GSL Code S Semifinals and Finals at IPL 5 this Weekend

GSL Code S Semifinals and Finals at IPL 5 this Weekend

In what is guaranteed to be a blowout weekend for StarCraft II, the GSL 2012 World Championship and the GSL 2012 Season 5 Code S semifinals and finals are taking place this weekend alongside IPL 5 at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. You can find more information on IPL 5 here.

The first match of the GSL Season 5 Code S semifinals pits Lee 'Bogus' Shin Hyung (Terran) against Ko 'HyuN' Seok Hyun (Zerg), and begins on Friday, November 30 at 6:00 p.m. PST. This could be quite an interesting matchup, as either of these two former Brood War pro players could be considered the favorite to claim the title of champion. Bogus has, so far, dropped just three games in his first Code S appearance, while Hyun claims ownership to the longest win streak of all time at IPL's Fight Club, with an astonishing 14 straight victories. In the second matchup, Kwon 'Sniper' Tae Hoon (Zerg) challenges Kim 'Ryung' Dong Won (Terran) for a seat at the finals. Ryung, whose history with the GSL dates back to May of 2011, has an edge over his opponent in terms of stage experience, but he may find quite a challenge in Sniper, who recently all-killed Ryung’s former team, SlayerS, during round 2 of GSTL Season 3.

After an exciting and unpredictable Code S season, only one thing is certain this weekend -- a brand new GSL champion will be crowned, as none of the remaining players have advanced this far in the tournament before. Be sure to tune in for the finals, which will be broadcast on Saturday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m. PST.

The GSL 2012 World Championship is a team event that pits five top S-class South Korean StarCraft II players against the "World All Star" team, which is made up of five of the best non-Korean players the globe has to offer. Korean players were invited based on their GSL ranking, while non-Korean competitors were selected first by popular vote, then whittled down through separate qualifier competitions to join special invitees Johan 'NaNiwa' Lucchesi and Ilyes 'Stephano' Satouri on the World All Star team.

The World Championship is split up into three rounds, each with a different format. The first round begins Friday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m. PST and will showcase a series of five 1v1 single games. Each game pits one South Korean player against one World All Star player. The team with the most victories will be declared the winner of round one. The second round starts Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. PST, and will be a best of nine in a standard team all-kill format. The third and final round will feature a lone 1v1 game, or "ace match," which will only be played if a tiebreaker is necessary.

Catch all of the IPL and GSL action live by tuning in to IPL’s official stream, which starts each day at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 29 through Sunday, December 2.
