

i received 16 air and 14 earth.

If we go by the 4 replies in this thread it seem more likely to get the extra elements if you're elixir spec than transmute :-)
As an engineer alch with gathering alts all i can say is THANK YOU the new item is cool but rather painful to use for min max issues

This statement is INCORRECT.

I am transmute master and only receive 14-16. Please fix this oversight
Another data point: I've used the transmute 3 times, as transmute spec. First (8th) in SW, got 14 Air. Second (9th) in SW, got 14 Earth and 19 Fire - so one of those was my 'bonus' proc. Just now (10th) in Uldum, got 15 Volatile Air, and 16 Volatile Earth.

As another Engineer/Alchemist, I'm pretty happy with this. Ring to Dalaran, quick flight to Uldum, and guaranteed Air. Of course, this becomes less useful once I get the Truegold transmute...
