On your question regarding time stopping at absolute zero. I've heard that all molecules would stop moving at absolute zero, but as far as I understand physics, time would keep going normally. I've read of gravity and high velocity slowing time, but not temperature or its lack.
Materials tend to shrink as they get colder and expand as they heat up, especially gases. Temperature is essentially molecular motion: atoms wiggling in place as a solid or bouncing around randomly as a gas. Gas volume correlates quite well with absolute temperature - at least until they liquify or freeze solid. Once solid, they'll contract slightly, but won't shrink to zero volume.
You'll need to ask an actual chemist for a better explanation.
