Updated the WeakAuras section with a few simple auras. Additional auras will be posted over time. Feel free to post your auras/suggestions.

This is a Retribution Paladin DPS guide focused on providing a thorough understanding of the spec. This guide is a constant WIP and is being edited regularly. Check back often for updates.

This guide is made possible by the collective efforts of the Retribution theorycrafting community, especially Solsacra and mserrano. While generally accepted as correct, much of the information provided here is ultimately theoretical and should be taken as suggestion, not gospel. Any major changes are noted in the change log (section 14, post 11).

Thank you and have a nice day. :)

1 What's new in Legion?
____________________________________________________________________

Universal Changes

• The vast majority of raid buffs have been removed from the game

• Warforged system changed to Titanforged system
Any piece of gear has a chance to roll +5 item levels. If this roll succeeds, it has a chance to roll for another +5 item levels. This process repeats itself until either a roll fails or the global item level cap is reached. This cap is [(highest available base item level) + 15]. As of T19 release, the cap is 895 (Mythic raid item level +15).

• Multistrike has been removed from the game
Any existing Multistrike has been replaced with Haste or Critical strike rating

Retribution Changes

• Mastery reworked: Increases Judgment damage by 24%+ and causes Judgment to increase damage taken from Holy Power spenders by 12%+
• Entirely new set of talents; details in the talents section of the guide

• Some abilities have been pruned, including: Hammer of Wrath, Hammer of the Righteous, Exorcism, Hand of Sacrifice, Righteous Fury, Emancipate, Divine Protection
Seals have been removed from the game
• Word of Glory is no longer baseline; it is now a talented AoE heal

• New abilities: Hand of Hindrance (targeted snare), Blade of Justice (HoPo generator), Shield of Vengeance (Divine Protection's replacement)
• New passive: Retribution - When a party or raid member within 40 yards dies, you gain 20% increased damage and 30% damage reduction for 20 seconds

• Greater Blessings have been redesigned. GBoMight grants the target a chance to deal an additional portion of their damage as Holy. GBoKings grants a periodic absorb shield. GBoW grants 0.2% health and mana every 3 seconds.

You may have 3 Greater Blessings active at a time. In a raid group, all 3 of those blessings should be Might, placed on the 3 highest DPS.

• Divine Shield no longer reduces your damage by 50% while it is active. Similarly, Blessing of Protection no longer prevents its target from attacking.

2 Talents
____________________________________________________________________

IT'S STILL EARLY -- EVERYTHING HERE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
____________________________________________________________________

Tier 1 - Level 15
• Final Verdict - Passive. Increases the damage of Templar's Verdict by 20% and the damage of Divine Storm by 10%.
• Execution Sentence - 3 Holy Power, 20s CD. Deals a large amount of Holy damage after 7 seconds. Both the CD and duration are reduced by Haste.
• Consecration - 12 sec CD. Deals Holy damage to all targets within 10 yards every second for 12 sec. CD and duration reduced by Haste.

Recommended: Final Verdict. Execution Sentence has comparable performance at L100, but lacks practicality while leveling and falls behind in current L110 sims.

Tier 2 - Level 30
• The Fires of Justice - Reduces the CD of Crusader Strike by 1 second and grants it a 15% chance to reduce the cost of the next Holy Power spender by 1.
• Zeal - Replaces Crusader Strike. Chains to up to 3 additional targets, dealing 40% less damage per jump. Longer CD and deals Physical damage instead of Holy.
• Greater Judgment - Causes Judgment to hit 2 additional targets (up to a maximum of 5), and causes it to always critically strike against targets above 50% health.

Recommended: The Fires of Justice for single-target, Zeal for 2+ targets. Greater Judgment becomes viable when there are frequently 4+ targets within range. Note that Libram of Vindication does not function with Zeal, weakening Zeal in T18.

Tier 3 - Level 45
• Fist of Justice - Your damaging Holy Power spenders reduce the remaining cooldown of Hammer of Justice by 8 seconds.
• Repentance - Incapacitates the target for up to 1 minute. The target will take up to 25% of their maximum health in damage over 1 minute.
• Blinding Light - 1.5-minute CD. Deals a moderate amount of Holy damage to all targets within 10 yards and disorients them for 10 seconds.

