The shredder needs to come back. It is awesome and gives Terran a unique method of area control, filling the void left by the removal of starcraft 1 spider mines. However, it was scrapped because when used offensively it would wipe out armies and mineral lines, or force players to evacuate their own base. The solution: take away the shredder's mobility, and do so by making it a structure. If it requires at least a barracks and 45 seconds or longer to build and then remains immobile until it is destroyed, these could be excellent. Also, the warhound or whatever replaces it could possibly drop one or two total as an alternative. Sorry for the wall of text I'm on my phone and it can not make paragraphs.
Since it wouldn't cost supply, you'd have to increase it's cost some, but otherwise I like it.
Not sure if Bliz will buy it, but it would definately cement Terran as the defensive race.
And it should replace the sensor tower, otherwise having 4 different defense structures is too much. Besides, Terrans have scan.
I agree with everything you said, engineer and it may require even further balancing. If it piles every second for 5 damage then ens game when you could have a lot it will only do 0 to 2 damage once armor is plus three. If this is necessary that would be fine but I hate to see this unit removed altogether
possible nerfs to shredder turrets:
(note: i'm assuming that shredder towers could not damage or be turned off by structures or
constructing structures, this is not true for the workers structures)
1. only range 5.5 (could be upgratrying to build ded to 6.5 w/ high-sec tracking upgrade),
making it very weak against early stalkers, marauders, banshees, etc.
2. later tech (but not too late)
3. crawler towers in the process of burrowing could be invulnerable to shredder turrets
4. unable to damage burrowed units
things bunkers would still be good for (as opposed to shredder turrets):
1. strengthening walls (lower cost/HP, infantry can get past wall through the bunker)
2. defending WITH your army
3. not being turn off by rallied units passing by
4. temporary defense/wall (salvageable, units inside still usable)
5. bunker rushes (can attack structures, could be available earlier, salvagable for not all-in
(problems w/ Shredder turret rushes: could be counted by Protoss w/ Stalkers (if shredder turrets had 5.5 range), by Terrans w/ Marauders, Zerg w/ a Spine Crawler, moved to right next to the Shredder turret, forcing the turret to turn off if the support units want to attack the crawler, or forcing the army to get to the side of the spine, or Zerg could try to run Zerglings to the other side while units are by the tower)
things Shredder towers would be good for:
1. defending against run-bys and DT/ghost infiltrations when rallied units aren't passing by
turret (also would include burrowed unit infiltrations if Shredder turret could damage
2. hinding enemy movement, especially run-by-type units and workers
3. can almost completely shut down a choke-point w/ siege tanks stationed just behind
them, especially if the STs focus units that can out range the Shredder tower
4. most of the defensive uses for the original shredder unit
4. amazing against mutas, but hard to put in effective position, as SCVs turn them off
The Planetary Fortress already takes care of Terran's heavy defense needs.
Terran's biggest problems on the ground are due to flying units. The Thor does a poor job defending against Mutas in general, Vikings are a moderate option against Colossus, and only Vikings can kill other Vikings. Terran would benefit much more from a heavy AA walker than anything else. Add some immobile splash defense, and it has all the bases covered.
I'm not saying that this is what the Terrans need, it was Blizzard's idea that they need it in the first place, we're just trying to help fix what they created.

LOVE THIS IDEA!!!! Shredder+tanks=Amazing. Nobody uses planetary fortress except on expansions because it is so expensive and if they get that far into your primary base, you are dead anyway, even if you defeat that wave. Bunkers aren't that good late game unless you have at least 3 full of Marauders. Also, it would be nice to make the sensor tower/shredder tower a detector...
