StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 1

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 1

The answers are in!

Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, has taken the time to answer of some of the most burning questions the community has been asking since the early days of Wings of Liberty.

We’ve been collecting your questions for some time, and we’ll be revealing the answers a few at a time. It’s an inside look into the thoughts and motivations of such personalities as Tychus Findlay, Sarah Kerrigan, Arcturus Mengsk, the Overmind, and more, exploring why events went down in Wings of Liberty the way they did, and delving into the machinations that set the stage for Heart of the Swarm.

Before we get to the secrets of the Koprulu Sector, a message from Brian:

Hey all,

I'm going to attempt to answer as many of these questions as I can within my time constraints. (Trying to get Heart of the Swarm done!)

We’ve received many great questions. I'd like to point out that in some cases I am responding with insider knowledge, such as how Broodmothers work. In the case of questions about the plot or character motivations in Wings of Liberty, my answers are based entirely on clues, subtext, and events in the game, so these answers can be deduced directly from the source. In a few cases, the clues are there, but we were probably too obscure in the way we layered them in.

There are a number of questions about the lore justification for the inclusion/exclusion of various units. Rather than take them one at a time, I'd like to give a blanket answer.

Certain types of units fall in and out of favor with military leaders, while and the supply of various components makes some units more or less available. A unit might be discontinued in the field while it undergoes additional R&D, or it might be retired for the foreseeable future. Sometimes an enemy discovers a great countermeasure to a unit, and so commanders will discontinue its use until they figure out a solution.

In the case of multiplayer, I would suggest thinking about it in these terms: Fighting in various locations, military commanders rarely have all the resources and assets that they would like. They must use the equipment they have. This is the case on a multiplayer map. A Protoss, Zerg, or Terran force has certain units it can build, but it doesn't have the ability to produce every unit its race has ever made. The selection in multiplayer is that race's pre-made task group. So when the Terrans (for example) send a force to a planet, that army has a standard load-out of equipment and units.

Question: How did the Terrans enjoy such rapid population growth and colonization of the Koprulu sector when all they had to work with were four broken-down ships? According to the lore, four ships containing 40,000 humans crash-landed and established three colonies in 2259.The events of StarCraft 1 occur in ~2500.Yet it seems like the Confederacy/Dominion are full empires with many worlds and billions of residents. For instance, Tarsonis had at least two billion. No matter how I figure survival and reproduction rates, I just can't see how it makes sense.

Answer: This is an excellent question, and one that has been discussed internally for several years. I've always said that these were four crashed colony ships. So while much of their technology was lost, there were certainly means to ensure a foothold on a new, hostile planet – frozen embryos, frozen fertilized eggs, certainly extensive cloning. There were also methods of boosting food production to support explosive population growth. Mmm, tasty nutrient paste! One tablespoon does you for the whole day!

Because this tech was harnessed by survivors who only had a fraction of their intended equipment, it was lost 50 or so years after planetfall. But that was enough to swell the starting figures quite a bit. Let's suppose those starting figures get us up to 400,000 within 30 years of crashing. (Ambitious, I know, but a civilization that can build massive interstellar ships could certainly create such tech.) We should assume that for the first five or six generations, there was enormous social pressure (if not legal) on all fertile adults to spawn as many offspring as possible. Families of ten or more children. By the third or so generation, infant mortality rates might have risen a bit as the old tech broke down, but they would have dropped again as the colonists rebuilt their technological infrastructure. Now the numbers start to make sense.

Question: In StarCraft, the Queen of Blades told Mengsk that she isn't interested in revenge. Why is killing him suddenly her life's purpose, according to the most recent trailer?

Answer: The Queen of Blades and Sarah Kerrigan are not quite the same person. The Queen of Blades is essentially Sarah Kerrigan under the influence of some devastating forces: incredible power, a dominating level of psi energy, and the presence of Zerg mutagen from the cellular level up.

To be clear, the Queen of Blades is not a separate entity that possessed Kerrigan. Kerrigan is (certainly in her mind) responsible for the terrible things she's done. She has immense guilt for those actions, but she was not completely in her "right mind" in Brood War.

All of that is a roundabout way of saying the Queen of Blades felt no need to kill Mengsk. She did not see him as a threat. Sarah Kerrigan, on the other hand, knows that Mengsk wants her dead, and she very much holds a grudge for his abandoning her on Tarsonis.

the whole thing with the units i can understand with the terrans and the protoss, because ya some units i guess would go out of use.... but the zerg function with evolution and differant breeds, why is it that the hydralisk suddenly lost the abbility to mutate into a lurker. or the defilers are gone. or the mutations for the two types of flyers (whose names escape my mind) lol come on why the crap did we lose the creep colonies!!!!!

