Let me know how ur situation is going i am having the same problem with my comp.

New power supply fixed my issue. My computer shut down randomly in game. There was no common reason for the shut down except it was during the game. No other games made my computer shut.

I personally checked everything from drivers, hardware, ram, stress tests, etc. Replaced a few ram sticks, etc. Video card has already been replaced not to long ago too.
I had a 750 watt Thermaltake toughpower. Maybe the 8800GTX was too much for it under load or maybe the psu was just faulty or on its way out.

Regardless it fixed my issue. =)
If anything changes I'll post back up

I have been experiencing this same issue as well with my computer. I have an Alienware, 1Kilo watt PSU and SLI overclocked graphics cards. I was the same way most people are, thinking its my computers problem...so I called Alienware last night. Was on the phone for 2 hours doing stress tests on both my CPUs, all the while checking my termperatures.

My comp is liquid cooled and not once did it get overheated or even come close. Once I said...hey I play Starcraft, a known issue then arised. Basically I was told that Starcraft and Blizzard have a problem that is affecting all sorts of video cards. It's not just a certain series of graphics cards or brand. I was told that Blizzard is working with Nvidia and ATI to fix this issue with an upcoming patch.

So, from what I've been told, it's not my computer issue, my computer is perfectly fine, as I'm sure most of yours are too. Wait to hear from Blizzard on this issue and for it to be fixed in an upcoming patch.

I wouldn't think it'll overheat at 45°C, although into the 50s perhaps it could. When mine overheats and restarts it's usually from 52-58°C, though sometimes higher. It depends on how fast it restarts and gets into the BIOS, since the CPU cools down in the time between the crash and accessing the temps.

Not to sound cynical, but in the tech support world there's a lot of "try these several things and hopefully we get an answer, but if we don't get an answer then it must be something on someone else's end."

Did they give any specifics of the "issue" Blizzard has with Nvidia and ATI cards? I mean, those two card manufacturers dominate the market for GPUs, so it seems if Blizzard as a whole had issues with those chipset makers then we'd experience a lot more problems and a lot more people would be posting here.

The tech support world is very pass-the-buckish since there's so many variables with each computer. The response you got from Alienware sounds pretty much in line with that trend.

Hmm my last reply didn't work. My computer is still shutting down after applying new sound drivers. For those of you that have computers rebooting or crashing, I am not having that problem. My computer literally turns off after sitting in the battle.net menus for 5-10 minutes. It never turns off in game, though will die during game loading. Overheating is a possibility, but it's not a normal overheat crash. I usually get a warning about the computer shutting off due to overheating. Also, why would it be shutting down for over heating when the temp in the menus is lower than cpu temp while playing?

My comp is doing this too, shuts down to black screen in the middle of the game with sounds playing in the background. My video card is supported and comp is up to specs. When I first bought the game I had no problems at all, I was happily playing until about 10 days ago (right after the last patch). Then it started doing this in the middle of games. So I updated the video drivers from windows update, which didn't fix it. I went to Nvidia's site and downloaded the latest drivers there and installed those, which didn't fix it. Ran the repair utility for SC2 and this didn't work. Saw a post about an overheating GPU issue with Beta and figured I'd check it out. Downloaded Nvidia's monitor utility and found that my GPU is getting up to maximum temperature, overheating and shutting down the computer to protect the chip. Placed frameratecap=60 into my Variables.txt file and this didn't help either - the post I mentioned previously said this might help. GPU is still running way too hot when playing the game, but I don't let it get to the point of overheating, just testing the fixes. As of right now, I can't play the game because of this. I did start a support issue with tech support though and included a system error message from Windows that specifically mentioned a video card issue - in my case its overheating.

And just to add after reading ThaLunatik's post above - a GPU shouldn't shutdown in the 50-60 C range unless you specifically set the card to do so. Nvidia's chips restart a machine after reaching 105 C by default.

gpu overheating, didn't look into that. I still don't understand why it only opens in the bnet menus though.

My first guess would be PSU if the GPU tempuratures are normal. Not because you don't have enough power, its just that something is probably worng with the PSU.

I am going to bump this because this is still occurring, and is now happening in game as well as idling in the menu.

Sorry about this major Necro, but this is happening to me as well. As I am playing in a game, all the lights on the computer all light up, everything stops, and the computer just shuts down completely. I think it COULD be that the graphics settings are higher than the recommended settings... the computer runs quite fast still, but I think the problem began after. Oh well, I'll give it a try.

Never had a problem running the game on extreme from the very first day the game came out, now all of sudden after the latest patch the game just reboots as i log in, while idle or loading campaign. Already updated the video sound and repaired the game, but no luck.

If you're having this issue, check to see if you're overheating: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

But in general you should create a new thread if you have an issue like this, not bump year-old ones.

Be sure to also include your Dxdiag if you do:

Press the Windows Key + R, Type Dxdiag and hit Enter/OK, Click Save All Information and Save the file to your desktop.

FrozenFire, have you watched your temperatures in game? Hit Ctrl + Alt + F, and the temps should show up in the top left corner of the screen.

I had this same issue. I opened up the tower and removed the fan from on top of the processor, scraped a thick layer of caked-on dust off of the processor. Works fine now.

I've been having this problem for a few days. I reinstalled Wings of Liberty in preparation for Heart of the Swarm but I can't even finish a single match in the campaign or online because my computer keeps shutting down. I just gave my machine's interior a thorough cleaning and the internal temp doesn't go above 37c, but I still can't play the game. As a result I've yet to get HoTS, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice.

this issue has recently popped up for me. once in a while, right after i launch SC2 and log in and try to click on matchmaking or my friends list, it will power my PC down for a few moments and it will turn itself back on and boot up. it just happened now, after the new patch, only this time, win7 prompted to check the disks and it found some errors and corrected them. here is my dxdiag report