Recommended: Blinding Light is the only option with the potential to add to your damage, but only if you somehow reach a GCD where you have absolutely nothing else to cast. This will start out as rare and become an impossibility with more gear.

Fist of Justice is the generic winner, but it won't find much use in raids considering the overwhelming quantity of stun immunity.

Tier 4 - Level 60
• Virtue's Blade - Causes Blade of Justice critical strikes to deal 300% normal damage.
• Blade of Wrath - Replaces Blade of Justice. 7.5s CD. Deals a small amount of Holy damage immediately and then an additional, larger amount of Holy damage over 6 sec. CD and DoT duration reduced (tick rate increased) by Haste.
• Divine Hammer - Replaces Blade of Justice. 12s CD. Divine Hammers orbit you, dealing Holy damage to all targets within 8 yards instantly and every 2 sec for 12 sec. CD and duration reduced (tick rate increased) by Haste.

Recommended: Blade of Wrath outperforms Virtue's Blade at L100 for single-target. Divine Hammer is superior when there are frequently 2+ targets in range.

Tier 5 - Level 75
• Justicar's Vengeance - 5 Holy Power. Deals a large amount of Holy damage and restores health equal to the amount of damage done. Deals 100% additional damage and healing when used against stunned targets.
• Eye for an Eye - Reduces Physical damage taken by 35% and counters all melee attacks taken for the duration. Lasts 10 sec, 1-minute CD.
• Word of Glory - 3 Holy Power. 1-minute recharge. Heal yourself and up to 5 other friendly targets for a moderate amount. Maximum 2 charges.

Recommended: Weird tier. Eye for an Eye is the generic winner, but Justicar's Vengeance is required if you're playing with Divine Purpose, and may end up being required for Crusade play as well (this is pending further mathemagics).

When playing with Divine Purpose, you will spend all of your DP procs on Justicar's Vengeance. This vastly improves the performance of DP and provides you with a nice boost in survivability due to the healing component.

Tier 6 - Level 90
• Divine Intervention - Reduces the CD of Divine Shield by 50%. Additionally, any attack that would kill you instead procs Divine Shield and sets your health to 20% of its max. Cannot trigger while Divine Shield is on CD or Forbearance is active.
• Divine Steed - 45s CD. Increases movement speed by 100% for 3 seconds.
• Seal of Light - Spend 1-5 Holy Power. Increase your movement speed by 20% for 20 seconds per Holy Power spent. 1 HoPo = 20s, 3 HoPo = 1m, etc.

Recommended: Divine Steed is the only reliable choice. DI might be useful if you have absolutely no need for the mobility boost, but Seal of Light is a blatant loss of DPS to utilize in a raid/dungeon setting. Might be fine for questing.

Tier 7 - Level 100
• Divine Purpose - Holy Power spenders have a 20% chance to cause the next Holy Power spender to be free. Works with Justicar's Vengeance.
• Crusade - Replaces Avenging Wrath. 20s duration, 2-minute CD. Increase your damage and Haste by 3.5%, plus an additional 3.5% per Holy Power spent over the duration of Crusade. Maximum 15 stacks. (Maximum bonus of 52.5% damage & Haste).
• Holy Wrath - 3-minute CD. Deals Holy damage to up to 4 targets equal to 200% of your missing health. Deals only 50% your missing health against enemy players.

Recommended: Divine Purpose for all...purposes. Crusade finds strength at L110 with a relatively full artifact, but until then DP is the way to go.

Holy Wrath may be fun in dungeons or while questing, but it's effectively useless in a progression environment where you want to NOT be taking damage.

____________________________________________________________________

3 Rotation
____________________________________________________________________

IT'S STILL EARLY -- EVERYTHING HERE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
____________________________________________________________________

Retribution's rotation follows a deceptively simple priority system. Talent choices will have a subtle effect on this priority. Some talents will be included in the basic rotation due to their simplicity.

