Add custom hotkeys and WASD for movement

Moving with arrow key is killing me , its uncomfortable. We should be able to customize our hotkeys or a least have one official profil with WASD keys.

For gamers , its natural to use WASD because your arm while on the chair armrest is straight and feel right + with the palm rest on many keyboard its comfortable. Its not the case with the arrow key... cant really use the palm rest and have to place your arm in a certain angle.

I dont care if "A" for Attack is not on "A" , what I care is the key I use the most and its the movement key.

Please add a official support for this or made an official statement about if its legal or not to use some hotkeys hacking you can see all around the internet with the msq thing

Thanks

I'm also hoping for WASD keys, it's annoying having to use mouse to move the camera.

what? you people use arrow keys to move the camera?? this is the first time i've heard of this. get used to moving the camera with the mouse. you'll need the keyboard for shortcuts and hotkeys.

you'll thank me later after you find out how much faster you can do things using keyboard shortcuts and using the minimap and mouse to move the camera.

...WASD!?

...Arm on the ARM REST?!

Are you aiming for Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome? Use proper posture! Also, mouse is significantly better than keys for moving your PoV. You want one hand on the left side basically since new default puts every hotkey cept youe 6-0 groups over there anyway, and the other ON YOUR FRICKEN MOUSE AT ALL GOD DAMNED TIMES!

This isnt SCI, you dont have to hop the keyboard for just about anything.

Yeah, I don't really get moving the camera with the keys. Everyone plays their own way I guess, but that's just slower and not as effective as using the mouse to scroll around the view, or just clicking the minimap where you want to look.

I did up my mouse scroll speed so that my screen moves more quickly. It was a little slow for me by default. I think I have it on 40% now (default was 20%, I think). That helps you get around small areas more quickly. For any big leaps, I always click the spot on the minimap that I want to see.

I play FPS with WASD too, but RTS just doesn't seem like it would work well like that IMHO.

I, for one, need to move the camera with the WASD keys. I have played every RTS this way for the past 10 years at least. Trying to change now would be like trying to play left handed, or with a trackball instead of a mouse. I suppose if I quit my job and practiced 10 hours a day left handed, I could probably adjust after a year or so, but otherwise, I need to play right-handed.

I have customized my camera movement keys to WASD and the rest of the hotkeys around them. I can move very precisely and fluidly this way, and have quick access to all the other hotkeys as well.

I know a lot of people say that the mouse is the best way to move the camera, but, my "handicap" aside, I have plenty to do with my mouse without having to control the camera with it too. It's just my play-style I guess. I'll admit, I might not ever get to be a Pro player, or even a Diamond player using WASD, but I'll sure as hell not get there moving with the mouse either. And I'm not delusional enough to believe that I'll ever have a career as a Pro Starcraft player anyway ;-) I just want to play and have fun. And I need WASD to do that.

If Blizzard included a default key-bind setup that used WASD to move the camera, I would be very happy - because with custom hotkeys, I'll only ever be able to play on MY computer. No tournaments, no playing at a friend's house, etc...

I know this is crass, but have you tried brining your mouse to the edge of the screen? It's more effective to use keys to pick units and the mouse to control camera/their movements.

I know after 10 years of playing a game one way it is hard, I was a FPS player since Wolf3d. do you know that transitioning to WASD was a horrible pain for me, for about 1 month. I can't play arrow keys anymore...

I know it sucks, but I'd reccomend trying...it really is worth it, you'll find yourself able to do so much more, and frankly that makes the game more enjoyable.

Just my 2 copper, I think customizable hotkeys is not a bad idea, and I hope at some point you can play that way if you can't get used to playing it this way.

what are you guys talking about, how on earth can you play an RTS using the keyboard to move. This is just baffling. Learn how to move with the mouse and I bet you jump at least a league overnight.

Yeah, I've tried it, and I still do use the mouse to move somewhat while I'm playing. I have increased the mouse scroll speed and that helped too. But I don't know if I'll ever be able to use the mouse only to scroll. I feel like I have so much more control over the camera with the keys.

To me, it's like trying to play a FPS with the analog sticks on a console controller. I can get good at it, and I have gotten good at it, but I'll never be better at it than using a mouse/keyboard. When playing a FPS, I have to have a mouse and keyboard if I plan to have any proficiency in the game (without practicing 10 hours a day like I mentioned previously.) And even if I got to be a GOD with the analog sticks....I'd be a GOD+1 with the mouse/keyboard.

Thank you for the friendly advice though! :-)

EDIT: I'm not, in any way, trying to argue that using the keyboard to move the camera is better, or even as good, as using the mouse.

Moving the camera with your mouse is a perfectly acceptable thing to do in games where micro plays a minor role.

In cases like that I just hit my group hotkey twice for whoever i need to control, centers camera on em. Mouse scroll is just for general movment, Minimap to set targets like for scouting and quick hops, and hot key double taps if i need to focus on a control group.

That's how I manipulate camera.

/signed. it would be much easier for pressing other hotkeys too. its hard to go from the arrows all the way across to pressing W or Q or something.

If you are moving your camera with the arrow keys, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. Start learning how to use hotkeys and your mouse. You can click on the minimap and use a higher mouse scroll level than default.

I was amazed when I found out you could not customize hot keys

Edit:
The problem with moving the screen by putting the cursor to the edge of the screen: To make this worth while you have to increase the screen edge scroll speed way up, but if you do this and accidentally get your cursor to the edge of the screen when you are selecting units or trying to attack a specific unit it will jump your focus a good distance when you didn't intend to and you're out of the action. It sucks.

I (and probably others) turn screen edge scrolling down to a minimum and key scrolling up. Use key scrolling for micro management and for big intended jumps use the minimap/space bar/backspace.

My mouse is moving around my screen too much to get accidental movement if it gets to close to an edge.
