StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 5

In part five of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers more of the community’s most burning lore questions.
Question: Why don't battleships have shields? When the Hyperion engaged the Bucephalus, someone clearly said the Dominion battleships didn’t have their shields up, which implies that Battlecruisers have shields.
Answer: Battlecruisers maintain shields in space, when coming out of warp, in case of attack from other capital-class ships. They are completely vulnerable at that moment (as the Bucephalus was), so "shields up" is standard. Shields are also used during orbital insertion when a planet has an atmosphere. But Terran shields hog far too much energy to keep up all the time. While in an atmosphere and fighting smaller units, Terran ships rely on their thick armor and superior firepower.
Also, please recall that in Wings of Liberty there is an upgrade you can get, the Defensive Matrix, which absorbs 200 damage before failing.
Question: Why didn't the Protoss resurrect or unban the Colossi when Aiur was being overrun?
Answer: They recalled their Motherships! (I'm pretty sure there was a story written about that. :P) Resurrecting the colossi would have been far too slow a process. They simply wouldn't have gotten online in time to make a difference.
Question: In Wings of Liberty, Kerrigan appears to be resigned to the destruction of the universe at the hands of the Fallen One, which seems contrary to what we know of her character. What led her to take such a fatalistic view of things?
Answer: Another great one. The Queen of Blades was clearly a scrapper who would fight tooth and nail, lie, manipulate, and do anything else to win when there was even a fraction of a chance. What happens when you are all-powerful . . . but still come to believe that you have no chance at all? What does that do to you? And remember, although she possessed a great deal more independence than the Overmind, she was still full of Zerg mutagen, which means she was at the very least influenced by the will of the Dark Voice.
Question: What was the UED doing between the events of Brood War and StarCraft II?
Answer: At first they tried to discover the fate of their expedition. Once they did that, they probably deliberated what steps (if any) to take next. And whatever they decided, they certainly needed some time to put their plans/materiel together.
What I'm saying is . . . they got their butts handed to them in Brood War. They could come back, but if they did, it would not be immediately. Men, materiel, political will . . . these things take time.
Question: In the introductory booklet for the original StarCraft, we learn that the Xel'naga created the Zerg in an attempt to make a creature that was pure not in form (like their "failed experiment," the Protoss) but in function. They created the Overmind and tried to remain hidden from it as they orbited Char, slowly influencing the evolution of the Zerg. But then the story goes that the Overmind learned of the Xel'naga's presence and attacked them, driving them clear out of the sector. If the Xel'naga aren't around now because the Overmind crushed their fleet, how could the Overmind have been enslaved by the Xel'naga all along, as WoL says?
Answer: Who said the Overmind was enslaved by the Xel'naga?
Question: Years ago a question was presented on whether or not the Umojan Protectorate and Kel-Morian Combine directed their own respective ghost programs. We now know that the Umojan program evolved into the shadowguards, but what of the KMC's program?
Answer: I fear that whatever R&D the KMC was doing was put on hold after the disastrous (for them) results of the Guild Wars. They're really not doing well these days.
Question: In the StarCraft manual, it was mentioned that the Umojan Protectorate sought a cultural exchange with the Protoss because it felt that Terrans had much to learn from the more advanced race. Is this still a goal of the Protectorate's, and if so, has it made any progress?
Answer: It must be so frustrating for Umojan scientists! They can't intercept/decode the long-range transmissions of a race that communicates via the Khala. (True, the Khala has limits on its range for full-on conversation, but those limits are pretty high.) So the Umojans have to rely entirely upon the Protoss and their willingness to talk. Alas, the Protoss have little interest in the doings of Terrans, aside from a few special individuals like Jim Raynor.
Question: Why is it that you can completely understand the Wings of Liberty storyline by playing through only StarCraft 1's campaign? I feel like anything unraveled in Brood War is *not* mentioned anywhere in Wings of Liberty (disregard the Duran mission; that's considered a "bonus").
Answer: So something in Wings that requires Brood War knowledge doesn't count? Much of the content in Wings is not critical path; that doesn't make it invalid. It just means the player has the option to experience that part of the story or not. So the Duran mission cannot be disregarded.