3.1 Single Target Rotation

1. Keep Judgment on cooldown
- You will NEVER cast a finisher without Judgment up

2. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 5 Holy Power or if Judgment will end before the next GCD

3. Cast Crusader Strike or Zeal if @ 2 charges
⎼ Ignore #3 -IF- you are using The Fires of Justice (see #5)

4. Cast Blade of Justice/Wrath or Divine Hammer @ 3 or less HoPo

5. Cast TFoJ-Crusader Strike if @ 2 charges

6. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 4 HoPo or if Judgment will end before the next GCD -OR-
⎼ To spend a TFoJ proc, regardless of current Holy Power

7. Cast Consecration (if talented)

8. Cast Crusader Strike or Zeal if @ 1 charge

9. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 3 HoPo or if Judgment will end before the next GCD

Some clarification about The Fires of Justice: Take note of #3. When using Zeal or Greater Judgment (CS is unmodified), you will use the respective HoPo generator when you have 2 charges available. Notice that you want to do this ahead of Blade of Justice, Wrath, or Divine Hammer.

Take note of #5. When using The Fires of Justice, the priority of Crusader Strike changes. Instead of casting it ahead of Blade of Justice/Wrath or Divine Hammer, you will cast it after. Basically: ignore #3 when using TFoJ.

This logic reduces the odds of overlapping (wasted) Fires of Justice procs.

3.1.1 Divine Purpose

When talented into Divine Purpose (level 100 talent), you must also use Justicar's Vengeance (level 75 talent). DP/JV priority is as follows:

1. Keep Judgment on cooldown
- You will NEVER cast a finisher without Judgment up

NEW > 2. Cast Justicar's Vengeance w/ DP proc & Judgement up
⎼ @ 5 HoPo or if Judgment or DP will end before the next GCD

3. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 5 Holy Power or if Judgment will end before the next GCD

4. Cast Crusader Strike or Zeal if @ 2 charges
⎼ Ignore #3 -IF- you are using The Fires of Justice (see #5)

5. Cast Blade of Justice/ rath or Divine Hammer @ 3 or less HoPo

6. Cast TFoJ-Crusader Strike if @ 2 charges

NEW > 7. Cast Justicar's Vengeance w/ DP proc & Judgement up
⎼ Takes priority over spending the last charge of CS/Zeal

8. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 4 HoPo or if Judgment will end before the next GCD -OR-
⎼ To spend a TFoJ proc, regardless of current Holy Power

9. Cast Consecration (if talented)

10. Cast Crusader Strike or Zeal if @ 1 charge

11. Cast Templar's Verdict w/ Judgment up
⎼ @ 3 HoPo or if Judgment will end before the next GCD

3.1.2 Execution Sentence

When talented into Execution Sentence, you will want to use it on cooldown as long as you can land it inside of a Judgment window. It is appropriate to spend a Divine Purpose or The Fires of Justice proc on Execution Sentence if the proc happens to coincide with the moment you need to cast ES.
____________________________________________________________________

3.2 Multiple Target

When there are 3 targets in range, replace all instances of Templar's Verdict and Justicar's Vengeance with Divine Storm in the above priority lists.

As mentioned in the talents section, Zeal will outperform TFoJ (Crusader Strike) when there are 2+ targets up. At 4+ targets, Greater Judgment becomes a viable option.

Caveat: Libram of Vindication cause TFoJ to outperform Zeal on up to 3 targets (depending on fight mechanics and add up-time) due to Zeal not activating the trinket.

Also at 2+ targets, Divine Hammer takes a slight lead over VB/BoW, and Consecration gains an edge over Final Verdict. Bear in mind that these talents need to be able to reliably hit at least 2 targets to be a DPS gain.
____________________________________________________________________

3.3 Cooldown Usage

Avenging Wrath (AW) increases all of your outgoing damage and healing by 35% for 20 seconds before Artifact bonuses. When not talented into Crusade, you will generally want to use it automatically on cooldown. Pretty simple.

In relation to our T18 set bonuses: there is no longer a need to wait a full minute between casts of Avenging Wrath, as there is no 1-minute CD to line it up with. Unless you're saving charges for a certain point in time (Gorefiend's Feast of Souls, for example), you should just chain all 3 charges together at the beginning of the fight.

3.3.1 Crusade

When talented into Crusade, you will want to ensure that you have built up at least 5 Holy Power before activating it. This ensures that you can start building stacks immediately. You should also do your best to sync Crusade with a fresh Judgment.

