StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 11

StarCraft II Creative Development Q&A - Part 11

In part eleven of our continuing series, Brian Kindregan, co-lead writer of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and lead writer of Heart of the Swarm, answers more of the community’s most burning lore questions.

Question: In times of peace, what do templar, judicators, khalai, and Nerazim do?

Answer: Practice, man, practice!

Question: Throughout Wings of Liberty, Kerrigan invaded several planets and systems around the Koprulu sector in search of the artifact pieces. As a result of this, she must have come across several new strains to assimilate into the zerg army. Through this exploration, have there been new zerg strains introduced to the Swarm?

Answer: The Swarm did indeed encounter lots of new genetic material! There was not time to incorporate these strains before the battle on Char, but the Swarm is still aware of the other types of essences out there.

Question: Why haven't the protoss advanced in tech over the course of the games?

Answer: The protoss are an inward-looking race. They feel they achieved the perfect approach to technology and civilization long ago, and now they have little interest in changing. There are certainly protoss innovators, but in general they prefer steady, methodical progress. The protoss basically value stability above all. New tech has a way of changing everything.

Question: Raynor and Zeratul had a vision. We learned it was the Overmind's and that it showed the future (or a possible future). But how and why did the Overmind have this vision in the first place?

Answer: The Overmind's consciousness was molded by the entity referred to here as the Dark Voice. During that process, the Overmind was exposed to some of the Dark Voice's plans for the future. Scattered, confused images, sensations, ideas, concepts. Nothing clear or concrete. That vision was a narrative the Overmind constructed from bits and pieces, and it was about all that the Overmind could glean from the time spent with the Dark Voice.

Question: Is there any chance that the Swarm could manifest some kind of compassion if the zerg stopped being driven by the singular goal of protoss destruction?

Answer: The mandates and operating parameters that kept the Overmind from having complete free will were mostly subverted when the Queen of Blades, an infested terran who retained much of her sapience, took over. (As I've said elsewhere, there was still some influence from the Dark Voice, as she had lots of zerg mutagen floating around in her system, but her non-zerg sapience freed her up a great deal.)

From that point on, the zerg became capable of acting in whatever way their leader was capable of acting. But why would the leader of the Swarm ever want or need to show compassion? Compassion would not serve to grow the Swarm, and it's unlikely any race would ever accept the Swarm as allies or equals.

Question: If the zerg are biological life-forms, how can they survive traveling across the universe without any air, shields, or armor suits?

Answer: They can adapt to handle those environments. The question of how they can do things without tools is a uniquely human way to look at a problem. When we can't do something, we build a tool to do it for us. A race that can evolve and adapt so rapidly and so well simply doesn't think that way. As an example, there are creatures that thrive on the bottom of the ocean here on Earth, in places where our tools and equipment have only recently allowed us to go.

Question: The "new" Jim Raynor seems kind of weak. He seems to have forgotten about Fenix and all the abominations Kerrigan has done, and more than that, he killed his best friend for her. He is no longer the mighty badass warrior from SC1. Why is that?

Answer: When people go through traumatic events, it takes a toll on them. They process it for a long time afterward and try to cope in different ways. The Jim Raynor in Wings is a man who has been to Hell and back many times, and it has certainly changed him.

Who do you think is more heroic: a character who has been through all that pain and suffering, yet manages to overcome his trauma, climb back to his feet, and engage in badassery; or a character who is just always badass? I know which one I think, but opinions may vary. J

Question: Do zerg breathe in space, or do they bring oxygen (or whatever they breathe) with them?

Answer: Most zerg are not adapted for space travel by themselves. They would be aboard larger zerg that are adapted for it, like leviathans. Any zerg that you see in space either has vast stores of oxygen within it or has been adapted to not require oxygen. Depends on the particular adaptation you're talking about!

Question: Why does Tychus Findlay, who always smokes a cigar in his armor, never get choked?

Answer: I'd like to say it's because he's got special air-circulation pumps. But the truth is, he's just that tough.

Question: Is there any history between Tychus Findlay and the girl on his armor?

Answer: The girl is Kyla Velassi, a popular entertainer who is featured in the text crawl at the bottom of the UNN news segments. She has an entire storyline that plays out there, if you can manage to read it.

That decal is already on his armor when he comes out of cold sleep. So either someone put it there while he was out of it, or Kyla has been around a long time and is still going strong. The celebrities of the Koprulu sector may just have their own version of Botox!

The 2nd question, they say Zerg didn't have the time to strain the genes before the battle of char, but before in an interview, one of the SCII dev's said that they designed the Zerg to evolve quickly whether its the enviroment or any genes they found. ??

I wonder about what happened to Lurkers. Clearly units had to be dropped/adopted for Wings of Liberty and I like the Roach as a fair substitute. Now in HOTS the Swarm Host is making an entrance. I'm stoked for this new unit as I always felt the zerg needed a "tank" style unit on the ground. I just wonder why this thing was on the benches in Wings of Liberty. Keep up the good work, cheers from Canada.

For me, im not really happy with the "new" Jim Raynor either. You already answered the questions that i've had myself. I guess i'm just not happy with the answer. Kerrigan was beyond a monster in BW and Jim swore to kill her. Now its like all of her murdering and backstabbing never even happened. You said after 4 years he had a lot of time to reflect. Well i reflected over it for 12 years and i would still kill her...but i'm not Jim Raynor i guess. I'm all about compassion and forgiveness but even restoring Kerrigan to her human form does not and should not excuse her crimes. There comes a time when you have to pay the piper and its long overdue for kerrigan. I just dont like how soft and romantically involved Jim has become.
The one redeeming thing is that i guess Jim saved her because of the urgings of Zeratul. He did the greater good because he realizes she might be key in saving them in the future. But Jim is way too romantically involved when he really shouldnt be. I'd still hate her for what she did, no matter what feelings i had for her in the past.