I will say that this is another area where we made a mistake. The installer for Wings of Liberty plays a recap, and many have noted that it doesn't really cover Brood War. Our mistake here was not conveying the intent of this installer recap. It was NOT intended for anyone who frequents these forums. We honestly thought that you, the lore community, would say, “Oh, I know everything they're going to say," and go off to get a snack or something while the game installed. The installer was intended for those who were new to the StarCraft franchise or had played StarCraft/Brood War 12 years earlier and barely remembered them. So the recap was covering only the most basic things one needed to know to follow the story. Why mention the UED when you don't see much of them in Wings?
Now, you might say that since the recap didn't need to mention Brood War, that's a sign of how little it was represented in the story. I reference this in another answer somewhere, but I'll paraphrase here: most of the events of BW had their impact in terms of characters. The geopolitical situation at the end was not terribly different than it was at the start. The biggest political/military development of BW was the arrival of the UED, and they were out of commission by the end.
I completely understand why those of you who are invested in StarCraft's storyline were disappointed to hear a recap that ignored most of Brood War. That set the stage from the very beginning to make it seem as if Brood War were being ignored. We had a version that covered the entire storyline in detail, and we should have put that up on the web when Wings was released. And we definitely should have done a better job of explaining what that installer recap was supposed to do.

If you’re looking for more lore, here’s part 1 of our StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A, here’s part 2, here’s part 3, and here’s part 4. We’ll have many more answers to your burning questions in the weeks to come.

When the UED invaded the Korpulu Sector, they pretty much had the same technology (minus advancements like medics and valks) as the terran there. According to lore, two terran groups had been separated for hundreds of years. Even if they started at the same point, shouldn't their technologies evolved to different paths over the centuries?
Thank you
Why do Zerg buildings release broodlings when they die? Excess Material?
What really happened to Johnny, Raynor's son?
How did Ruom (From Starcraft: Frontline 4 - Creep), a protoss zealot, get mutated by the creep when it has been stated the Khala protects Protoss from infestation?
I know Dark Templar would probably be susceptible to infestation (or not) but how did the creep cause Ruom to go insane/mutate?
1) It's been stated that the Zerg cannot infest the Protoss, which brings to mind a question: How did Kerrigan control Raszagal?
2) What were the Umojan Protectorate and the Kel-Morian Mining Guild doing during the Brood War? Did they have any involvement in it whatsoever? And what about the Second Great War? Have they been involved in the events of StarCraft II thus far, or are they just sitting back? Or maybe they've even been annihilated by the Zerg already?
3) How did Duran fool Kerrigan into thinking he was an infested Terran? It seems to me that she should be able to sense who is and isn't under her control, but he had her completely bluffed. This especially puzzles me when you factor in the short story Hybrid and also the Dark Templar Saga, both of which had Kerrigan striving to make an infested Terran that would maintain sentience... Yet despite her efforts up to that point failing, Duran- who was clearly a creature capable of exercising his own thought and freewill- is treated as though he's always been a Zerg (despite the fact that we're never given any evidence to think that he looks any different than when he was working inside the UED). I know you're trying to avoid going into Duran too much, but I feel this point has long needed addressing.
4) Is there a lore reason for why command centers, hatcheries, and nexi cannot be built close to mineral patches or vespene geysers?
My question is what happened to the following characters?
In the original Starcraft there are 5 characters I would like to know what happened to. The 5 characters are the ones which you as a player represent throughout the game being:
1) The Terran commander who follows Raynor at the end at the first campaign
2) The Zerg Cerebrate who was put in charge of Kerrigan and who went to Aiur
3) The Protoss executor who ended up following Tassadar, helped slay the Overmind and who was the same executor in the expansion when Artanis was introduced
4) The Terran commander of the UED
5) The Zerg Cerebrate who Kerrigan released from UED control which helped/served her in the brood wars
My personal guess is
1) Matt Horner, 2) Dead, 3) have no idea, 4) dead, 5) have no idea
Please help if anyone can answer me what happened to them
1)Well i don t really recall the name but you meet the magistrate in the first terran campaign in the book devil's due(2nd book of raynor an tychus)
2) Propablly dead during the invasion of aiur. (or died while trying to recreate the over mind in the brood war by kerrigan)
3) It is confirmed that the executor is ARTANIS (awesome right?)
