Upcoming Changes to Matchmaking

Upcoming Changes to Matchmaking

Update: It became necessary to revert the match making changes discussed below. Please refer to the official forums for details.

We’ve been closely monitoring the quality of our matchmaking since StarCraft II was released to make sure that the ladder offers the most exciting and finely tuned competitive experience possible. It’s been a great success, and because of the small skill gap between competing players, most games are tightly contested. While it’s awesome that most games are very close, this also means that both players need to constantly be at the top of their games, because the slightest mistake usually means defeat. While we think this is a fun way to play, we’re not sure if it’s fun for every match to be this way.

As a one-season experiment, we will be slightly relaxing the matchmaking settings in Season 7 to introduce more variety into the ladder. In practical terms, this means you won't always be evenly matched with your opponent. You'll regularly compete with players at slightly higher or lower skill levels, resulting in what should be a more well-rounded experience. These adjustments to the matchmaking system could also result in some players earning faster league promotions for  stringing together wins against higher-ranked opponents.

As always, we will be monitoring the effects of these changes and tweaking the settings to improve the matchmaking system going forward. We’re excited to hear about your experiences and we’re looking forward to your feedback about these changes once Season 7 begins.

See you on the ladder!

I hate the system, me and a friend get placed in silver league, and were both silver players to begin with, but we constantly get placed against player who are silver in a team, but diamond or master individually, they need to have the matchmaking system take into account for the individual ranking, I've about had it with getting maybe one or 2 good matched games, then just getting stomped against players who are 2 or 3 leagues higher than us.

The whole new system by Blizzard is completely broken. Ever since the new season started, I jumped into the Diamond league and keep getting matched with players FAR above my skill range. I've been about 1 - 15 since the season started and only got that 1 win because I had 3 zerg teammates and even then, we almost lost at one point. Thanks Blizzard, now I get to sit out an entire season just so I don't keep losing.

I am new back to the game after several months of D3 beta, I think the match making system is horrible. I am a solid Silver player which isn't saying much but every other game against high golds and diamonds is stupid ridiculous. 0-7 over the last 2 days. I am know I am rusty but sheesh. I am all for the old system, don't fix something that was working fine.

this is the worst thing they have done to the ladder yet. im gold rank 31... WHY AM I FACING DIAMOND PLAYERS WHEN I CANT EVEN BEAT THE PLATINUMS? shouldnt i just face other gold players around my same rank and as i beat them ill move up in rank and face harder players? the system just went from dumb to retarded.

ugggh this change is ruining random team games, especially 2v2. I used to be able to be fairly confident that my teammate would at least be gold level and know his way around. The amount of "no rush I'm new" players I'm getting paired with this season is ridiculous, and it seems to happen most once I reach the top of the ladder. Please switch it back, at least for team games.

The new rules for matchmaking sucks. Okay, i still achieve the same points and the same position on the ladder, but I always play against player that are "favored". Bottom line i get same points but win fewer games = booooring.

Ok so I really dont know how to approach this without offending anyone but..
I seriously dont see how this is helpful to me at all... I mean, im mid silver playing against Mid to High Golds, it isnt fair I lose more than 50% of the time and dont see how this is helpful at all. If someone could help me understand that would be great. thx.

I'm sorry, Blizzard, I'm really hating this new change. I play some 1v1s, but 2v2 with friends is my main domain. I'm not that great, stuck in bronze, but working my way up. I used to have some really good, balanced, fun games but now it seems like I'm versing only two groups of people: People who are in high gold or silver who stomp me, or Diamond/masters people masquerading as bronze to get pics and achievements, who the game mockingly tells me I'm "favored" against.

Pick one of these problems and fix it, because I'm totally OK with sucking and being in bronze as long as, you know, I get to verse OTHER BRONZE PEOPLE.

Ok, I honestly want one of you people working at blizzard to look at my account.. I have not lost to a gold in the last 15 games, and i have beaten countless plats in the last 20 games. I am not on an 8 - 1 winning streak, and im still in gold! WTF and last game i played someone in silver! even though im constantly beating plats, and not losing to anyone in gold.. THIS NEW THING SUCKS

In the last 2 days I have been playing 3 v 3 random. Now I'm only bronze, but that is what I was last year and what I expect to be. In the past I would expect to win about 50%. Fair enough. I was in the top 10 in both 3's and 4's. In the last 2 days 6 wins and 16 losses. The days prior not much better. The losses are stompings. AS A BONUS...I still get matched with teams that are FAVORED! I guess that one win after 7 losses means I need to beat a favored team. Course the same old BS is still goin on. Players that are gold 1v1 playin bronze 3's actually admitted they are gathering their pretty little pictures. Right now I'm hating Starcraft and by extension the company that made it these changes!!!

