Walkthrough Brutal NUR (No Upgrades Run)

Hi. A few weeks ago, seeing that when some players were asking about some ways to beat a mission, the answers that they were receiving were the use of units or upgrades that they might didn't get already, I decided to create a walkthrough of the campaign in brutal following these rules:
    • Don't spend the credits earned between missions.
    • Don't use research points between missions.
    • Don't use units that might not be available when a mission is started.

EDIT: I have made it in english now!

Basic macro and micro mechanics used along the campaign:

I just fought tooth and nail through the campaign on Brutal trying to make the most of every credit and research point.

Sounds daunting.

Actually... It's not a big deal once you find out the right unit composition and the way to beat the level. The only mission that requires lots of skill is All in (Air), and maybe you can add to it the micro intensive levels, such as Piercing the Shroud, or belly of the beast.
For example, Supernova was really dificult until I found out that I had to add some tanks, or Engine of destruction until I switch from wraiths to marines and medics. Then they turned very easy.
That's the aim of the walktrhough: To show that every level can be beaten with any upgrade. You can watch the strat that I use, and add your upgrades to make the missions easier.

the real question is can you beat every single mission while building nothing but marines and medics, probably not all in actually, you sorta need tanks there

I just watched the Engine of Destruction walk through and it impressed me.

To get through that one on brutal, I cheesed and trapped the Odin for a while, using the time to expand, push back the advances, and use the wraiths to snipe.

I just couldn't get through it without blocking the Odin to buy time.

Hearing the single player characters speak in Spanish is somehow really amusing, mostly because of how the voice actors use very different tones than the English ones I'm familiar with. For good cultural reasons I'm sure, you'll usually need a different tone to convey the same sort of character to different cultures. It's always amusing to come across any kind of familiar movie or show that's dubbed into any different language.

I don't like spanish voices. Dubbing from their original language makes some things lose sense. But when I bought the game, the servers were still separated, so I couldn't pick english. Now, to get it, I have to download and install all again, and it doesn't worth.

Another way to do it is to just survive until he clears out the second base then expand. It works best if you kept on making SCV's to the point of having about 40 of them. Expand and make a bunker up there. You can pump out more and more wraiths or vikings if you have them. Tech reactors help out a lot here.

Thanks Xombie, I will try this. I want to go through another Brutal playthrough from scratch. I will try a few of Cacho's moves in the vids above as well. :)

Haven't watched these, but did have a question- can you back in the archives and if you've unlocked all the units- could you use BC's on The Evacuation if you wanted? Or is your choice limited to what is unlocked on that mission?

Whatever you unlocked is set in stone. You cannot go back to a previous mission after you beat it and expect future upgrades. When you use the archives, you are replaying it as you did. The only way you can play an early mission with most of whatever units you want is to put them off and wait.

For example, I put off the Colonist missions till I had battle cruisers and every tech unlocked except Hellions and vikings cuz those missions only happen after the evacuation. But once you beat a mission, the tech you have is set for when you replay it.

Theres a couple missions where by the way the new units are introduced you *have* to use them, however, of the missions Ive done on brutal (I really need to finish) Every victory Ive had was doing mainly marines / medivacs with the odd tank thrown in for lol's.

Somebody already tried a NUR by making only marines (it's in youtube), but he couldn't finish All in yet.
You should take a look at it.

PD: 2 moar videos and It's done. I hope you find the walktrough useful.

I'm glad someone has done this. It always bothers me when people say Mission X is so easy, just use Unit A or Tech B - sure Tech Reactors might help on Supernova, but it means you had to side with Selendis on Haven's Fall or do Engine of Destruction without banshees. I had been thinking of doing a no upgrade run myself for exactly this reason, but I was thinking of doing it on hard because I thought it would be impossible on brutal. Shows what I know, well done Cacho. (I'm still going to do a NUR, but I won't be recording it unless someone asks.)

I haven't watched all of these yet, but I was wondering, did you make sure not to get more in-mission upgrades than might be available? For example, level 2 upgrades are unlocked after 10 missions and Safe Haven/Haven's Fall can be done as early as mission 8, so some people will be trying to do this with only level 1 weapon and armor upgrades.

I didn't put that rule, but I don't think that taking those upgrades or not doing it would change heavily the strategies used around the walktrough. I just believe that the missions would last longer

People certainly enjoy the campaign a lot more than I do. I was glad to get my Sarah portrait and be done with it. =s

Lol I wish I had known I could block him. I was raging pretty hard during that mission on brutal because he was going so god damn fast. Slow the hell down, Tychus! I love how the computer AI focus fires your SCVs while while Tychus wastes time hunting down single marines as a siege tank is blowing him to bits.
