StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 2

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 2

In the second part of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers some of the community’s most burning lore questions.

Question: Jim had a family before he met Kerrigan — a son and wife. How does that play a role in his "one true love" vibe with Sarah?

Answer: We've never said Kerrigan was Jim's one true love.

Jim had a wonderful life for a few short years, and he lost it all. He entered a new phase of his life — or returned to an older one — as a soldier, where the days burn quicker and hotter. Emotions run high. Jim had strong feelings for Sarah, even loved her, but none of that is betrayed his feelings for his family. People grieve, and they move on...eventually.

Question: At the end of Wings of Liberty, Mengsk's empire was collapsing. The zerg had overrun most of the fringe worlds and were encroaching on the core worlds. Raynor had revealed Mengsk's genocide of Tarsonis to all the people of the Dominion, and they were in open revolt and rioting out in the streets of the major cities, including Augustgrad. His son had then commandeered half the fleet in a desperate move to kill the Queen of Blades. How has Mengsk maintained control of the Terran Dominion with all this war and conflict?

Answer: With a mix of brutality, incredible intrigue, and old-fashioned cunning. Mengsk's empire at the time of Heart of the Swarm is by no means secure, but he is crafty and has many mechanisms to hold on to power. If the Swarm had been out to dismantle his empire, that would have been too much to withstand...or if the Kel-Morians had still been a viable enemy at that time, that could have been the tipping point. But remember, the Swarm was taking planets only to search for the artifact, and the Swarm fractured when the Queen of Blades disappeared. And the Kel-Morians were barely holding it together at that time.

Question: Why did Jim Raynor turn his back on everything that happened in the original StarCraft and Brood War, in that instead of killing Kerrigan (he watched her do some BAD stuff), he fell in love with her?

Answer: The first thing to consider is how Jim perceived Kerrigan. Certainly Horner, Tychus, and the Hyperion crew all viewed her as an evil being who should pay for her crimes. They didn't see a distinction between Kerrigan and the Queen of Blades, and for a long time Jim probably didn't either. But the moment Valerian uttered those words about saving Sarah, a door opened in Jim's mind. Could there truly be the "old" Sarah — cold-eyed assassin, but not a mass murderer — somewhere inside the ruthless alien queen? Was it possible? Jim didn’t know the answer to that for sure. He'd seen the Queen of Blades deceive everyone before, and he wouldn’t put all his trust in Valerian's judgment. So for Jim, it came down to his gut, as it always does. Jim had a choice: hold on to his hatred for Mengsk and the Queen of Blades, or grasp the hope that perhaps he could fix this. And his gut told him to take that chance.

Jim has lost so much in his life — more than most people — and that made the idea of redeeming Kerrigan all the more powerful in his mind. He'd lost family, friends, worlds, ideals...and he thought he'd lost Kerrigan, too. Then he learned there was hope of redeeming her. This was the first time he'd had a chance to regain something he'd thought lost, his only opportunity to make things better rather than stop them from getting worse.

Question: How do units like the mutalisk and banshee fly in space if there is no air?

Answer: Another great question that has been the subject of internal debate, hair pulling, and furniture throwing. Basically, mutas produce a gas that pushes against their own mass as it’s excreted. Even in a vacuum, this causes propulsion, because the gas is pushing against the muta as it’s expelled. Maneuvering is difficult for a muta, but it can release the gas in a range of directions.

When mutas are in an atmosphere, they simply use their wings. The gas is reserved for space travel. And if anyone's wondering why they flap their wings in space? Instinct. Just like a dog pumping its hind leg when you scratch its belly.

For any terran or protoss unit, the answer is even simpler: it’s outfitted with standard propulsion equipment only for use when traveling in space.

Well, I guess now I know why my Mutas cost so much gas...good mileage, though.

2 Questions- If infestation is designed to make a sinlge species incorporated into the whole of the Zerg collective then how come Terrans arent able to be stabily added to the swarm as a whole and not used as either suicide bombers, or as cannon fodder. Shouldnt the terrans by now been assimalated into the Swarms genetic structure like the rest of the Zerg creatures. I understand why Protoss are near impossible to infest due to the Khala but what makes Terrans so damn resistant to incorporation into the swarm because they can be infested so is it not feasible for a larva to be able to mutate into an infested terran or is there some underlying reason for this resistance.