@foxta: The zerg are an EVOLUTION race that are known for their success in adaptation within just about any imaginable environment. I am not a writer for Blizzard or claim to have the 100% answer but if you look at Zerg as a race of adaption with their main role being survival then you can see how a few things might make sense for them to get rid of. Lurkers were awesome but they seem to be more than capable of killing entire armies without the evolution from hydralisk to lurker, this is energy and time that need not be wasted if they can be successful without it! Defilers once again fall into the same category as lurkers, they served their purpose but perhaps the need for them expired as they have had no trouble defending their colonies of late. the guardian is an obsolete version of the broodlord (which is far more lethal) and the devourer was a dumbed-down version of the corruptor that evolved from the mutalisk (takes time and energy). All the changes made can be justified by looking at what NEW evolutions have taken place. Don't focus so much on Zerg not being super advanced and instead focus on the mentality of zerg and what that race is trying to achieve. They want to survive, and that's really all they are trying to do.

@foxta: And i didn't mention creep colonies, but the same principles apply, A spine crawler takes less time and energy to create then a creep colony AND a sunken/spore. Its all about saving energy and time and using it in more productive ways.

I would have to say Mr. Kindegran. That the point about Raynor doing a heel-face turn oh his position about Kerrigan came as a total shock to me.

Not only because he swore to kill her one day after she murdered his best friend, but because he had actually given in to his emotions in the past and decided to trust her. And whenever he died try to help her in the past, she attacked and betrayed him. And by the end of this character growth that happens throughout the original Starcraft games, you can see he has clearly decided to do the 'right' thing, even though it means sacrificing his old flame in the process. But Starcraft 2 ignores or even reverses this growth of his character, I would have to say this fact along with the fact that most characters in the universe are now lawful good instead of neutral/evil are the biggest disappointments I had with Starcraft 2's storytelling.

@xajdragonx: Raynor's attitude in StarCraft II was never surprising to me one thing that did suprise me was Fans Attitudes. Hate, Love, Vows of Revenge are pointless. For Four Years People Died and Jim Raynor Was watching them Die and Feeling like Crap as a leader watching every one die and he is Given Vision of the Future. Not a maybe A True vision From the Only Guy in creation that Hates Kerrigan more than Jim and the Only Guy Jim Trusts to tell the Truth in Creation.
Very Simple Facts Kerrigan Dies All Human Life Dies.. Not Just His People or Just Jim. But Every one Every wear... Its Jim Choice He can KILL Every one or Break his Vow or Decide that the Lives of every Man Woman And Child in creation are more important that well Any Vow or Anything. Not Realy a Hard Millitary Choice. A hard personal one but realy no choice at all.

@xajdragonx: I think anyone can change in a reverse direction from where it seems they were going. I think Raynor might have reflected on what actually happened to Kerrigan. Even with the Overmind not in control of her, she was infested, so you can't honestly blame her for who she was. When it was observed that perhaps the Xel'Naga device could undo the zerg plague, perhaps that gave him some sort of hope for a better person to return.

@Lykos: I think that was exactly it, in fact, at the beginning of the campaign in Wings of Liberty, Raynor looks pretty messed up and just sinking his sorrow in alcohol about Kerrigan and her fate. He seems to accept it. "Sarah... sometimes, I think it would've been better if you just... died that day". He was not looking for her or a way of bringing her back, his Revolution was agains Mengsk. It was Mengsk actually the one that set Findlay "free", it was him that was looking for her, for a way to kill her, and the Xel'Naga artifact happened to become involved somehow (I think it was Valerian Mengsk's doing, though I am not sure if he was in league with his father or not). In other words, it is very clear that Raynor had given up all hope on Kerrigan. And now, with her "sanity" taken off again, with the Zerg becoming a permanent part of her, he is back to square one, back at JoeyRay's, trying to drown his guilt and suffering in alcohol as he tries to lead a Revolution agains a murderer and traitor that now rules over a whole Empire. Also, the part about Zeratul's vision is essential, because he now knows that there is no more Kerrigan, no way of stopping the Queen of Blades and saving his friend and love, so, as a true warrior and "Marshal of these parts", he must do what must be done.

