This is a very quick tech demo I was working on. This was done from idea to this in a little less than two hours of "work" time. I do have a game idea ready for this, but this just shows off how the terrain will work.

I have to say, this is a really unique idea for a custom map.
However, would the units on an island be lost, or would the island eventually reappear? |
|
The units on the island are gone. Basically its taking place in a vortex of sorts, the rift gens are keeping the islands floating within, when its destroyed, it falls out of the vortex and explodes. However it could be scripted to reappear after X amount of time.
and thanks for your comment =D |

I don't know what you have planned for actual map that would use this, but do you think making the island actually appear in a separate plane of existence (a separate section of the map technically) with different objectives in the coexisting plane would work? Some kind of interface for switching views over to the other plane could be made fairly easy by having a button that switches the camera bounds between the two sections of the map.
You could make it a strategic choice to alternate an island you have control over to the other plane and complete a competitive objective there. This is all just suggestion, I have no clue what you're planning. |

its going to be a ... very odd map, wont be a normal base map like it looks now, that was all there just to show that its not all scripted in place, (hints SCVs in different places and built a new building and they still fell)
THough what you said is a good idea all in itself and could be done, simply by putting all of the base in a unit group, then when you switch, placing them in the same pos relative to the other base. |

Wow that's really cool. No idea how you made it though.

Ya, I'd have to agree that having destructible islands in a league map could be really interesting.
I could see a normal map smiler to scrap station, but all the High yield areas are on destructible islands. Even have it setup so a destructible island could have about 2 bases worth of High yield, but no real room to build much in the way of defenses so that it would need an army to guard it or it could be easy pray to the opponents attacks. |

Extremely cool idea. Though for it to work in a real custom multiplayer match you would have to give each beacon more HP and ARMOR. Alot.

Sweet. But wouldn't the Terran have an advantage? Liftoff right? But overall an excellent idea. Looking forward to see what else you do with it. It definitely has potential. :D

Fast-regenerating shields. So you need to hit it hard and fast to take it down, as neutral buildings can't be fixed.
Also, there's no method for moving units around by land, so maybe some kind of teleport bridges? Terran have an advantage here because of liftoff. Maybe instead of having resources on the destructible islands, have a neutral building that gives resources to its controlling player, like a C&C Tib Spike? |
|
I think having destructable things like an island is a great idea too.
Almost like an island a bridge maybe could be destroyed and Siege tanks fall into a lake but marines can swim to shore. As opposed to destroying rocks to clear a bridge the bridge starts clear and crossable but cannot be crossed after being destroyed. |