Question 2: We've seen examples of Terran DNA being mixed together with Protoss as in the subject Gestalt Zero and the mutates which reulted in a unique species of both species is it feasible that the protoss and or zerg could naturally procreate aand create a Hyrbid Human/Protoss and or Zerg or is it only feasible through genetic manipulation.

@Abathur: 1) Humans are being integrated into the swarm, but I think that the lore maintains that lesser species can be completely mimicked, but that higher levels of evolution can only be imitated or infested. This is why Infestors are needed to mimic the Terran form and weaponry. The simple fact that the Terran race is a weak and useless form (as far as natural biological weapons go, no claws or huge teeth or acid spit or spines, etc..) there would be no point in creating dozens of swarm-humans from larvae. The Infestor simply creates a being with a short life that imitates the assault rifle of a Marine, but it is not a Marine equipped with a mechanical assault rifle made in a factory. This is why Infestors cannot imitate tanks or Thors or hellions, etc.... They can infest them with a probe that presumably punctures the hull and takes control of the human's mind inside the vehicle, but that is not infestation, but rather manipulation, so that is why it is only temporary.

2) As to your second question, it is intriguing and I would like to see it explained, but probably won't get anything concrete until the Void

@Abathur: To the first one, the swarm is made up of animals. the "hive mind" would have a harder time controlling a sentient species for very long. Humans also have very little value from a "natural weapon" standpoint, so there is no real gain in using them as widespread soldiers.

To the 2nd question: It is highly improbable that humans could procreate with either Protoss or Zerg in much the same way that carp do not procreate with sardines. There is likely a vast difference in the genomes of protoss, zerg and terrans so that a embryo with both DNA would not function properly if the !@#$% were even able to enter the egg. This is assuming that zerg and protoss are earth-like in their reproductive traits. Half-breeds don't happen between species, a hybrid would NEED to be genetically spliced.

When the super nova blast from the artifact killed all the zerg (in the vicinity) and turned Kerrigan human again how come she can still take control of the swarm when she is not zerg anymore?

Gas inside mutas would make them instantly explode a painful death as soon as they entered a vacuum.

@Tomsonx: Do space ships explode in space? no. Do they have gas inside of them? yes. Do marines space suits explode when they exit the ships? no. why? because the armor acts as a membrane strong enough to hold back the vacuum.

I am sorry, but we are throwing out a major law of physics with mutas. The problem isn't that they would die without air, the problem is that, due to the nature of pressure, if they have air... no, ANY gas, the pressure inside of the muta and on the outside will equalize and rip it appart. What's up with that? How do they survive it? Also, the gas idea, uh-uh, a big no no, space, pressure, all the thingies I just mentioned?

@DuckTemplar: just like a spaceships use fuel tanks, the zerg prob have an organic version. They fart around in space.
Login to rate
@DuckTemplar: It will TRY to equalize, but if whatever containment organ keeps the gas inside is strong enough, it can withstand the force of the gas' pressure. Humans are ripped apart in space, but that's because we aren't designed to live in vacuums. Mutas very well could be.

@DuckTemplar: If that were true, no shuttle or rocket would survive in space, and astronauts wouldn't be able to space walk. And as for the gasses it is very well thought out, seeing as how you don't need to vent it all, and humans do it with specialized packs to maneuver in space. It is apparent that the Muta has a hardened exoskeleton that protects them from the harshness of space.

@Kiingofcoffe: I think the right question should be: what role does Tassadar play in the up coming games. If he does have a role in it, then can I take control of him?

And for the record, yes Tassadar did die. Physically at least. But the Protoss in Starcraft universe is a strange race and as long as his spiritual connection still live on then I think in some sense he is "alive"

Some questions:
1.- How do Zergs travel long distances in the space in a short amount of time? It makes sense for Terrans and Protoss' since they have enormous sub-warp engines that gives them an insanely high force - acceleration in half a second, but with Zergs, how is the mechanic?
