StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 2

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 2

In the second part of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers some of the community’s most burning lore questions.

Question: Jim had a family before he met Kerrigan — a son and wife. How does that play a role in his "one true love" vibe with Sarah?

Answer: We've never said Kerrigan was Jim's one true love.

Jim had a wonderful life for a few short years, and he lost it all. He entered a new phase of his life — or returned to an older one — as a soldier, where the days burn quicker and hotter. Emotions run high. Jim had strong feelings for Sarah, even loved her, but none of that is betrayed his feelings for his family. People grieve, and they move on...eventually.

Question: At the end of Wings of Liberty, Mengsk's empire was collapsing. The zerg had overrun most of the fringe worlds and were encroaching on the core worlds. Raynor had revealed Mengsk's genocide of Tarsonis to all the people of the Dominion, and they were in open revolt and rioting out in the streets of the major cities, including Augustgrad. His son had then commandeered half the fleet in a desperate move to kill the Queen of Blades. How has Mengsk maintained control of the Terran Dominion with all this war and conflict?

Answer: With a mix of brutality, incredible intrigue, and old-fashioned cunning. Mengsk's empire at the time of Heart of the Swarm is by no means secure, but he is crafty and has many mechanisms to hold on to power. If the Swarm had been out to dismantle his empire, that would have been too much to withstand...or if the Kel-Morians had still been a viable enemy at that time, that could have been the tipping point. But remember, the Swarm was taking planets only to search for the artifact, and the Swarm fractured when the Queen of Blades disappeared. And the Kel-Morians were barely holding it together at that time.

Question: Why did Jim Raynor turn his back on everything that happened in the original StarCraft and Brood War, in that instead of killing Kerrigan (he watched her do some BAD stuff), he fell in love with her?

Answer: The first thing to consider is how Jim perceived Kerrigan. Certainly Horner, Tychus, and the Hyperion crew all viewed her as an evil being who should pay for her crimes. They didn't see a distinction between Kerrigan and the Queen of Blades, and for a long time Jim probably didn't either. But the moment Valerian uttered those words about saving Sarah, a door opened in Jim's mind. Could there truly be the "old" Sarah — cold-eyed assassin, but not a mass murderer — somewhere inside the ruthless alien queen? Was it possible? Jim didn’t know the answer to that for sure. He'd seen the Queen of Blades deceive everyone before, and he wouldn’t put all his trust in Valerian's judgment. So for Jim, it came down to his gut, as it always does. Jim had a choice: hold on to his hatred for Mengsk and the Queen of Blades, or grasp the hope that perhaps he could fix this. And his gut told him to take that chance.

Jim has lost so much in his life — more than most people — and that made the idea of redeeming Kerrigan all the more powerful in his mind. He'd lost family, friends, worlds, ideals...and he thought he'd lost Kerrigan, too. Then he learned there was hope of redeeming her. This was the first time he'd had a chance to regain something he'd thought lost, his only opportunity to make things better rather than stop them from getting worse.

Question: How do units like the mutalisk and banshee fly in space if there is no air?

Answer: Another great question that has been the subject of internal debate, hair pulling, and furniture throwing. Basically, mutas produce a gas that pushes against their own mass as it’s excreted. Even in a vacuum, this causes propulsion, because the gas is pushing against the muta as it’s expelled. Maneuvering is difficult for a muta, but it can release the gas in a range of directions.

When mutas are in an atmosphere, they simply use their wings. The gas is reserved for space travel. And if anyone's wondering why they flap their wings in space? Instinct. Just like a dog pumping its hind leg when you scratch its belly.

For any terran or protoss unit, the answer is even simpler: it’s outfitted with standard propulsion equipment only for use when traveling in space.

For heaven's sake, why don't you just accept the answer that was provided by the developer? Someone asked the question, and Blizzard took an effort to answer. That's really nice of them. By the way, for your imformation, the mutalisks aren't real. Are you that desperate to justify everything so that it must make physical or logical sense? It's a GAME! Just like the Santa Claus story, it's for the kids so that they can look forward to Christmas. Don't be a jerk and tell them it's impossible to fly through the air and deliver presents to every household in one day.

I mean look at mutas body, it looks like a toothpicks with wings. Where the heck are they storing the gas? Their body must be a liquid nitrigen gas tank. Even that doesnt allow it to fly long/fast enough

It would've made more sense if mutas are simply loaded up in overlord when space travel. Corruptors can defend the fleet in space... And mutas are only hatched inside a atmosphere... But I guess blizz has to justify everything since they have shown it in one of the cut scene. Muta farting simply make no sense. I'd like to see the dev team to admit that they simply made a mistake. They are not physicsts. Fans will understand.