3.3.2 Potion Usage

There is no absolute time to use your combat potion. The only criteria is that it be used alongside your major cooldown (Avenging Wrath or Crusade) and as many procs and effects as possible (i.e. Bloodlust, trinkets). Encounter mechanics may also affect when you should use your potion--high difficulty phases, damage boosts, etc.

On pre-potting:

"Potions have a 1 minute CD outside of combat. Within combat, potions can be used a single time. To maximize potion usage, it is possible to pre-pot. This is the practice of using a potion a few seconds before combat engages. This places you on the 1 minute potion CD, but it immediately begins ticking down as it began outside of combat. Thus 1 minute later, in the middle of the fight, you can again use a potion. This second usage is your combat usage and prevents further usage during the fight." (Exemplar)

4 Greater Blessings
____________________________________________________________________

Our Greater Blessings have been reworked for Legion, and are no longer raid-wide buffs. Instead, they provide individual boosts to up to 3 friendly targets. You may have up to 3 Greater Blessings active at a time.

Greater Blessing of Might

Gives the target's abilities a 10% chance to deal an addition 30% damage as Holy. When playing in a group, you will always want all three of your active blessings to be Might, and you will want to place them on your group's three highest DPS.

Greater Blessing of Kings

Grants the target a small, periodically-refreshing absorb shield. May be useful for helping tanks or players executing certain "soak" mechanics stay alive.

Greater Blessing of Wisdom

Grants the target 0.2% mana and health regeneration every 3 seconds. Potentially useful to healers over the course of a long fight, but negligible otherwise.
____________________________________________________________________

5 Utility
____________________________________________________________________

We have access to a healthy array of defensive and support-oriented abilities outside of our standard rotation. Good Paladins can execute their rotation and deal competitive damage, but great Paladins are able to make use of their entire toolkit.

5.1 Defensive Spells

These are abilities that help you stay alive, because you do zero DPS when you're dead. (Just kidding, you still do damage because of Greater Blessing of Might.)

5.1.1 Divine Shield

Grants total immunity to all damage and spells for 8 seconds. 5-minute cooldown, which can be reduced to a 2.5-minute cooldown with talents. Causes Forbearance for 30 seconds, which can reduced by artifact traits.

Divine Shield can be used to survive mechanics that might otherwise kill you. Worth noting is that, as of Legion, your damage is no longer reduced during DS.

5.1.2 Shield of Vengeance

Grants an absorb shield (value scales with AP), lasting up to 15 seconds. When the barrier is consumed, all damage absorbed is dealt as Holy damage divided between all targets within 8 yards. Damage scales with damage-increasing effects such as Avenging Wrath. If SoV times out without being consumed, no damage is dealt. 2-minute CD, reduced by artifact traits. This is our "short" DR cooldown.

This should be treated like a standard DR CD (use it when unavoidable damage is coming), but if you can also squeeze some damage out of it, all the better.
____________________________________________________________________

5.2 Healing Spells

These are abilities that help you keep others alive (as well as yourself).

5.2.1 Lay on Hands

The most universally-known "oh %@#$!" button in WoW. Heals a friendly target for an amount equal to your maximum health. This is essentially a full heal when used on anyone that isn't an extremely geared tank. 10-minute CD, so expect only one use per fight. Causes Forbearance on the target for 30 seconds.

A well-placed LoH can be the difference between a kill and a wipe when used on a tank or healer on the verge of death. Even when the stakes aren't that high, topping off a low DPS during a stressful phase can give healers some extra breathing room.

5.2.2 Flash of Light

Standard hybrid toolkit healing spell. You can cast 5 or 6 of these before running out of mana. More useful for questing than anything. However, there will inevitably be situations in a dungeon or raid environment where it may be prudent to hard-cast an FoL or two to help keep a player alive. Use your best judgment.
____________________________________________________________________

5.3 Blessings

Our Blessings (formerly 'Hands') are among our most powerful abilities. Intelligent use of these spells, in particular, can set you apart from other Retribution Paladins.