4) Probably dead because blizzard doesn t want to deal with UED anymore
5) Probably killed by kerrigan after she became supreme !@#$% queen of the universe :) can't allow something that can control zerg lurk around right?
It's better to imagine that the lore of StarCraft ended at Brood War than listen to this drivel. Get rid of the campaign in SC2, and make it multiplayer only. It's clear the SP is a drain on your resources.
- The Terran Dominion being severely weakened after attacks by the UED and Kerrigan's Brood. Kerrigan could've easily wiped the Terrans off the galaxy but stayed her hand.
- After losing their homeworld of Aiur, the Protoss survivors lost the Dark Templar world of Shakuras as well. They're a race that's also on the verge of annihilation by the Zerg, but suddenly rebounds with a great fleet in Wings of Liberty?!
- The loss of major characters such as Fenix, Aldaris, and General Duke from the original StarCraft. These individuals played a crucial role for their respective factions, but were ignored by Blizzard.
- The discovery of the Hybrids by Zeratul as well as gaining some insight into the character of Duran and his sinister plans.
The point is as a result of the Brood Wars, both the Terran and Protoss's military capabilities were severely diminished. Frankly speaking .. WOL's plot should've been:
Kerrigan launches her attack on the Terran and Protoss, who were still rebuilding their forces. Raynor was still an outlaw on the run, and had managed to rally some Terran dissidents to his cause. The Protoss were unable to hold back the Zerg and their inability to do so causes extremist factions to adopt hostile measures towards the Zerg and Terran. The Protoss launches an invasion on Char and the Dominion Core Worlds. The Terran Kel Morian Combine and and Umojan Protectorate forms an alliance with the Dominion against the Zerg and Protoss. It's total war between all three until they all get destroyed by the Hybrids. THE END.
They have claimed in patch notes that previous unbalances were "bugs".
Now, they do this:
We all know that the Zerg were created by the Xel'naga, so when they say this right in the campaign
"The Overmind was formed with thought and reason... but not free will."
Who formed the Overmind? The Xel'naga. Did they form it with free will? No.
In the previous Q&A, was this an unreasonable statement?
"When it was created, the Overmind was not given free will."
Bliz showed no sign of it.
So, the Xel'naga formed the Overmind, yes. It was formed without free will, yes. Not having free will is the same as being enslaved, of course.
Put these together, and you get: The Xel'naga created the Overmind in a way that it was enslaved to them.
Then what does Blizzard have the balls to say?
"Who said the Overmind was enslaved by the Xel'naga?"
"So, the Xel'naga formed the Overmind, yes. It was formed without free will, yes... Put these together, and you get: The Xel'naga created the Overmind in a way that it was enslaved to them.
Then what does Blizzard have the balls to say?
"Who said the Overmind was enslaved by the Xel'naga?""
I really really really hope this is addressed in the next Q&A. It's right there in the game: the Xel'Naga created the Overmind. The Overmind was formed without free will, or so they say in Starcraft 2.
Therefore, the Overmind was enslaved by the Xel'Naga. Or, maybe it wasn't, since the Xel'Naga were also wiped out by the rebellious Overmind.
Wait, what?
So which is it? Did the Overmind rebel against the Xel'Naga and pursue it's own agenda? Did the herpderp Dark Voice tell it to so this? Did the Xel'Naga form the Overmind with free will or DIDN'T THEY? Nothing is adding up.
-Protoss are immune to the Zerg Hyper-Evolutionary Virus(ZHEV) due to the Khala(Please explain why.)
Why aren't the Nerazim ever infested then?
What I'm really curious about, considering the lore and canon from the Starcraft manual, is just how big is this universe, the various factions, and should we expect that in the other expansions, Raynor, the Dominion and Zeratul will take a back seat to happenings around the universe involving the Umojans, the lost tribes of the Khala and the Void, and any liberated cerebrates/broods on the other side of the universe? And what of the other planets where the Xel'Naga were playing god that the Protoss took upon themselves to steward? Are we going to see some of these worlds and is there a dove tail story happening to coincide with event from Brood Wars that would give the universe a fighting chance against the Dark Voice? I'm eager to hear more.
