Latency issues, my end or yours???

Mac Technical Support
First of all Blizz, I'm reposting this as I went to add the below comments to another persons thread (along a similar line, but deviating into unrelated areas) three days ago and for some unknown reason it posted into an old thread of mine from April! No idea why, so I'm putting into a new thread.

I'm having big issues with lag and my home & world latencies are frequently changing. This has been happening for ~ 2 weeks now. Perfectly fine before that.

At best both lats are around 250ms. Frequently jumping to ~1500 or so. I've updated all add-ons. Disabled them all, deleted them from my interface and data folders altogether, updated my OS, reloaded UI, cleared Cache, WTF and Interface folders and done several line speed tests (speed on any given day 7,000 - 9500mbps). My activity monitor is set to 'All processes' and on the System memory tab wow is top with ~39% CPU (jumping to 58-59% during fights), used GB or RAM is 5.80GB of 16GB. As a point of interest, when I was having latency issues earlier in the year (as in my April post) my idle CPU usage was around 99.5%

System specs below:

iMac 27 inch
Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
Ethernet connection

My computer runs smooth with everything I do and I never have issues outside of wow. I have all applications closed while wowing and get lag, to test the lag I can open youtube and stream something without issues while wow continues to lag.
Traceroute just run. Also in case its relevant, when I lag the game doesnt slow down, it simply pauses. It will freeze for upto 1 min then in the space of ~ 2 secs i'll see that entire time missed fast forward to the present.

Wow you seriously have my same issue. Yay for latency buddies! QQ
I noticed your ISP appears to be Telstra, or at least runs through their backbone, meaning you're an AUS/NZ customer. The latency you are receiving is due to your play location and the rather large trip the data packets have to travel back and forth via your connection route. The listed latencies once you hit the Telstra side is about right for AUS/NZ players playing on an NA realm.

There really isn't much you can do (in fact virtually nothing) to remedy this outside of moving to the U.S. to play (no, I'm not suggesting that, just throwing it out there for the sake of argument).

One thing to note is that the realms that are listed as "Oceanic" are denoted by their time zone settings, not their location. All of the North American realms are located in the continental United States.

Edit: You can attempt to at least make sure your own system isn't contributing to this by flushing your DNS cache. To do so, enter the following line into the Terminal and hit Enter:

dscacheutil -flushcache

You can also try using either 4.2.2.2 or 4.4.4.4 as your DNS server in your Network Preferences, as that may net a slight speed boost vs. Telstra's DNS servers.

Thanks heaps for the info Tiapriestess, going to try flushing the DNS. I'm on Dath'Remar which as you've already said is an Oceanic realm. I had thought the Oceanic servers weren't based in the US, or am I wrong? In saying that should it really make that much of a difference even if they are based in the US as this problem has only been happening for the last 2-3 weeks?

The other confusing factor behind this is why its seeing my CPU usage go so high when it was always no higher than 5%?

Will let you know if DNS flushing makes any difference.

Thanks again :)
I have a serious lag issue as well....I upgraded to Lion (10.7.3), 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo, went from 2GB to 4GB of memory. I am over the minimum requirements, but my frame-rate is 4fps. meanwhile, before MoP, I was getting 20-30 fps. It makes it impossible to play. I have cleared my cache and that doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thank you.
hi all,

i play my WoW in malaysia i started playing 2-3 months back. (i got all the expansion)

my latency was around 200~210 (home and world) to me is normal.

but recently for the past 2 weeks its been fluctuating to 220ms ~~ 340ms. sometimes when i just logged into my toons its 1000ms~15000ms!!! i ahem to relog in again and it will be ok….but after 1-2 hrs of game play it will go to 240ms and sometimes 300-400ms..i will have to relogg in again. i am satisfied with my FPS (25~~60, i have been adjusting my resolution and graphics settings and so on.)

i have 2 internet at home at 10mbps each (VIP10). one of them is sorely for my own use.

there is nothing wrong with the speed. youtube and web surfing, downloading are fine.

i even went to http://www.wowinterface.com/portal.php?&id=731&pageid=248 to try the method they suggested. it maintains at 213ms but after 1hour, it begins to change to 240ms. i guess it does not work.

i am using an iMac 27 inch mid 2011, OSX mountain lion version 10.8.2

2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon HD 5750 1GB GDDR5 SDRAM

one thing to note, i am using wireless connection because my ethernet port of my iMac stopped working since a year ago. but the thing is, first 2 months of WoW via wireless was fine until recently.

if it is because the blizzard server are far away, can the blues recommend a safe service to reduce lag?….or there is something i can do? i have been introduced to

http://www.reducethelag.com/how-is-it-different/

is it safe?

sad sarah.
hi all, with regard to the latency problem i am facing:

PLEASE OFF ALL FIREWALLS WHEN PLAYING WoW.

For Mac:
SYSTEM PREFERENCE> SECURITY AND PRIVACY.

for me at least, it works

i also bought an usb to ethernet converter because my ethernet port is not working on my iMac.

i bought it from apple shop. and it helps too (plug in and use)

my latency have little fluctuation now. now it maintain at 210~209ms most of the time sometime go to 219ms ~ 225ms but drops back to 210ms in a short time. i can accept that.

i also use the http://www.reducethelag.com/how-is-it-different/ for mac option.

i cut and paste the command in the terminal window before i play WoW every time now just to be on the safe side.

i will monitor the latency closely.
been playing with same connection for like 9months ..good lat the whole time..then a week ago constant bad lag and like 1000lat home and world except in the middle of the night...its so bad i cant play..i only pvp..i dont play from this pc..its my laptop...so the issue isnt that..plz help!!!