@xajdragonx: Ok as for people's disposition changing from neutral/evil to lawful/good. I see what you are saying, but it actually kind of makes sence if you think about it. if you knew that there was a race of beings out there that could rip you in two where you stand if you dont have any protection. It might change your presceptive and outlook on life a little bit. don't you think?

The "In StarCraft, the Queen of Blades told Mengsk that she isn't interested in revenge. Why is killing him suddenly her life's purpose, according to the most recent trailer?" question was completely pointless. If you played SCBW at all, you would know that Kerrigan said that she lied about revenge not mattering to her. It's right in the script for the Korhal mission.

Mr. Brian Kindregan, lead writer of SC2

Really? that is all of the Q&A?? There are so many more questions to be answers. I admit that part 1 and part 2 are okay, and somewhat satisfying, but no where close to a comprehensive coherent story line...
Keep up the good work, but you have a lot left to answer.... I expect Blizzard to demand coherent quality, so you have your work cut out for you. This is coming from a 10 year SC1, SC:BW &,SC2, WC1/WC3/WC:FT, vet...

I loved the gameplay of SC2's campaign, but I have to say the story fell flat and even cliched. Every twist was fully expected, OR the characters that were interesting were completely underdeveloped.

Starcraft+BW had a fully realized story that was actually pretty compelling. I can't say the same for WoL... I know it's probably much too late now to complain but I had to voice my opinion.

@Jovack: I would also like to add how the "new" zerg feel wimpy. Why can't zerg still be the galaxy consuming force. Now we have the overmind being some pawn to a cliched villain. (I really, really cringed when I heard "I love it when a plan comes together"). The story would be a lot more interesting if there were no good or bad characters outright. Everyone has an agenda, everyone is in conflict, and stuff happens. Not, hero underdog Jim Raynor must rally the forces of everyone to fight the scary black essence then everyone hugs at the end.

@Jovack: Yeah, which pretty well mirrors the plot of WC3 - which was cool for what it was and it's own universe, but I definitely don't want to see that kind of thing again. I really like how the SC universe is full of different characters/groups and their own motivations, as opposed to a black and white good and evil. This dark voice thing could be done right, but frankly I don't care much for it. Only time will tell

Lore Facts I want to know:
- Origin of Corruptors
- Process in which SC1/BW Queens -> SC2 Queens
- Process in which Larva are Made
- How Pylons are required for Protoss 'supply'
- Behavior of Archons
- What happened to the Dark Archons?
- How did the Overmind manage to move to Aiur from Char?
- Medivac's Ability to Heal Units (How exactly is this accomplished?)
- Fate of Ulrezaj & Zamara
- Mutalisk's Ability to operate in Space (Seen in the 'Dangerous Game' Cinematic & 'After Echoes of the Future')

Good explanations for these would be very helpful. I've always wondered what species Corruptors were derived from...

eugh i hate that they're making lore around the multiplayer. it's okay to have them separate, there doesn't have to be an explanation for why battlecruisers look like they can only fit six marines! the reason for that is the same reason for only having the particlar units chosen for multiplayer: for gameplay!

also if kerrigan's as noble a character as she's ever been made out to be, she would put the salvation of the sector above some petty revenge on someone he's already humiliated several times. and i'm honestly disappointed that they had to resort to making the character you play as 'good' just to make sense of playing that character. the overmind was 'bad' and what you were doing felt right thanks to the atmosphere and storytelling. don't get me wrong, you know what you're doing is wrong, but the game's writing revolved around making the player feel like the 'evil-doer' the player was meant to be.

i know that the revenge plot is probably a distraction from the main story arch before we get the game, but there would be practically no progression if this is the path they're going to take. wish they would get james phinney to get back and chris metzen to have a little more confidence in himself.

DON'T get me started on the prophecy mess.

@xDRxBALO: That one I can even awnser. The infester them inside itself. The eggs are more of a cocoon. As for them killing themselves, without a overmind or many celebrates the terrans can shake the control after a while and kill themselves. Extra terrans are most likely put in the infester tech building.

Next time Blizzard does a science fiction game, please, for your own sakes, talk to a real biologist first. Yes, you can squeeze nearly all nutrients into a teaspoon, but you need biomass and something for caloric intake. That's not going to cut it.

@Goyathla: Next time you feel like chiming in, for your own sake, think.

He said that would provide the nutrition, necessary. You can consume a great number of things for sustenance. However, they would not likely contain everything you (as a species) require to grow. You've seen that there are animals, critters and vegetation on the planets in game yes? Trust me, there's food out there. The terrans are not the only species in the sector that require nutrition...
