I really have NO clue what where gunna do in heart of the swarm. because if we play as zerg then who do we fight? protoss are good guys (besides the taldarim) and the domionions falling apart. or mabye the "dark voice" shows up and takes control of a big portion of the zerg but kerrigan remains in command of a few others, that WOULD make since because it would means she wouldn't already have all of her units so we would progress just like in the liberty champain. so thats what im putting my money on happenign in the expansion. But i guess well say when it finaly comes out

@Yoldriana: that is different then being corrupted like Kerrigan. Kerrigan isnt just working for the zerg because an infestor has a ridiculously long lasting spell. ;)

Pink: According to Lore, Protoss cannot be infested and assimilated, as they are protected by the Khala. And even the developer Dustin Browder said that none exist. This evidence suggests that protoss could never have been assimilated into the Zerg, and they never will.

What I want to know, though, is why the hell we went through all that crap assaulting Char only to have Kerrigan become Zerg again? Surely, something is amiss with the way Blizzard is setting up Heart of the Swarm for us. Or am I misinterpreting all of it?

Axiom: According to Lore, the Xel'Naga were a peaceful race and at most imprisoned their enemies. http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Xel%27naga
Thus, a war between them and the ancestors of the Terrans is highly unlikely.

1 last thing... blizzard, i'm not trying to crap where i eat. I thoroughly enjoy the game and thought other parts were cool, the campaign was more interactive which was super cool. I'm only being critical because that is the only way things improve. We can stroke our chins and say that everything is great, which much of it is very well done, or we can analyze the aspects that could have been better. That is all i'm trying to do.

Here is what I don't get. In SC1, if anyone followed the story (including from the manual), there was all this talk about the epic struggle bet zerg and protoss, and how they came to realize terran would be the race to tip the scales in one of their favor, due to the terran starting to become a psionic race.

In SC2, that seems to have gone out the window. Its suddenly this 'all to common from blizzard' enemies must put aside their differences to fight a bigger enemy. Is this trying to prepare us mentally for the New World Order? There is little to no twist to it.

Instead you could just have the larger evil unit coming down to bare on all 3 races, but the zerg still hate everyone. Bring Earth back into it. I'm sure they are not done right?

Have a different sector come into play, where you have intergalactic battles instead of interplanetary. Give the Earthlings different terran ships and such. You are telling me that the Earthlings and Terran from Koprulu invented the exact same technology and exact same designs at the exact same time?

Instead give them similar mindset, SIMILAR (not exact) tech, give them different design, and have them come in. You can't tell me Earth has just been sitting on earth, right? how many planets have they colonized in their sector?

Since the Xel Naga made the Protoss and Zerg, were the terrans made? or did we just come to be?

Maybe there was an ancient war between the Xel' Naga and Terran ancestors long ago, and its an ongoing battle between Xel Naga and our ancestors (go along the lines of the fabled ancinet civilizations that were destroyed, like Atlantis type of thing).

My point is there are so many other lines you could have taken, than the WC3 in space variety

I like the story so far, but I have a "macro" story question to ask. Bear with me here as I set up my question with this prelude:
The "Diablo" storyline is basically heroic figures fighting against the Devil and an unholy invasion of the mortal world. Okay.
The "Warcraft" storyline began as the classic Tolkienesque "Human vs Orc" war of swords and sorcery, but it turns out that these Orcs are in fact somewhat demon-possessed, and that there is a big, bad demonic guy from beyond the world are invading the Azeroth because this guy devours worlds for a living. Okay... that works, I guess.
Starcraft started out as a Sci-Fi struggle between futuristic humans and two classic alien archetypes: the highly-advanced, philosophical aliens and the savage, insectoid aliens. Wait, but it gets better. It turns out that the savage, insectoid aliens were tainted long ago, bent into an all-consuming mania by this powerful being known only as "The Fallen One." That couldn't be construed as an indirect reference to the devil or anything.
So, at the bottom of every story, did the struggle all begin with this powerful demonic or pseudo-demonic being who woke up and said, "I need to destroy everything within six millenia, let's get crackin'!" ?