Playing 1v1. Loving the challenge. Despite the 50/50 win/loss rate if not a little less in my favour, the occasional wins against higher ranked players are very satisfying. Also helps me learn real time what can be expected of a higher level. I'm not matched against platinum or diamond so it's not too uneven either. For 1v1..I think it's great so far!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I have to say that. After 6 seasons in silver, I'm playing golds and plats and beating them. Yes, my play has improved, but as I suspected, I was just getting stuck playing a lot of really tough silver players. This system is totally where it needs to be. If I lose to better players, then I deserve it. If I beat them then I deserve it. I'm glad I'm finally getting the shot.

The new system is ridiculous. I used to play a lot of 4v4 but as a few others said, once you get towards the top of your ladder, you start getting set with arranged teams almost every single game. After losing game after game (not even close), I thought I'd try out some 2v2 again because at least that way I can have a chance. Well, since the new system has come out, I've been demoted a league due to lose after lose. While I'm definitely not the best, my skills are usually not the problem but rather that I got a teammate that's in platinum and we're going up against diamond level players. I've now made it a habit to check my teammates rank and 9/10 they are below my rank. Sometimes we pull through, but that's usually because we're playing a really low ranked team and it results in very little points for me and thus a pointless game. I love starcraft and I've been playing since broodwar was first released, yet I find myself getting closer and closer to uninstalling this game due to lack of focus on team matching (because that is all I play). Check my match history, absolutely ridiculous.

Although I understand WHY blizz is doing this, i don't agree with it very much. I feel that matchmaking is too "relaxed". I play 2v2 with a friend of mine and we are both decent StarCraft players, nowhere near newbies, yet we cant seem to do better if we are always being matched up with players who are way higher ranked than us. We are placed in the lower parts of bronze right now, and keep playing top bronze to mid silver. I just feel this is a bit unfair and would like to be placed against people around or slightly above our skill level. Not ridiculously above our skill set.

Note to Blizzard-Activision:

I'm top masters team player and I quit playing "random team" games last season due to the ques lasting forever and constantly getting versus fully "arranged team" top masters. I started only playing "arranged team".

However, this season, apparently, ironically to my failing, the problem has been reversed. Now the "arranged team" games are longer ques and more difficult while the "random team" games seem to be significantly easier (I know one player who's almost 70-1 masters in "random team" 4v4s--which has always been unheard and he's not a very good player).

I believe the biggest problem with the MMR system is the mix between "random team" (RT) and "arranged team" (AT).

If AT was always versus AT and RT was always versus RT, that would be optimal.

But perhaps, due to the various servers where you can only play on one server per game purchase (which is what I hate most about going from Starcraft/Brood War to Starcraft 2), this may never happen on a practical level. I'd say it's worth trying though while doing this 'relaxed' MMR system. That way, the ques won't be too long and fully arranged teams will always compete with other fully arranged teams.

This is just my humble two cents. I honestly don't care how many issues Starcraft 2 accumulates, because I plan on quitting once Diablo 3 is released; I miss too much not being able to play with my friends in other parts of the world like in Starcraft/Brood War. But for those who continue to play Starcraft 2, I hope solutions are found for all the obvious problems that seem to be a product of company greed and apathy.

Theres a difference between watching my replays and getting stomped by 1 guy who micro like a freaking god when we should outpower him.

Between platinum and gold theres is a HUUUUUUUGE step that isnt covered by learning a few build and watching your replays. theres micro and being able to rebuild your army while you harass and micro combat that we simply cant do, also knowing what build your oponement is doing and how to react vs different situation. the step between bonze-silver aint much, neither between silver-gold. but to get from gold to platine and even worst facing off diamond oponent, its simply stupid

Its still doing even teams and slightly favored like before. I really dont see a difference in skill level on people. Consistantly getting paired with top 8 gold on me or top 8 silver, same as before. Make it interesting and make it harder than that every now and again like a 25 plat or 8 plat person. Thanks.

I hated it at first. I lost my placement match by a HUGE margin (i had gateway and robo units and he stormed me with mass ultras!!) then lost like 4 or 5 games in a row. Now that i realize that the match making is different and i'm getting paired with lots of different people i like it alot. I think it will give us bronze players some great replays to look over and everyone else will just get free points when they play us. haha

I hate this new change, and I repeat I HATE THIS CHANGE!!! They match us up with the most hardest players and most unreasonable teams. I've only played sc2 for about 3 weeks and I'm not that good but I get matched up with gold when I'm bronze!! and this didn't only happen once..I'm extremely frustrated....blizzard should make the matchmaking more fair
