The Arena: A Guide To The Not-So-Obvious

just had my first 9 win (9-2) arena. It was with a paladin i had drafted prior to reading this. The deck had a good mana curve, was creature heavy, but had no consecrate and only one Hammer of wrath and one 4/2 weapon, no legendarys and still managed to control everything well and I definitely attribute some of my success to this guide.

So... "thanks for the guide!" this guide helped a lot and for someone new to arena it is a great reference point to get your head straight at the start of a match and read the few sentences you give for going against each class.

Prior to this I had done 6 arena decks, and overall was 18-18, had a bad 0-3 with an early deck, and a previous 6-3, everything else was even.

Anyway tl;dr
Thanks, great guide!

I just wanted to say thank you for this thread. I was going 1-3, 2-3 at best in arena before reviewing this article. Since then I have gone 4-3, 5-3, 6-3, and am currently 5-1 in my current arena matchup.

The tips about useful cards for any class, as well as class defining abilities in arena was really helpful! So just giving a shout out and a thank you! +1

As a side note, I just got invited to the beta last week, so I am a very new player.

This guide is actually good for all levels. It sent me from consistent 5-6 wins to consistent 7+ (well, as much consistent as the last 5 runs can mean).

I just got my first 9 wins (9-1) with a priest without holy nova and with 2 mind blasts and 3 northshire clercis (not sure about the name, the ones that give card draw on heal). the mind blast are a waste and were mostly because of really bad options, but I think the clerics are really underrated. If played right you'll usually gain at least 1 draw from them (and often more), and your opponent will waste a card on them, so it's a net win.

The funny part is that the 9 wins gave a lot less gold than the 2 8 wins runs before it (165, 230, 215 respectively). I don't care about the golden rares!

Hi, thanks for the guide and the videos, watched them both, they are very interesting. I would love to hear more advice about the drawing phase.
In particular you sometimes mentioned how horrible your deck was which I didn't quite get. When I have a horrible deck, it means I end up with 0-1 weapons, 0-1 silences, 0-1 card drawing possibilities, 0 creatures above 5 Mana or a combination of those.

So as a suggestion, maybe you could provide answers to these questions, if you have the time: How exactly are cards picked? What do you do when you are forced to pick a completely awful card? How does the gameplan evolve and what options do you actually have to alter your strategy when you get awkward cards in the beginning/the end.

Best regards

You know what I love, looking at that list, picking shaman, and only getting a single feral spirit and a single lightning bolt in my draft.

Not sure why I even waste my time.

Just a slight modification to your flamestrike tip: a mage with 9 mana can do better than kill a 5 hp minion, it can kill ALL 5 hp minions. That's what you get for taking his candle.

I giggled >.<

I just wanted to drop in to say to Ben that thank you very much! Before reading your guide and watching your videos I had played the Arena three times and every time ended up with a score of 1-3. After I found your guide my games have been 3-3, 4-3, 7-3 and I just finished my last Arena which was an amazing 9-1 (with a Warrior)!

Your guide and especially your videos have been an invaluable resource of information on what to think about when drafting and playing the cards. I'm a fan! :D

EDIT:
Oh and I forgot, I'd like to ask you a question about a difficult draft decision (at least for me). The second card for my deck was a choice between Shieldmasta, Warsong Commander and some trash. The first card I had picked was a Knife Juggler.

I value quality Taunts so I picked Shieldmasta. In the end, my deck had two Shieldmastas and one Warsong Commander. After playing through the Arena, I feel like the deck would have been even better if I'd chosen the Warsong.

What would you pick there and why?

I would have taken the Warsong Commander since you didn't have one yet. Every Warrior deck is a bigger threat with 1 Warsong Commander. I would chose a 2nd Shieldmasta over a 2nd Warsong however, but you do need at least 1 in the deck.