@CptSchultz: I noticed that too lol. I think its dumb. Just keep the zerg as an evil race. The evil beings dont have to become good to introduce a more powerful evil being. They can still be evil. That, in my opinion is a lack of creativity story wise by blizzard.

@CptSchultz: I think Blizzard is giving more dimensions to the Zerg race. If you have a race completely bent on destroying everything there isn't a lot of depth in a story line.

The struggle between 'good' and 'evil' ecompasses the vast majority of games. Blizzard has used that concept in the Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft storylines but has also created a vast universe for each filled with unique characters, lore and conflicts.

In the end, perhaps they are similar but I still buy the games, read the books and love every second of it.

Story was great. Kerrigan is maybe our next evolution, regardless of being Raynor's <3. Whatever, I personally thought it was pretty awesome, set up to a good expansion. Though I want to know more on what the other Protoss are doing right now (Aiur). As far as the Zerg becoming household pets, I think the point is survival. After whatever, Zerg go back to just being crazy, always evolving race (always going to be a problem). You had control over them shortly with the Psi-Emitter in the expansion to the orginal. I can't really see Zerg ever being good but i would like to see maybe the overmind or something come back to life and Kerrigan stay human. The story was good, it worked and i liked it.
Grats Blizz, now HURRY up with my expansion I need closure or another set up to another expansion. Lol.

Actaully that is a great thought for going further, Protoss obvisiously more evolved being then say humans or zerg. Thus why you saw infested terrans in the first and never protoss. It took thousands of years for that evolution to take place? Kerrigan was the just the right Ghost at the right time that maybe took the different evolution path that the overmind was looking for? I dunno, heh alot of possibilites, fun to wonder about IMO. @Pink:

I like how the story went down. it is a great set up for Heart of the Swarm. Unlike others, I certainly won't mind if Kerrigan and the zerg all turn good. The apparently-not-dead Tassadar said that the zerg were not meant to be evil, and that they were turned evil by an outside force somewhere down the line of history. The overmind's plan must have to do with overwriting their directive and turning the zerg back into what they were meant to be through Kerrigan. It is a cool development. I just hope Heart of the Swarm has less filler in the campaign than Wings of Liberty did :/

The main part about the storyline that disappointed me was that you were terran the whole time except for the zeratul back story and also i thought that changing Kerrigan back wasnt very smart because she was a main character in all of the games and they left the zerg without a new leader.

The first chapter was a great one to set up Heart of the Swarm. Incorporating several heroes to command along with a tech tree with internal struggles, a recipe to continue the epic saga in the next chapter. It can get confusing at times because there are so many plots unfolding at the same time but it is still fun!

I throughly enjoyed the campaign. It was playable and a lot of fun.

The only aspect I found disappointing was that the Queen of Blades was changed from a horrible mass murderer back into Kerrigan. I sincerely hope that the Zerg stay evil.

As I played through the game I couldn't help but think to myself, "Uh oh the Zerg are going to become more passionate and human." It seems that with the coming of the Xel' Naga the three races will have to ally in order to save their collective asses.

I'm all for whatever Blizzard throws at us, but I would be bummed if the Zerg went from a serious threat into a humanized and placid species.

I quite enjoy the Protoss backstory, and their interaction with Terrans (the Dark Templar books went into this, which was pretty sweet).