What story reason can you give for the removal of dark archons? Why can't dark and high templars create a new powerful archon? Wasn't the unification of the 2 forces suppose to bring about untold power?

Also, tassadar's sacrifice was on of the most impactful moments of Starcraft 1's history. It showed the potential of the protoss and had a great message of unity and harmony bringing out strength. Don't you think by reviving Tassadar, you've cheapened all the trials and tribulations he went through? His death is no longer as emotionally impactful, now that he's not really dead.

@GhostFall: I was wondering about the Archon too. But as for Tassadar he's not really alive or dead, he's on a higher plane of existence. Maybe when he combined his energies he released his soul into the void, something along the lines of Obi-Wan from Star Wars perhaps?

Does Megnsk have secret alliances with the protoss or rulers back on earth? He's not going to get killed of in Heart of the Swarm is he? He deserves to make it until the last cut scene of the last installment.

We know that high templars and dark templars have different energies. Tassadar mixed together both of those energies together to destory the overmind. If he used those energies more would he turn into a different unit? Like a mixture of an archon and a dark archon?

@DusterMan: As far as I can tell, the answer would be yes. Adun also combined both types of energies to save the Dark Templar during the fighting that occurred when they were banished from Aiur. The same thing happened to him as happened to Tassadar, he simply disappeared. They both may hove gone onto a "higher" existence. Tassadar says he is not dead in SC2 and the Dark Templar believe that Adun will return one day when he is truly needed. We will have to see what happens, it's pretty cool stuff.

Here is an intriguing question, what if the Dominion Emperor was actually possessed by another Xel'naga artifact that subconsciously controlled his decisions and actions, including him altering the Zerg themselves so he would always be in power to the end or if he does die anybody else who picks up his artifact would be cursed as well.

If the almighty Protoss worship the Xel'naga creators of both the zerg and Protoss then are the Protoss so mighty (opening statement) The Xel'naga have taken there small parts of the game but really I want to know is the dark voice going to be "The fallen one" as the legend tells but there are so many thoughts that pop up when I think about the Xel'naga like is Duran the fallen one, dark voice or Dr.Naru (forgot the name) :) because I know for a fact Duran isn't a human or a Zerg or a Protoss he is either the dark voices assistant or he is the dark voice. And also as i was researching I go far out to research. I saw the supposed release date for STARCRAFT 3 :) it was in japanese chinese or korean don't know but the release date is 2022 but thats only what it said probably not until like 2030 or something but any way or the other the teaser show Kerrigan on a Protoss world scary to be her. But wait a minute she is a human so i'm guessing on Legend of the void she clears her name. Also how come in Heart of the swarm she wants to become the queen of blades again is it an addiction to be ruler of the swarm. So put all of this together in on eternal mutation (Zergy Zergy)
/ Lore part. Why are the Xel'naga here? why did they make the Zerg or the Protoss Is there a reason to there madness? and if the Xel'naga created the Zerg shouldn't they be loyal to the Xel'naga OH! no they want to make the Eternal Swarm The mix of Zerg and Xel'naga whats next is there a Protoss Terran mix wait yes the is Gestalt Zero. So now what the series is making an end to it self way way way... To fast seriously I swear Legend of the void is the ender of all starcraft unless they add another sector to go to. Is there going to be a Protoss Xel'naga hybrid or Terran Xel'naga hybrid that is my question (Long questio right?) and if any further questions want to be added my number is 679 to add and search for me. Thank you for reading my long question Bye Bye now!

The concept of Zerg creatures with hard enough exoskeletons evolved to the point of being able to function in a vacuum is interesting, but hard to swallow. Their eyes, ears, and other various vulnerable spots are immune to the cold and negative pressure of outer space? Are air units uniquely evolved for this, or are all of the Zerg structures and units protected in such a way? The is no way Zealots are evolved to the point at which they can do this, yet they, along with templars and archons, do not have any protective suits. The only logical explanation is that all the maps have containment fields surrounding the platforms/debris/rocks on which the battles are being fought, and that artificial gravity and environments are in place. That leaves only Zerg air units to need the protection of a hardened carapace, but I find it hard to believe that the bat-like wings of a Mutalisk have enough armor to protect the delicate blood vessels needed to keep the flexible, thin flesh alive... just saying...

If you have ever read the Starcraft 2 books it has the info there. The protoss dont really "breathe" or are as susceptable to harsh environments as the terrans are.
