StarCraft® II

Getting tired of being stuck.

Okay I cannot beat this damn campaign on Brutal. I suck at microing and form what I see, Microing seems to be important on brutal.

So new plan. I plan to do the campaign again on Casual, getting all the unlocks possible before doing a level i have been having trouble with and opt to play other levels as much as I can to unlock more tech for certain levels.

the reason i have decided to do this is because watching playthroughs some people have tech i do not yet have at further levels. So i am curious as to how they got it before me when i am further along.

any suggestions on which order i should to the missions in?

Just get tanks as soon as you can. Once you get tanks, you can beat just about any mission with ease. I usually have those for the Great Train Robbery. Without them, I really cannot beat brutal.

That's fine really, but you get tanks form the dig, which is the one level i am having the most trouble with.

everyone i speak to is confused as to why i have trouble with this level. I think it may just be my control with the drill.

Laser drill is amazing at killing the things that are a threat. Air units, colossi, immortals. Those are your biggies.

Get the Planetary Fortress, this mission is all about defense.

It's unreasonable for most people to even try to play the entire campaign through on Brutal. Play the missions you can handle in one pass, and then go back to a saved file and play some of the others with a different order and upgrades.

Here's an example: Let's say you have trouble with The Great Train Robbery on Brutal. Play the Dig first - on any level - and use Siege tanks for the Trains. Let's say you also have trouble with Welcome to the Jungle. Re-load a saved file and play as many other missions - including the Train thing - on whatever levels so you have the upgrades you want for the Jungle.

It's been too long to come up with really good examples, but you should be able to figure it out. If a mission is too tough, play it on a lower level, figure out what you need in terms of upgrades and units and go back later and play through in the order you need to so you can get that stuff.

its absolutely not unreasonable for most people to play the game on brutal.

I beat it on brutal, and if being on battlenet and the forums has taught me anything, I suck. Really, truly, suck. Awful, I've been told to stop playing the game because thats how bad I am. Clearly my advice is horrible because I barely play 1v1 and when I do I only hit platinum. I mean that's just embarassing. So if I can beat the game on brutal than seriously anybody can do it.

Probably your issue with the Dig is not knowing how to handle the drill. Here's what you do. Firstly, it's important that you hotkey the drill. Secondly you'll look at a bunch of units you want the drill to destroy, say its 2 colossus and 3 archons. Hold shift and click on the targets, the laser drill will attack each unit in sequence.

Beyond that make bunkers and tanks, expand to the left base when you can to get the extra resources.repair when necessary.

On Hard, you can use a flying barracks to get vision and use the drill to blow up the Protoss base.

I found on Brutal the AI just kills them too fast.

If you have vikings, Hel's Angels are really helpful on this map. Otherwise, you'll need goliaths or turrets to deal with the air units. Have 4-5 takes per ramp, maybe more on the north side, since that seems to get hit harder. Get the expansion asap. Put tanks behind 2-3 bunkers and you should be able to hold it If you have orbital command, use the drill to blow up the protoss's factories and nexuses.

Hit the colossi and others as soon as they appear. You don't get 20-30 seconds like in normal or hard to target them. They start moving almost immediately.

You don't even really need to fill the bunkers. Just put 1 or 2 marines inside. The tanks do the most damage. Always have SCVs (or science vessels) around to repair.

If you did all of the Horner missions, Thors soak up damage well and can always be rebuilt if they die.

I found the Great Train Robbery wasn't all that hard on Brutal. You just have to avoid the kill teams and mass diamondbacks and war pigs/marines/medics. I did that one as soon as it was available. And, as always (well, as usually), grab the expansion since diamondbacks are insanely expensive.

How about the second protoss mission? Can't cheese with DTs like in lower difficulties because there's detection everywhere, and if you're slow, Maar because absurdly hard to kill.

I once did come up with an upgrade/research/mission order strategy that allowed me to play through Brutal in a single play though, so it is feasible, but like Diamond Dave said, you dont have to; you can just keep replaying missions in different combos to best set you up for a particular mission. The achievement system doesn't care how you do it, just that it gets done. But as far as the missions mentioned here... things that worked for me:

1)
The one trick to the laser drill that messed me up initially is the proper use of the shift right-click.