I didn't think the Raynor/Kerrigan story was enough to sustain a whole campaign, which it seems WoL gravitated towards.

duran and doctor narud are the only plot threads that left me pulling my hair at the end of WoL's campaign, otherwise it was pretty neatly wrapped up. A bit more of a conclusion after the walk into the sunset would have been nice, but I understand if you want to start of HotS as dramatically as possible.
The overall story i felt to be inferior in tone and scope to SC and SCBW's story, it was just less epic, more... small and more juvenile. I saw the CE's bit on the making of story - and I have to disagree about sc2 being at its heart a love story about raynor and kerrigan. Major characters they are to be sure, but SC is about freakin intergalactic conflict between 3 of the most different races in the universe! All the side missions felt tacky - whereas ALL the missions in sc and scbw felt like it was progressing the story of a huge space opera. the only missions where I felt like i was making an impact on the SC universe was the rebellion missions and the char missions, everything else seemed ... ignorable. A footnote in the grand history of the SC universe whereas the missions in sc and scbw are devoted their own CHAPTERS.
As for most intriguing, of course the dark voice is an awesome character - a bit of a 360 from the pure, simple evil that was zerg and the overmind and kerrigan - but I like it because it makes the conflict even GRANDER. I would like to know what happened to the dominion after I exposed mengsk, and of course after the letdown of SC Ghost i would love to know more about nova and her place in sc2.

Good work on the story, I hope I wont have to wait till I graduate to learn the outcome of SC2!

I have this strange feeling that the zerg is going to become something like the undead became in WC3; lots of different factions with Kerrigan being the leader that tries to pull them back together, or make her faction the strongest in the case of Sylvanas/Lich King. If Heart of the Swarm is going to follow the usual progression of unit acquisition (starting out with the basic units and slowly building on that diversity throughout the expansion until you have all the highest tier units) then I see that as being the most plausible direction Blizzard will take the story. *shrug* Who knows?

I'm sorry to say that the ending of the Wings of Liberty story left me a bit cold and disappointed. At first I was really encouraged by the interesting turn the story took with the Zeratul missions. The idea that Kerrigan had to survive in order for the known universe to survive was a stroke of brilliance and set things up nicely for the Heart of the Swarm campaign. Alas, converting Kerrigan back to her human form at the end of Wings of Liberty was a disappointment. First of all the use of the Zel Naga artifact as a 'Deus Ex Machina' was unoriginal and rather weak storytelling. Secondly, with the conversion of Kerrigan the writers effectively killed off the Queen of Blades; one of the most interesting and enigmatic science fiction characters ever. To me this was a major storytelling blunder. In all fairness though as a friend reminded me, the Starcraft Two story is far from over, so I guess we'll have to wait patiently for next year's Heart of the Swarm campaign to see where the story goes. On a related note, although I thought Tricia Helfer did a good job as Kerrigan, I found myself missing the occasional levity and wisecracks from Glynnis Talken in the original games. It seems to me the production team in general and the writers in particular are maybe starting to take the Starcraft story a bit too seriously, as often happens when large sums of money are involved. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the game, but was it worth the ten year wait? Well, I would say that it was and it wasn't.

I loved the Liberty campaign and the new level of storytelling it brought to SC... a shoe in for game of the year! That said, I'll be mulling over a few questions for the next year or however long it takes HoS to hit stores..

-The Overmind wanted to merge with the protoss in the first place but wasn't able to because of the Khala... why then would it create Kerrigan to resist the Xel'Naga? Perhaps the Overmind hated itself for enslaving it's own race?

-Where is Duran? If the Duran/Narud theory is correct.... it seems likely that the Xel'Naga made Duran help Raynor to acquire the artifacts, so that Kerrigan would revert to human form, thus weakening the swarm... which leads to..

-Mengsk (and Tychus) knew all along that the artifact would turn Kerrigan human.. is the Dominion in league with the Xel'Naga? This would explain the secret hybrids.. and further support the Duran/Narud theory..

-Tassadar pulls an Obi Wan Kenobi?

-Kerrigan's role in the next campaign?

So many questions!

I'm interested to see what happens to Sarah Kerrigan. I loved the campaign so far, especially the surprise ending. More than anything I want to know if she still has any of her powers, will she still lead the zerg, or is she back to being an ordinary (psychic) human again??

I guess in my own mind Kerrigan is who I associate with Starcraft much more than any other character, and she's been built into one of the most intriguing video game characters of all time. Will be interesting to see how her story unfolds.
