This unit feels very gimmicky in my opinion.
It's like the Vortex, either very good or absolutely awful. And often times completely useless in all MUs, esp Terran.
My issue is Vipers are so late that SH is really the only "New" unit that we have and feels very unbalanced.
The reason this is an issue is because the hydra is still very expensive and situational. Having two major situational units is mid-game is very scary; also considering the Infestor nerf it makes the mid-game that much harder.
While I know Swarm Host + Corrupter is strong vs certain toss builds, it's very weak against everything else.
Anyway enjoyed the beta so far! You guys are doing a great job!!!

No way man, SHs are the flagship unit for HotS, no way they're getting rid of it :)
As for their usefulness, I'm beginning to think they may not necessarily have to be massed to be good. They could be used as an effective base denial tool for after you've razed someone's expansion. Having just a few SHs planted in the vicinity could delay the remaking of that base significantly, as the locusts will constantly take out workers and buildings just coming up, and the opponent has to spend rather significant effort into getting detection then actually finding where the SHs are and taking them out. It won't be nearly as simple as taking out a few lings/roaches trying to block an expo because SHs can attack from quite a distance away.
I strongly feel that the unit leads to all-or-nothing situations, and that it is very hard to justify just a small investment into the unit.
You can find more thoughts on the subject here, where many forum posters have contributed their thoughts:
12 pages in and I still haven't received an ackwnoledgement from a Blue Poster, but I'm gonna keep the thread alive and strong until the necessary design changes are made to the unit.
You can argue that, but I can apply the same argument to any number of high tech aggressions, where if it works, you basically win, and if it fails, you lose hard. SHs are far from a small investment btw. Just because zerg can mass produce stuff doesn't mean none of it is expensive.
If all or nothing is such a problem though, I don't really see any great solution to this other than to make everything like t1, where they're low cost, weak, easily produced and replaced. Any other way and it will be a heavy blow whenever you lose an army like that.
Of course, you could read the thread I linked, where I go into more detail about my thoughts on the unit. You know, the one that was highly rated, temporarily breached the 50,000 character limit, and has 12 pages of good discussion on the topic.
Nah, too much reading.
"Of course, you could read the thread I linked, where I go into more detail about my thoughts on the unit."
Your thoughts are irrelevant. As it stands pros are now dealing with the swarm host without problem to the point that Blizz is gonna have to change it. Right now it's a unit that will pubstomp anything lower than diamond but will be useless against pros. In other words something's gonna get changed. Which is fine by me. I think the whole "lets make all the zerg units endlessly spawn free units to attack with" trend is almost as bull!@#$ as the fact that they can cover a map and have complete vision with creep by the 10-15 minute mark with zero risk to themselves all the while putting on non stop aggression and expanding like noone's business on the back of it.
