If you are planning on doing Outbreak, particularly if you want the achievements, having reapers is muy useful.

Hellions actually suck in the Outbreak mission. They do alright against the swarm of infested but not so much against buildings. With reapers, you get fast marines that do +damage against light and throw bombs against buildings. Perfect for this mission. With some medical support, you can take out most anything with 20+ reapers at night.

Reapers also have cooler lines in my opinion.

Get the Reapers first, you'll want them for Outbreak and you need not ever build a Hellion.

A few Hellions to help with base defense isn't a bad idea, especially since they don't use gas. They are actually pretty good against the Infested, but Reapers are so much better against the buildings that there really isn't any question which way to go .

Here's a link to a video I made of Outbreak in case you're interested:

Reapers will help Outbreak a HUGE amount, especially with the attack upgrade (if it's worth the cash for the 1 or 2 missions you use them.)

Hellions are essentially useless in The Devil's Playground, but vikings (which you get the third mission of that line, although you need 2 missions between the second and third unless you do it really late) are moderately useful due to their ability to kill mutalisks and sort of keep up with reapers. Overall, still probably better to get reapers first, but if The Devil's Playground is giving you a really hard time you might want to get vikings first (well, unless you feel like doing Engine of Destruction; all the reasons said for vikings apply to wraiths, and perhaps more so due to a better speed).

Reapers first for sure.
I found a great combo in using Reapers and a few Hellions together. They not only plow through areas , but they both move very fast. The Reapers take down the buildings fast and the Hellions mop up the 'destroyed building' broodlings fast without much need for healing.

Yeah, do the Reaper mission first. Hellions are garbage for that mission. For the Outbreak mission, Reapers are useful because they use gas and take less minerals than Hellions, but I always mass both.

Agreed reapers first. Hellions won't help you.... in any mission.

I sort of disagree. Not that I'm saying you should definitely do Hellions first, but rather that it doesn't matter too much.

Hellions arent particularly good in the campaign, but aside from Redstone.... neither are reapers.

Sure, because of the hordes of light units in Outbreak, you could build reapers and they could be useful. But this mission is not hard at all to complete with pure Marine/Medic. So if you want the added boost from Reapers, go for it. If you want to do Outbreak first, thats fine too.

Regardless of order, I would not invest any credits on upgrading Reapers (or hellions) unless you are going for the achievement where you have to.

for this reapers r the way 2 go. Hellions are pretty useless at everything even outside of the campaign.i guess u could harass xpo workers with them but if yur gunna go 4 major econ fall might as well go zerg and cheese mutas.or reapers 4 early econ.

thats not true I keep a Helion kill squad around In Welcome to the jungle. They can zip in Kill a probe and outrun its escort (who will give up the chase and fly back to HQ)

...That's actually a good idea. I should try that.
