New Quick Match Team Composition Rule - Feb 24, 2016

We just implemented a rule for team compositions in Quick Match that we previously detailed in last week’s blog on the current state of matchmaking in Heroes of the Storm. As mentioned in the blog, we’d like to limit cases in which Quick Match teams will receive several heroes who fill unique roles, or have limited lane presence.

From now on, it will be very unlikely that you will encounter more than one of the following heroes on the same Quick Match team:
  • Abathur
  • Cho’gall
  • Lt. Morales
  • Murky
  • Nova
  • The Lost Vikings

As with all of the team composition restrictions we’ve implemented so far, parties can still bend this rule. This means that you may still see heroes like Abathur and Cho’gall on the same team if those players entered the queue as a party.

There are two other exceptions that are worth noting, as well:
  • If you are matched against a team that has two of the above heroes in their composition, such as Abathur and Murky, your team may also receive two of the listed heroes.
  • Auto-Select does not yet abide by the new restriction. This means that if you have one of the above heroes and an Auto-Select on your team, the Auto-Select may also become one of the listed heroes. Auto-Select support for today’s new Quick Match restriction will arrive with a future patch.

From a level 11 Vikings and level 9 Abathur player: YES!! THANK YOU!

This will make playing those heroes in Quick Match so much better. Now all I have to worry about is the damn map rotation. Tomb of the Spider Queen is still the bane of my specialist playing existence.

What about fixes to low fps issues? I can't play it on 64-bit anymore, I used to be able to. I play it on 32-bit and while it is better than 64-bit, its not nearly as good as it was before I got the low fps problems.

I really noticed it after the Li-Ming patch.

I like this change, it creates more diversity, people rarely wanna face mirror match ups.

I loved to clone Nova as Abathur :/
But the rework ruined her so it's ok I guess.

Would it be possible to add a similar rule to tanks and supports? I dislike getting paired with 1-2 other supports nearly every time I que up. The team normally ends up with either poor damage or no front line.

If you are matched against a team that has two of the above heroes in their composition, such as Abathur and Murky, your team may also receive two of the listed heroes.

This a problem. That means if a duo decides to run a working combo like Abathur-Murky, your team could end up with Abathur-Nova.

Similarly, 3-1-1 vs 5-stack should always get a healer and warrior regardless of what the 5-stack chose.

In short, a party's non-standard choices should never cause the other team's comp to go haywire.

The rule isn't that great I think, there are a lot of very viable comps gone now that were actually kinda ok. Like morales + Chogall, or abathur with murky.

This should have went in months ago.

But better late than never, thanks Blizzard!

You need to check this in auto select. After this change went live we had a game with selected cho'gall then two auto select characters. One was medic, the other was vikings.

Did someone miss a "!"?

Why are you still trying to make QM work? It is a terrible game mode. Remove it and just give us unranked draft.

Still find it odd that Morales is on the list.

Also Murky/Aba is really solid most of the time.

Exactly my opinion.

Why is this not posted in news on the website or posted on twitter? Either the main account or yours personally? Can we get some consistency in posting news for Hots, it would go a long way for communication.

This is a really though issue that a lot of people think would be solved by just adding in an unranked draft. While I don't think an unranked draft mode is a totally bad idea I also think that all it would do is create more toxicity in the game for people. Someone with first pick wants to play XYZ so everyone else has to play ZYX or they are instantly stupid and the reason you lost the match before its even started. We don't need that mentality here. Also, just go play ranked, its only a number why do you care so much about it, play it enough and eventually you will get to where you need to be with rank and MMR and the games will be enjoyable. You'll be stuck playing the same top tier characters over and over or else you will be the stupid one but you will have your draft.

You have to take QM for what it is, a random mode. You get to pick the character you want and do what you want and you might get put on a team that doesn't quite work with your character, it sucks but it happens. That is where the fun is too though because sometimes a team you are on that seems like it would never have a chance wins and it feels great.

That being said though I agree that it would be nice to have some sort of rule that applies to tanks and supports as well. I don't mind being a support or tank and then being placed on a team with another support or tank but what I seem to run into a lot is a miss matching because of the simplified classifications. Like Tyrande and Tassadar vs Reghar and Kharazim or Tyreal and Rexxar vs Diablo and Muradin. Call them melee or supports all you want but one of these things is not like the other. In a party situation where you are coordinated these combos might work out fine but in a solo QM situations there is usually a pretty clear losing side. It would be nice (and maybe it tries to do this already I don't know) if once 10 people are pulled together if it tries to balance teams based somewhat off of the actuall characters selected not just MMRs since one or even two people can't generally carry a team to victory no matter how high their MMR (and if everyone is supposed to be around the same MMR then no one should have to carry anyways).

Seems very weird to me too, wave-clear notwithstanding.

You can still play your favorite heroes, everything wont change but the toxic players will blame you instead of blaming the MM system, and nah.. Who will care about them?