Once you have the drill selected, do NOT hold shift for the FIRST right click.... do a 'bare' right-click on the first target. (This pulls the laser drill away from the temple door and onto your first target.) THEN hold shift for the rest of your targets. (That will set the laser drill to kill your targets one after the other.)

The reasoning is that if you hold shift for the FIRST target, the game engine interprets that as a sequential command thus it thinks you want to kill the protoss target AFTER the temple door is finished...

If you can get that down, then every time you see the "!" ping on the minimap, start wasting the protoss attackers in the order described in previous posts.

Also, if you have the Concussion Shell upgrade for marauders (the one that slows enemy movement), putting 1 or 2 in a bunker at each ramp will have a psi disrupter like effect on the attacking ground protoss. That plus the bunker upgrade that increases the ranges of the units inside (Projectile Accelerator) will allow you to slow the protoss down well before they even get to the ramps.

2)
I find that on "A sinister Turn" (2nd protoss mission), the faster you can get the templar archives in the eastern base, the sooner you can use Feedback on Maar which essentially neuters him by negating his one shot kill spell which he starts using after a few reincarnations. I keep just two high templar between the two ramps and every time Maar gets just up to my cannon line, I Feedback him and my cannons wipe him out. No need to even keep a garrison at my main base. So I move everyone to the former eastern base for more economy (which Maar never attacks as long as you don’t lead him there).

3)
I am a fan of siege tanks on Train Robbery. If you can purchase both of Swann's tank upgrades (or at the very least the Maelstrom Rounds) and hire Siege Breakers (mercenaries), the mission is very doable. I put all 4 Breakers on the west most outcropping of my base (where the 1st diamondback was) with a couple SCV for repair. Note: come up with a way to protect them from aerial spotters (personally, I bring vikings to the mission as well). If you can do that, they will seriously damage the escorts and trains on the top 2 tracks AND they will completely WASTE the kill teams because they don’t have high ground vision.

------

The only mission I hate on brutal is welcome to the jungle. I beat it once after countless tries and probably will never try again. Even engine of destruction, which I used to not like, is easy for me now, even without trapping the odin... but not that blasted welcome to the jungle.

Good luck!

I can easily play through the campaign on Brutal, and only Brutal. And I can pretty much do it without needing to pick and choose what missions to do when.

It's more about countering the enemy attacks, and while tanks counter most things easily, there is always another way.

But I've found it easiest to get Firebats ASAP, then Marauders, then Reapers. After that, it's unnecessary to have any specific unit for any map. Other than the ones given for the map you may be doing that is. For instance, Siege Tanks on The Dig.

EDIT: Also, ALWAYS get Mercenaries and make sure you upgrade Medic healing ASAP.

the tick is is build a pack of helions, you see if you kill the probe a run away the escorts will giver up the chase and head back to base. Helions can ice the probe and escape with little damage

That might work on casual or normal, but brutal is a whole new skill level. I normally just massed up marines, medics and goliaths, went in and killed every group that tried to seal an altar. Make sure to bring in 4-6 SCV's for repairs as well. The enemies try and focus on them which means they have to move in closer thus, taking more damage.

This mission is a macro mission. Take the expansion after the third-fourth attempt at them stealing the gas. Make sure you have 2-3 bunkers in place along with a few turrets in your mineral line (About 5) Once you have the base fully loaded, you will have a huge economic boost, you can steam roll past anything.

I actually was able to stop every attempt at them sealing an altar on brutal. I could not get the other achievement which is the one where you cannot lose a worker. ( I lost about 40 or so) Lol.

Assuming you have any air unit or Scan, The Dig is simple. Just kill the protoss bases with the Drill.

Dang it I was excited for this! But I tried and the probe escorts did give chase, from across the whole map even. I'd kill the probe and retreat immediately. The Hellions would arrive home and 5-15 seconds later the escort would show up at my base. So I had to fight them and lose units the same as if I had attacked at the geysers. :( Once even, the timing was just right where the scripted attack on my base arrived at the same time as a geyser escort arrived... I got smoked by the 6 scouts, 6 void rays, 5 colossi, 4 stalkers and.... oh yeah a high templar. It was a serving like no other! Haha

Bro just get medics with improved healing and marines with stim packs. Make about 10 medics and as many marines as you can. Then just walk around and destroy everything in your path.

Well first get siege tank, then set up a grid of bunkers (with War Pgs) Goliaths and siege tanks. They will blast away any chasers.
