Quick Match Update – July 16, 2015

Since our previous blog on matchmaking was released, we’ve seen an increase in the amount of feedback stating that veteran and new players are being matched together. This can result in friction within the team as new players struggle to keep up with their more experienced teammates and opponents. While we’re excited to see so many new players entering the Nexus, we also want to reduce the likelihood that players with widely differing levels of experience will be matched in the same game.

To help address this, we’ve created an additional rule for matchmaking in Quick Match that will take each player’s total number of Quick Match games played into account when creating teams. This rule has already been implemented, and we expect that you, your allies, and even your opponents, will now be matched more closely in terms of Quick Match experience.

The new rule will not prevent all instances in which new players can be matched with veterans. As an example, this can still occur when a party’s members have mixed levels of Heroes of the Storm experience. Additionally, this change may result in increased Quick Match queue times as the matchmaker searches for players with a similar number of games played to your own.

While this change for Quick Match does not address all of the Heroes community’s concerns about matchmaking, we are still listening to your feedback, monitoring internal data, and continuing to work on further improvements. For now, we’d like to encourage you to play a few Quick Match games, and then head back here to the forums to let us know how it went.

Thank you very much!

Thanks for this! It's a simple change, but a step in the right direction.

I will take an increased queue duration (within reason) over one-sided matches any day.

This change purely benefits everyone involved.

Nice additional rule! Having played tons of matches doesn't assure that a player is good, but at least that he's a bit more experienced than a new one!

I look forward to try this new MM system tonight.

So if i understand correctly this doesn't apply for HL and rank 1-5 will still be matched with rank 35-40?

Spyrian, any information or thoughts from the developers that can be shared with the community about Hero League matchmaking changes coming down the pipeline?

Quick match!? 90% of the toxicity is in HL. We need this implemented in Hero League? Who is running Blizzard..a bunch of chimps??

One way to combat increased queue times would be to fix auto-select so that we aren't forced to pool with every single hero available.

I'd definitely use auto-select then, which would make it easier for the matchmaker to meet composition requirements. Win/win?

That's it? Pffft.

What about Hero League?

What about those AWFUL team comps like Abathur, Murky, Nova and 2 other unfortunate souls?

What about Tyrande and Tassadar STILL being considered "as support as" healers?

Oh, if this improves QM, and places me with, and against, a more equal caliber of players, then I will be playing a lot more!

Thank you for the update!

I think the argument is that HL is a competitive level of play, in which you need to be experienced to join. You need to purchase 10 heroes and reach the level cap. Therefore the issue of playing "inexperienced" players doesn't exist in hero league.

What does exist in HL a discrepancy between people who have played 100 games and people who have played 1000 games. But I believe the theory behind the MMR system and the concept of matchmaking is that 100 games is enough for them to evaluate your level of play, and any difference in skill between a 100 game player and 1000 game player due to experience can be represented by the MMR you have acheived.

You also have to consider that the system uses average team MMR not individuals MMR and that rank does not equal MMR. So there's usually more factors going into a rank 5 playing against a rank 35 than just "inexperience"

Even though I didn't have a problem with the original MM, I do think this will boost the overall performance and rating of Hots. So thanks for this!

The people here are acting like the other issues are not going to be addressed at any point. I would be willing to bet a majority of players play quick match, so they want to address the largest group of players first. If anyone has played quick match recently, it was an absolutely disaster. This won't be a fix-all, but it should help prevent the massive experience gap between teams.

the skill gap from bottom to top is just as large in HL as QM. there are lots of players who seem to have just bought their 10 heroes and leveled up to 30 within a few days of versus AI with stimpack and XP event. they go into HL completely clueless.

so either this change needs to go to HL as well, or they really need to increase the gate that it takes to get into HL.

This change wouldn't apply to anyone in HL because the threshhold for games played being a valid statistic is less than the games played to reach 30....

HL is just supposed to be matched on rank, which having over 100 games played they should have at least a decent pacing on.

What you're seeing still is MMR known variance... a rank 1 and a rank 30 on the same team.

USUALLY this is balanced out on the other team as well, though not always to the same extremes (say a rank 5 and a rank 25)

This has to do with the player pool available at the time, and other MM rules (ping is a big one) so MM is trying to even the teams overall skill by placing high and low skilled players on both sides.

The MM system can even be FORCED to do this even when the player pool is sufficiently saturated... how so? Simple... parties.

Rank 1 player has rank 30 friend. They party and play HL. Now the MM system has no choice but to force the same split on the other team for balance.

Awesome, thanks!

Can you please address the team composition issue though for QM (e.g. settings where one team gets a healer and/or tank while the other doesn't, or one team has too many healers or tanks)

we need a special rules as "Support vs Support" but this time for "Tank + Support vs No Tank + Support". when you dont get tank and the enemy team get a support+tank you GET REKT so hard 9/10 times :(.
