OK, I got SC2 day 1 but haven't had much time to play due to RL issues at the moment. I like to play zerg but at the moment it is hard to adjust to the game (only played a few RTS befor). If I would play Terran to learn micro/macro would it be easy to switch back to zerg or would it be like learning the game over again?
Thanks in advance to any help. |

Going from terran to zerg will be hard, because zerg is the hardest race right now, I suggest you start with zerg, and get placed in a lower division for practice. You will find terran a lot easier afterwards

This is an interesting question and you'll get a variety of answers from people. I would say the easiest race to learn at the start is terran given that the single-player campaign gives you all the tools you need to begin learning it from the ground floor. The Challenge Missions also give you a chance to start seeing counter and counter-point units and how to use them. From my viewpoint (and as you say, you're still "new" to RTS) you may be better off starting there and getting a feel for the pace of the game and the types of units that you will be able to play (with some exceptions from the single-player campaign). Once you have a better feel for the pace of the game and feel comfortable with one race, try the next, and so on. |

Ok, I might stick with zerg, I already know it will be hard (4-17)
Do you know any good sites with strategies? I do watch Day9 but right now anything will help. edit* wow a blue, thanks everyone (and future people) I will try a few things out. |

it's easier to play terran at the beginning if you play the campaign which is in itself a huge amount of experience.
Just because it's easier though doesn't mean you should do it. I would try a build order like building drones till you are at 9/10 food then build an overlord build drones till you reach 14/18 food build a spawning pool build an extractor build zerglings and get zergling speed from spawning pool. to answer the question about switching races, it's not that hard just takes some time to learn the hotkeys, and slightly modify your strategy. |

My roommate plays terran, I play zerg. Occasionally, we switch, and I had a much easier time learning T than he did Z. Edit: But I had a much harder time getting used to zerg than he did terran.
I wouldn't say switching is like learning the game over again, but you still have to do just as much research on build orders & strats. The bonus is, you'll already have a pretty good idea about what your opponent is doing (when fighting T or Z anyways). |

It sucks trying to play a new race in a ladder game when your gold +. There should be a practice leage for 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's. This would allow people to learn a new race with out hurtting there standings on the ladder.
Me and my friend lost 6+ games trying to learn new races. |

I find Terran to be the best 'all around' race to learn with. What usually takes some getting used to is the realization that Zerg drones are used up making buildings and you have to build more to replace them while Protoss probes don't have to baby sit the structure like Terran SCV's. Throw in the location requirements to build something (Power Pylon for Protoss and Creep for Zerg) and you'll understand the differences IMO better then you would starting with Protoss or Zerg.

I tried to switch from zerg to random on ladder being ranked gold ranked 1... well now i'm 29th..... so i agree |

For your first 50 games in the practice league, etc; Play random, you will learn more about this game that way then anything else. you need to know how all the races work because even if your not playing it, your fighting it and having an understanding of their units, build orders and mechanics is probably the single most valuable thing in the entire game. Plus, random race selection will throw a lot of newer players off at the begining because they don't know how to scout properly and they won't know what sort of build to start with.

Here's my advice:
Try all three races, and see which fits your play style. I found Zerg fit my play style much more than Terran or Protoss, and so after playing random for a while, I made the switch. Also, don't just hop into the ladder. Play 1v1 CPU until you can beat a hard cpu consistently. That should get you started, so you don't just get rolled over in Ladder. Don't listen to this Zerg is harder to play crap. At lower leagues, your ability to macro and your game mechanic's will out weight any perceived imbalances in the races. I suggest watching commentated replay's. The Day[9] Daily is very good (google it). HDstarcraft and Huskystarcraft are ok too. There should be a practice leage for 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's. You can play custom melee games instead of ladder games. |
Here's my advice: lolz i haven't beaten a hard cpu at all and I'm in gold league It might be a good idea to choose a race if you are new because you only have to learn 3 different matchups (zvz, zvt, zvp) instead of 9 (i'm not going to show these possibilties, you're smart you figure it out) |

I wasn't big into RTS before this game either, and had no pre-disposition to one race over the others, so I've chosen to just go Random.
I do find zerg is hardest to play, not talking about it being imbalanced, but simply more difficult to play when you're only around 30 APM, and it's slightly less intuitive than the other two. As I'm playing I just keep track of how well I'm doing in each of the 3 races, and I'm certainly doing best with Terran, so eventually I may switch to Terran only, but I think there's a lot of benefit to playing all 3 initially and not care if you're losing. Even if you don't end up playing two of the races, you'll at least know how to play them, which means you'll know how to fight them. If you can't play all 3, you really can't beat all 3. |

Hey friend. My advice is to play as terran in the single player, do the challenges, and then play custom games in multiplayer against the computer as terran as your race, and random as their race.
After you get a good feel for it, play as protoss vs comps in custom, then as zerg as in custom, then play terran first in multiplayer. If you need any help with anything feel free to message me in-game. My character code is 339, and my name is Grunt. Good luck. |

I wouldn't suggest watching Day[9] for any good Zerg strategies, except for the one on IdrA's opening: http://day9tv.blip.tv/file/3673569/
Maybe I'm wrong and just missed all the good ones for Zerg, but he seems to spend more time trying to discuss mastering the basics and going over other races. |
