Topic Temporary fix for FPS issues
Raj
I was able to get reasonable (30-60) FPS with mid-to-high settings by doing the following:

- Reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install DVD
- Installing the 10.6.3 combo update (**NOT** 10.6.4)
- Adding "shadows=0" in the /Documents/Blizzard/Starcraft II/Variables.txt file

10.6.4 has some known OpenGL issues, so reverting back to 10.6.3 is a huge boost by itself. On top of that, SC2 shadows currently seem to have a rather ridiculous performance cost for something that most people probably barely notice, but can only be turned off manually by adding that line in the variables file. You'll also have to re-edit the Variables file every time you change your graphics settings, or else the game will automatically turn them back on again.

Hopefully Apple and Blizzard will both put out patches/updates soon that will fix the problems. But in the meantime, my SC2 is running as smooth as it should be, and that makes me a happy panda.

good idea sir, I've had some success with resetting my SMC, having the same improvements as 10.6.3 speeds.

umm, shadows=0 already exists in my variables.txt file.....

Seems like reinstalling Snow Leopard a big of work and not sure if I want to do that. Checked the variables file, mind says zero too. I still have to play in sharder to low settings.

Shadows off with 10.6.4 didn't result in the game being any faster for me, either. But downgrading to 10.6.3 sped up the game considerably all by itself, and then turning shadows off on top of that put me consistently in the 50-60 fps range (mid-to-high settings), only rarely dropping down around 30 (big battles).

With 10.6.4, the game was incredibly jerky, even when the frame rate was supposedly over 30, and things really just didn't look as nice as I thought they should.

10.6.4 really did cause some serious OpenGL issues - Nvidea, Blizzard, and several other companies made posts/announcements about the issues within a week of it being released, but I didn't really notice it until now. Until 10.6.5 gets here (assuming that even fixes the graphics issues, something that is notoriously at the end of Apple's to-do list), it's either play with terrible settings or downgrade to 10.6.3.

For me, it was less of a hassle to toss in the Snow Leopard DVD and re-install with the default setting/update only to 10.6.3, than it was to try and deal with the game's unplayable state on 10.6.4. It takes like 45 minutes to reinstall (go eat or take a shower or something), and another 10 mins to update to 10.6.3, but I've been playing SC2 for hours and hours and hours.

Isn't there any risks of losing data and configuration with this procedure?

I'm really considering downgrading to 10.6.3 now as I don't believe in a real fix coming anytime soon.

No real risk unless your hard drive is already failing. I've had no issues after downgrading to 10.6.3 and the game runs just fine.

Did you reinstall it over factory defaults or did you have a partition set up just for the OS? Because as far as I know The “Macintosh HD” stores everything in a single partition (both OS and files).

Maybe I'm worrying too much but you never know…

UPDATE: I rolled back to 10.6.3 and got it working now. I'm good to go!
