Ask The Devs!

General Discussion

What ever happened to Ask The Devs?? Did they just completely scrap it. I was trying to find an old quote for another forum and came across the old Q&A. I really loved that too. It had a good insight into what the devs were thinking and working on at the current time.

Please bring back Ask The Devs!!

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about:

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/3127940 that was the last one they did back in July last year. There are links to all the previous ones in there too.

They switched to the live Q&A, but then stopped doing those too for some reason.
They did say they were going to do more of the live Q&A but with more focused topics.....so much for that :/
The trouble with these things is that answers spawn more questions, and often some upset because Blizzard can't give clear-cut answers to everything. They can't make committing answers regarding suggestions/changes either, as that ends up having repercussions far into the future.

They're also busy maintaining, improving and developing the game that we love. Having Q&A sessions takes a lot of time, and even more time to weigh one's words. Us forumites will take the slightest nugget of information and blow it out of proportions.

If we assumed that having regular Q/A sessions effectively added a month between each patch, would we still want them, versus the pre-packaged information we occasionally get leading up to releases or big patches?

I think Blizzard can reap great value by reading the forums, picking up overall sentiments and the occasional bright idea or suggestion - and I presume this is what they do. However, to try to hold a meaningful conversation when the other party has every opinion in the book is probably not quite as worthwhile.

I'll agree that the Q&A sessions were interesting, though. Not always what I wanted to read, but interesting.

Yeah I can definitely understand that. And I know they're busy fixing up Mists and all, but I personally really enjoy the Q&A's live or not, and even blog posts. I see a very rare blog post every now and then. D:
Engaging with the community was really hard so they stopped doing it.
These turned in to the live Q&A's we hold using CoverItLive. You can see the two we've done so far for World of Warcraft:

Mists of Pandaria - http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/3825589
Class Design & Balance - http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/3914934

We plan to continue using CoverItLive for live dev Q&A's. No plans at current to go back to the old static AskTheDevs version.

Is it a safe assumption that we will see another Ask the Devs soon after the big explosion of information on the upcoming expansion?

It has been awfully quiet lately, after all!
Just wondering will we be seeing any more Q&A's in the future maybe possibly soon? (like a month or few)

oh and Its bashiok, he lives :)
Really looking forward to the next CoverItLive Q&A, I hope it's soon. They're some of my favorite things that I've seen the community and the Devs do.

No plans for AskTheDevs, but how about a Q&A soon? Doing a monthly Q&A would do wonders to help people feel like they are more connected to the game and be a great PR tool in a time when the game needs to fight for all the good PR it can get.
I'm glad the past Ask the Devs is now used via the Cover it live as it is a better and quicker system for questions and answers. But I wish some topics, like lore, would have a open "ask the devs" and "we'll answer some periodically".

Or rather just do some Lore Cover it live ones often.

You have to admit, waiting over two months feels kinda long.
I see dem shiny words.

You're alive!
Is there any chance of doing a Lore live Q&A next? :O
I wrote a novella of a response to this thread before realizing Bashiok stealthed in and sniped this discussion. So I'm going to post my response anyway!

He says I'm too long winded. I say I'm more comprehensive. :p

This is sort of correct. We feel that the CoverItLive platform we used for two developer Q&As post-BlizzCon is a better format. The methods for choosing questions are never perfect -- especially when there are so many -- but CoverItLive allows us to answer more questions much more quickly than we did with "Ask the Devs," not to mention it takes up way less time for our developers.

We haven't stopped doing the CoverItLive developer Q&As. There are a couple of reasons we haven't done this in a while. For one, there are only so many questions we can field regarding future content (in this case Mists of Pandaria) before we have to step back and say, "wait until we have these things more fleshed out so we can put the upcoming features in a contextual preview." Also, we really want to make sure there isn't an expectation that these Q&As will be done at regular intervals. We'll host them when we feel they'll appropriately compliment new information that's gone out.

We are in the initial planning stages of the next Q&A for World of Warcraft, but its timing is still contingent upon a lot of other things. It just doesn't make sense to host another one right now when we haven't really released further previews of the next expansion since BlizzCon.

That said, our goal is to try and cover as much ground with CoverItLive as possible. We want to expose you to different development teams at appropriate times (whether it be class designers, UI designers, the art team, etc.) so you really get a feel for all of the work that goes into everything we do. At the same time we want to make sure we get these kicked off for our other franchises as well.