@kidbid: Jim would want to kill Kerrigan, but he had to forgive it and forget. He soon realized that Kerrigan wasnt herself then and now she is or at least most of her.

@kidbid: Forget the years and time to reflect for a moment then. You answered your own question again. If he had killed her, he'd be dooming the entire sector, which is the whole reason he is fighting the war. And he didn't just hear about this, he saw it first hand using the memory crystal.

You honestly think he would kill her after expereincing his entire races extinction? If he was that stupid and head strong, he probably would have died before the broodwars.

A lot of these questions seem redundant to me. How many times has someone asked "How do Zergs breathe in space?" I've seem some interesting questions ...for example, about the new units in WoL and HoTS... but they haven't been answered.

I'm not seeing the Kerigan of flashpoint in the trailer from heart of the swarm. She has her conscience and it's killing her in the book. She doesn't just lose it again, that just doesn't fit? Is the game just going it's own direction and ignoring the book?

What is the Creep made out of? That can make Zerg Units run faster but, Terrain and Protoss can not build on it?

@MaDSqUiD: creep is made of... creep. its a separate organism, or cluster of organisms, a lot like coral only still alive.

@MaDSqUiD: I really like this question.

All zerg and zerg-related components (creep, buildings, and creatures) are living entities sensitive to the directives of telepathic control.

When a zerg unit courses over the creep, it may specifically undulate, harden, and/or bounce in order to facilitate that creature's movements. A large area of creep could even form small changes in air pressure allowing flying-units to move more speedily.

Like any other living organism, it has been evolved to attack invaders. When a large, clunky marine is stomping around on the creep it may not be fast enough to react, but when an SCV starts laying down the groundwork to a building, enzymes in the creep could start adapting and eating away at the structure. Trial-and-error has likely made it obvious to all races that building on creep is a bad idea and thus your workers simply refuse to.

Just my thoughts!

Kerrigan didn't look infested to me at the end of the game. Also in starcraft 1 infested terrans come from infested command centers and were really good for taking out buildings

Is Kerrigan actually Infested or is she just the first Terran/Zerg Hybrid? Comparing her to the other Hybrids and other Infested Terrans we know seem to indicate she is more of a Hybrid than just Infested.

@RuneK: she is a "special" infested. her DNA allowed for her to retain most of her individuality and personality when she was infested. however, she is indeed infested and not hybridized.

Major holes in questions 4. First off, according the original lore that I'm staring in the face in this book that was printed in 1996, The Zerg want to assimilate the Protoss, not destroy them. (In other words, they wanted to fuse with them.)

Also, as far as what I can see, the Dark Voice is not a Xel'Naga and it was the Xel'Naga who made the Overmind, and the Overmind also assimilated and killed all the Xel'Naga.

@Templarfreak: Assimilation would destroy the protoss.

not all the Xel'naga were assimilated into the overmind, although a large majority were.

@Templarfreak:

So they said, but in the actual game, no indication is ever given that the Overmind did anything to assimilate the Protoss; all you see is Zerg trying to kill Protoss. It doesn't help that Blizzard insists on making Protoss immune to infestation and the whole assimilation subplot was dropped in Brood War.

@JohnnyZeWolf: Well the xel'naga wanted the 2 species to merge overtime. When the Overmind, under the influences of the Dark Voice, attacked the Xel'naga and took their knowledge the Overmind found out about the protoss and the meaning of their experiments. The Dark Voice wanted the protoss dead and the Overmind was forced to attack them rather than assimilate them. What I'm trying to say is that the zerg and protoss were suppose to merge overtime. The Overmind learned all too quickly and the Dark Voice used this to his advantage.

Can we expect to see an improvement in the way the story is told in future expansions of SC2? Clearly by all the questions we've had to ask, many of us are lost in the dark. Will there be a better translation of things happening, and better references to the lore of SC1 that many of us love? How can we expect this improvement to come to the table, and are you guys considering bringing these improvements at the cost of "new" and "innovative" ways of storytelling? You've stated previously that an RTS can only do so much with the story, but I feel differently.

In the Dark Templar saga (book series that is part of the Starcraft lore), at the end (SPOILER ALERT!), Zeratul watched a Xel'Naga escape an "egg" like temple creation. It then flew up into space and joined hundreds of it's own kind. In a sudden flash, they all vanished but left behind a portal. Zeratul then entered the portal. Other than what happened to Zamara and the Dark Archon, what happened to Zeratul? It never said and yet here, in WoL, Zeratul acts like he did before like he never went through this portal. What did he see in that portal? How did he escape after going in?

@EvilCreature: @EvilCreature: What? That story been already told man with the "Whispers of Doom" mission... If you look back in the last book Zeratul notices the outline of a dark world on the other side. Its not a overly hard case putting two and two together to figure out that mystery world would be the latter identified as Ulaan in WoL. A nod or two to the books would’ve been nice but Blizzard chose not to integrate the DTS plotlines with WoL’s. Some things are for EU novels whilst the gameplay experience may deem Blizzard to work out a different storytelling approach in conveying us the general idea to their much wider audience.

Besides, why would Blizzard trap Zeratul inside an alternate universe? Kerrigan and her Swarm were able to arrive and leave Ulaan just as well without the use of portals...
