So in the vein of SC2Mapster, I'd like to start getting some more people into terraining and coming up with some cool concepts and ideas and let you run rampant with them. I'd like to start making a regular feature for the editor forums - that of a Bi-Weekly Terraining exercise.
To start it off here's the first topic: Welcome to the Machine.
Named/themed after one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs, I'd like to start us off with the challenge of making terrain that looks, feels, and almost acts like you're within a living/breathing machine. Through using various doodads, lighting setup/lighting regions, terrain textures, decals, terrain deformation, etc, create a world of the machine!
I'd like to stress that the main concept and reason behind these exercises will be to flex your creative muscles and start thinking outside the norm, and to become a better terrainer overall!
Good luck, and we can't wait to see what you can come up with!
Yo Deletarius, It would be VERY helpful if we could at the very least post links.
As most people would like to post download links (95% of the time dropbox anyways) to the map, as well as 4-10 pictures of their works. So if links would be Enabled this could work, but without them its going to be tough, So I would like to make the suggestion if Links and pictures could be made avaible for the mappers forums, as we will actually need them if focus wants to be brought to the battle.net forums.
that being said Challenge accepted ill see what I can come up with.

If you want to take it to a full-fledged Melee map, then by all means, go right ahead. Otherwise a small section/area would do just fine.
@Coppermantis - Nice job! Just a few notes on this to help your progress.
Firstly, this is a very good start; you've got some texture play, with doodads that match their environment. I'm not sure about the Korhal Platform skybox for this map, considering what you are trying to replicate. It gives off a huge feeling of being out in the open, and not so much inside a machine. try using some floor-based doodads to fill in that(those) area(s). Additionally, try adding more doodads to your cliff walls; they seem very bland and un-detailed (save the few bridge - like doodads on picture 3 (which are great)). Simple things like pipes, omni lights, and cliff models should do the trick.
NOTE - I would recommend that when you get to lighting / lighting regions, try darkening the lower sections a little, and give the whole area a slightly reddish tint. This would simulate a more indoor environment. also, if you decide to do this, flashing lights / lightning sparks / fog / torn plates / etc. could be added to make it seem run-down if that feels right to you.

The Korhal Platform skybox was a conscious descision; I wanted to simulate being inside low-orbit satellite. I did consider using a lava background
so that might look better.
As far as lighting is concerned:
My post on that page has some different lighting concepts that I'm considering, but some of them don't work so well with the lava so I'll take that into consideration. I will use regions for the different rooms as well.

Oh well, stealing sc2mapster's idea...hell it's about time! Though this forum really REALLY needs some improvements.
On the other hand I might try to do something...if I get my comp working again. (yeah cleaning up, doing backup, whole re-install xp to win7...let's hope all of this will help reduce the huge lag i just constantly have with this poor computer, I whish blizz would give away some comp haha)
Oh and the BWTE (sounds like Blizzard Weekly Terraining Exercise) should probably be more explained to the community. I know that the WTE on mapster have short descriptions. Sometimes it leads to something not quite what was asked. Since we're on the official forums and technically all the community passes here (and not only advanced mapmaker) I think the description every weeks should be slightly more accurate, precise. I also think it should be link to the tutorials that blizzard are gathering around the place.
For example, blizzard could focus on finding a couple (or even only 1) good tutorials that would fit together and then elaborate a the BWTE describing what you have to do, maybe an example, and also links to the tutorials. So everyone even the totally new players that never opened the editor could try to do something with the theme, the tutorial and the example. The main post could also be more structured.
Theme: #1 Welcome to the Machine
Description: You have to do something.
Tutorials: One or two links that leads to some tutorials related to the BWTE.
Related things / Focus on: I'm not quite sure how to name it, but what you have to know to make this BWTE, or what is the focus of this BWTE. Is it focussing on lightning, on the cliffs, on the mass doodads, on perspective, etc.
Examples: Give an example. Maybe not at all because people would probably just try to remake the examples, but sometimes it gives ideas to have an example from which to start. It inspires.
I know it's pretty much the same but in paragraphs, but I think it would be great if all of the upcoming BWTE would be more structured. So if you want to find somehting, you don't have to read a paragraph, you just have to read the topic and get the info you want right next to it.

I agree with Fenix, and I like his template. I think we should take as many ideas as possible to improve this forum, and increase the overall popularity of the BWTE's. This would include allowing us to post images in our posts to allow easier viewing of peoples work.
Also, sorry if we may be getting a tad off-topic, Deletarius. For one thing, I believe we should all use this first BWTE as a starting point, and improve upon it as time progresses. Secondly, while I may contribute a piece to some of the exercises, my primary goal here is to aid, and support mappers in their career as terrainers. This would include giving constructive criticism to BWTE contributors, in hopes of refining and honing their mapping skills.
Lastly, to emphasize what I mean to bring to this newborn community through the words of the blue:
