Opinions About a Video Game Store

My friend is going to be building a shopping plaza soon and one of the stores he's opening is going to be a video game retailer that also has a LAN party area and tournaments, etc.
So we were wondering what sorts of features and services gamers would be interested in.

How would you like to see it differ from something like GameStop? What sort of setup would you like to see for console gaming, to be able to come by yourself or with friends to play?
How about for the computer area?

I think there should be at least a few separate areas for different genres, e.g. RTS, FPS, MMO, and then have consolidated setups for team play and tournaments. Something like a 1v1-4v4 setup for SC2 with a large spectator screen and stuff.

I'd love to hear any ideas and opinions about it. I've always thought something like this would be really awesome to do, and now that I have a friend who's going to do it I want to be able to tell him exactly how to do it right. :-D

Awesome! Some other things you might want to add to make it stand out from other game retailers:

-Have some Arcade/pinball machines
-If people are going to be spending hours on end there you might want a snack bar.(Maybe even a real bar)
-You also left out a huge genre: Fighting games! There is a game store in my area that has biweekly tournaments in Tekken, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, and Smash Brothers.
-Maybe consider some N64 or even older consoles for customers to play.
-I've always had an idea that is kinda like Apples Genius Bar, except the people who work at this one are able to resolve most console and networking issues(maybe even a repair shop in back!)
-It would also be awesome if you sold PC gaming peripherals (Keyboards, mouse, pads)

Cool idea, wonder where to get those...

Snacks are definitely something that will be available.

Ah! Very good point. What would you recommend, like an Xbox setup with some nice fighting sticks? Or some kind of PC-based thing? (not too familiar with the pro setups for fighting games)

That was one of the ideas to help it be a little more unique. Logistically it might be difficult to have a bunch of older systems and keep them in good shape, but it's definitely something that we're going to try.

That is a good idea and it was something we were thinking about. I'm not sure how viable it would be to work on consoles right away(might have to hire a specialist for that) but we'd definitely have computer repairs and offer some tech support.

I think he wants to sell a bunch of PC hardware and peripherals, and even have something like free installation when you purchase a video card if you bring your PC in or whatever.

Thanks for the response! I look forward to hearing more.

I have no opinion about corporate video game chains.

However I do have an opinion about your neighborhood comic book/puzzle game store. I say hosting magic and DnD will definitely get you more actual attendance.
