Known Patching Issue - Norton & SONAR

Technical Support
i have norton 360 and i disabled everything but it still doesnt work!! :( its says downloading updated tools, freezes then says wow has encountered and internal error.
I have been having issue after issue. the game loads slow to the login now, loads slow to the char select, really slow logging into the server.... I turned off my anti-virus and the game loaded almost normal, then clicked on the mailbox and it locked up... Anyone else having these types of issues? The rest of my internet connections are all normal...
Why is it being blocked in the first place?
If you do not wish to turn Sonar off to patch, you can also just use the repair tool in the WoW folder.

Why is it being blocked in the first place?
Because the file is new, like what Ressie mentioned :)

You don't have to disable anything. Just go to your WoW folder and run Repair.

This is Stupid. Why the hell are we required to disable our security to update the game. Blizzard is trying something dumb.

Because you want to play the game and it is stopping you from doing that just based on the fact that it blocks new files in general?

Bull, Your reasoning is pure fail. Their should never be forced to lower security for a game update. We aren't talking about shotty anti-virus software. Norton has barely earn the respect back from some gamers, and they sure wouldn't risk it by blocking a program update.

The fault lies within the update program and blizzards lazy style when it comes to finding secure methods to update their own software.

No one should ever have to lower security for "Legal" programs. Within very few exceptions, and even those are nearly gone now. (since they dealt with mostly how older software for earlier OS ran, since the improved adaptablity of the New OS)

Ya right, New program. I've played brand new MMO's freshly patched with not a one triggering security. blizzard has failed on this patch.

Oh I'm (NOT) saying I'll quit, but sure the heck I'll not be nice about something blizzard screwed up on.

Edit, sorry I forgot a word.

We update our games by publishing a file that the game or tools (like the Launcher) can either download itself or publish it on some other medium, like an FTP site. Having everyone jump into an FTP link to download the patch because the game locked them out isn't a good way to push an update, and antivirus heuristics will most likely block the new looking executable file that you suspiciously downloaded from the web anyways. If we send it through the launcher or game, it's going to see that download in the same way.

It really doesn't matter if we use our own installers or some well known package like InstallShield since it's looking at that big container package in general. Programming around particular antivirus in itself is also a suspicious activity and might raise red flags against other ones. The wait time if we submit programs to vendor whitelist would prevent us from fixing pressing issues like a group of people that are unable to play for some further amount of time.

The best thing you can do right now is understand the purpose of what your antivirus program is trying to tell you, you verify if it's something legit or fake and you deal with the action. You downloaded something it doesn't know, it might or might or might not be suspicious and it's just going to block it until you tell it otherwise. This is why alerts and logs are in place as well as blocking/unblocking/disabling mechanisms.

I'm going to drop this, since the next set of steps is going to get rather technical and all in all pointless, since the talk/convo/etc. will not change a thing.

Though with that understanding, even though the change in programing is new, and may even require "admin" rights (for some). There is one thing that can't be denied, is how inconstant it really is. I understand the premise of the anti-virus SONAR system, and even still the chances of false positives, based on how the program runs and interacts with the system.

I've got to wonder and know I'll never get a full answer for, just on security basis. Is how major of a code change was there for it to think it was a hack.

At any-rate, this does look bad on blizzard, even if it's bound to happen. This isn't a constant thing with new programs. I do agree to know what the warnings/alerts are for your security system, and to know what the false positives are and rip into the ones who are to blame for it.(personal thing)

[P.S.
This is why I use Steam to launch my Game. I run the updater every so often. makes for a much more pleasant experience for me]
I had this issue before and after trying to download the patch fixes, I disabled my SONAR for 15 minutes and re-ran the download.

NOW when I go to WOW it says Unable to Validate Game Version

Please PLEASE tell me that this very inconvenient patching issue that has happened at least 4 times since cataclysm isn't now going to result in me having to spend the night reloading the entire game? I have so many settings etc... and seems ridiculous.
Thank you for the info, we are downloading now.

I dont have any anti virus programs installed, and my firewall is turned off, but still have this problem :(

Heres Your Sign......
Yet another reason to hate Norton.

especially when there's WAY better (and free) Anti-virus programs out there like Microsoft Security Essentials, and Avast Antivirus.
