Grandmaster League Preview and FAQ

Grandmaster League Preview and FAQ

The Grandmaster League commences two weeks after the start of the second StarCraft II League season and is limited to the top 200 eligible players per region -- it is truly the most prestigious Battle.net league for StarCraft II players and will determine who belongs at the top of the ladder. Qualification for this league takes place during the first two weeks of play following the start of a new season, after which potential Grandmaster League candidates must play one more match in order to receive their promotion. Keep in mind that play isn’t separated by league, so Diamond or Master League players will still have the same chance as before to face off against the Grandmasters.

Players must remain active to avoid being removed from the Grandmaster League.  Grandmaster players who let their bonus pool pile up will automatically be removed from the league, making room for more active combatants.

FAQ

Q. How do I enter the Grandmaster League?
A. To enter the Grandmaster League:

  • There needs to be an open slot within the ladder.
  • You need to be in the top 200 players according to a rolling average of your skill rating.
  • You must be eligible.

Q. What does eligible mean?
A. To be eligible, your unused bonus pool must be less than 90.

Q. Can I be removed from the top 200?
A. Yes. If your unused bonus pool exceeds 180, you will be removed from the Grandmaster League.

Q. Is there a way to see who is in the Grandmaster League?
A. Yes. Click on the in-game ladder icon, and then click "Grandmaster" to see the current season rankings.

Q. How active do I need to be to stay in the Grandmaster League?
A. Your unused bonus pool must remain under 180. This means you can't get more than two weeks behind. This is equivalent to roughly 30 games.

Ummm one question, if 200 people move up, does that mean that 200 diamonds will be promoted?

@xTKDx: probably not, they will just have some random newby fill in a spot at the platinum leagues, maybe the diamonds, but us poor golds and down are just going to have to stew...

@xTKDx: Even if 200 people from every league is moved up, I doubt you might get in. No offense, but top 200 is not a easy feat to achieve in any league.

Great. But will losses really won't appear for lower leagues?
@Dustin: Losses really won't show for lower leagues. They will for Master and Grandmaster though.

@Nethaera: Sorry, but this is so stupid ):! Now I won't know my losses, I will not know my progress in the W/L ratio ):!

@DibujEx: Don't bother. There have been countless posts in disapproval of the idea of not showing losses, so trust me, they know the vast majority of players hate this decision. They're still going through with it, regardless of what we want.

@Nethaera: this is beyond stupid and the people that made this decision really need to get their head examined.

If you're not a top 2% player you can't handle losing? Is that what you're saying? I'm such a feeble minded person that if i were to see my # of losses I would kill myself, or worse, stop playing starcraft?

Come on. Seriously...do you know how retarded it will be to be asked "how good are you at starcraft 2?" and all I can say is "well i'm in diamond with 200 wins in I don't know how many tries"

durrrr.......lame. But what do i know. I'm feeble minded.

@Nethaera:

I think the best way to go about that is to let it show losses for the person only. That would be a middle ground. Let only the player see their own losses.

@DibujEx: You do realize that your W/L ratio is completely irrelevant given the way ladder works, right?

@nVusZah: I think the best way to go about is to show MORE stats. Show your win/loss ratio vs masters, vs diamonds, vs plats etc. Show your win/loss ratio vs protoss, vs zerg, vs terran.

Hey it would be cool to even show your MMR? I mean its there...it apparently works right...why not show it?

@HubriS: If ur not in masters you have major room to improve, therefore win/loss ratio means nothing. Even most masters have lots of room to improve.

Also, there aren't many people below masters with over 55% winrate.... because the system is constantly aiming to make you go 50/50.... so just assume you are around 50% winrate, which is probably the case anyways.

@Emythrel: my question remains. why not give us more information? taking away information, however valuable it may be, is the opposite of what should be happening. We may need to improve, and the more information that we have in front of us the easier that will be. I'd like to see win/loss rates vs all 3 races and i'd like to see my w/l ratio vs the different leagues. I'd also like to see the average rating that i beat (ie the MMR)

@Emythrel: If the system works so well what is the point of removing the loss count. There is no real constructive reason for removing such a basic stat, especially if you plan on discriminating across

the leagues. People always want more stats and numbers for a variety of reasons. I think if you plan on doing a change like this it should be done done all across the board or not done at all....