5.3.1 Blessing of Protection

Grants a friendly party or raid member immunity to all physical attacks for 10 seconds. 5-minute cooldown, reduced by artifact traits. Causes Forbearance for 30 seconds. As of Legion, BoP no longer prevents the target from acting for its duration.

This is easily one of the most powerful abilities in our spellbook. In addition to preventing Physical damage, BoP is also capable of clearing or protecting against most Physical debuffs in the game. One example is Kilrogg Deadeye's Heart Seeker DoT. Another is Blackhand's Marked for Death ability; even on Mythic, where the debuff cannot be cleared, it still prevents P3 knockbacks and stops the DoT from ticking for the duration of BoP. Always look for smart opportunities to use this ability.

Disclaimer: BoP removes all threat from the target. BoPing tanks may cause wipes.

5.3.2 Blessing of Freedom

Grants the target immunity to movement-impairing effects for 8 seconds. 25-second cooldown. This ability prevents most movement-impairing effects from being applied to the target, but the effects that it will actively clear appear to be arbitrary.

Can be used to combat some root and slow mechanics to help yourself or a friendly player reach safety during a raid or dungeon encounter.
____________________________________________________________________

5.4 Miscellaneous

We have a few other abilities that don't fit into the above categories, but still have niche uses. These are those abilities:

5.4.1 Hand of Hindrance

This is a hostile-cast ability which reduces an enemy target's movement speed by 70% for 10 seconds. 30-second CD. Useful when an encounter includes adds that need to be slowed; one such example is Kilrogg Deadeye's Salivating Bloodthirsters.

5.4.2 Cleanse Toxins

Clears all Poison and Disease effects from the friendly target. 8-second CD. This is a dispel. It's useful for dispelling nasty debuffs from yourself and your friends!

6 Tier Set Bonuses
____________________________________________________________________

T18 2p - Avenging Wrath now has 3 charges. Note that separate charges cannot "cool down" at the same time. This bonus means you get 2 more Avenging Wraths per fight, regardless of length. Still, this is a positively superb 2-set.
T18 4p - When you cast Avenging Wrath, your damage done increases by 5% every second for 10 sec. Canceling AW early also causes this damage bonus to end.
____________________________________________________________________

7 Gearing
____________________________________________________________________

IT'S STILL EARLY -- EVERYTHING HERE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
____________________________________________________________________

7.1 Stat Priorities

Please note that these values are very generalized and won't always be accurate for your character. If you wish to find out exactly how each stat performs for your character in his/her current gear, you must do so using SimulationCraft.

Generally, our current stat priority is as follows:
Strength >> Haste (30%) > Crit strike > Mastery = Versatility
You can find a link to the sim tool used for everything here (SimulationCraft) in the Resources section of this guide. It's an invaluable tool worth learning to use.
____________________________________________________________________

7.2 Gems

All gear (even trinkets) has a chance to drop with a Prismatic socket, just as it has a chance to drop with extra item levels or tertiary stats.

Prismatic (All) sockets:
Immaculate Haste Taladite or Greater Haste Taladite
- Cheaper/weaker alternative: Haste Taladite

____________________________________________________________________

7.3 Enchants

Item slot - [Optimal enchant]
- [Cheaper, less effective alternative]

Cloak - Enchant Cloak - Gift of Haste
- Enchant Cloak - Breath of Haste

Neck - Enchant Neck - Gift of Haste
- Enchant Neck - Breath of Haste

Ring - Enchant Ring - Gift of Haste
- Enchant Ring - Breath of Haste

Weapon - Enchant Weapon - Mark of the Thunderlord
- Enchant Weapon - Mark of the Shattered Hand

____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

8 Consumables
____________________________________________________________________

Flask - Greater Draenic Strength Flask (250 Strength)

Potion - Draenic Strength Potion grants 1000 Strength for 25 sec. Remember to pre-pot before the pull so you can use a 2nd pot later.

Food - Buttered Sturgeon (125 Haste)

Augment Rune - Stout Augment Rune (50 Strength)
____________________________________________________________________

9 Races
____________________________________________________________________

Racials are largely equal in performance impact, but it's still important to know what each race has available to it in the interest of being informed.

9.1 Alliance

Draenei Racials
- Heroic Presence: Increases your Strength, Agility, and Intellect by 425 @ L110
- Gift of the Naaru: Heals 4% of max health every sec for 5 sec. 3-minute CD. Useful for helping yourself or another player survive through light damage.

Human Racials
- The Human Spirit: Gain 2% more of all secondary stats from all sources.
- Every Man For Himself: Free CC break. 2-minute CD. May be used to earn a few extra seconds of DPS time or to get to a safe spot during an encounter.

Dwarf Racials
- Might of the Mountain: Increases Critical strike bonus damage and healing by 2%
- Stoneform: Clears all magic, curse, poison, disease, and bleed effects and reduces incoming Phyiscal damage by 10% for 8 seconds. 2-minute CD.

9.2 Horde

Blood Elf Racials
- Arcane Torrent: Instantly grants 1 Holy Power and AoE silences for 2 seconds on a 1.5-minute CD. Use on CD unless an AoE interrupt is needed at a specific time.
- Arcane Resistance: Static 1% reduction to Arcane damage taken.
- Arcane Acuity: Passively grants an additional 1% Critical strike chance.

Tauren Racials
- Brawn: Increases Critical strike bonus damage and healing done by 2%
- War Stomp: 2-second stun. 2-minute CD. Very little use in PvE due to its cast time.
- Nature Resistance: Static 1% reduction to Nature damage taken.
- Endurance: Increases Stamina by 1,283 @ L110. Some usefulness for survival.

10 Mechanics
____________________________________________________________________

• At level 110, Versatility converts at a rate of 400 rating to 1% (half scaling for the mitigation portion), Mastery at a rate of 233 rating to 1%, Haste at a rate of 325 rating to 1%, and Critical strike at a rate of 350 rating to 1%.

• Boss level mobs have crit suppression of 3%. This means you will crit less frequently than the % displayed on your character sheet.

• Against creatures up to 3 levels higher (Boss level), all characters have a 100% chance to hit, 0% chance to be dodged, 3% chance to be parried, and 0% chance for glancing blows. You cannot be parried from behind.

• Glancing blows still have a chance to occur when attacking mobs 4+ levels above your own. Glancing blows deal 75% damage and cannot crit.

• All damaging attacks do 200% damage when they Crit, before modifiers. Critical hits only deal 150% damage in PvP, before modifiers.

11 Addons & Macros
____________________________________________________________________

11.1 Addons

WeakAuras 2 - http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/weakauras-2
- Highly configurable visual and audio cues for various in-game events. Can be used to track de/buffs (such as Judgment) and various other crucial elements.

This addon is an absolute must-have, and there are in fact many guilds which require their raiders to use it to track various encounter mechanics, etc.

Hekili - http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/hekili
- Rotation assistance addon which tracks ability cooldowns and makes suggestions about what should be used next based on imported data from the SimCraft APL. Has separate modules for single target, cleave, and AoE.

This addon is superb for helping new players learn the spec, and is used by many intermediate- and top-tier players to help them track their rotation.

Q. Are faster weapons or slower weapons better?
A. Slower weapons of an equal or similar item level should be slightly superior because they have higher top-end weapon damage.

Q. Is it okay to use mail/leather gear?
A. No; these items no longer have attack power as a secondary stat. This lack of AP versus Strength gear (which we do get AP from) makes Strength gear vastly superior. In addition, using all plate gear grants a free +5% Strength via Plate Specialization.

Q. What about higher-DPS Agility weapons?
A. No, an Agility weapon of similar item level should never be as good as a Strength weapon for the same reason that plate > mail and leather gear (lack of AP).

Wow, i'm impressed. It's very neat and organized.

I'll definitely go ahead and give it a read as I will be raiding soon on this toon, yet i'm sort of new to Retribution Paladins.
Been 3mins must be safe to post now.

Can i recommend powerauras? Not only is it good at tracking inq its good at tracking other things like divine protection/trinkets/ect.

Also why not just edit your old guide? Why remake it?

Sure, I'll tack it up there in just a bit; thanks for the suggestion. I used that myself until the in-game auras were launched.

The reason I didn't just edit the old guide is because I no longer have access to the account under which it was written.

Okay just curious.
