I know this was solved a while ago but im not really sure how to defend it.

after the cannon goes down and you get your gate up, what comes next?

1 or 3 gate expand; 6 pool is a viable macro build for Z because of the popularity of FFE

3 Gate Sentry expand is the most common response, or you could cheese them back with Proxy Gates built by your scouting Probe.

I ran practice games of this scenario with a friend of mine about 5 times before a CSL match.

The best thing to do is put your gateway down immediately after the cannon and block their natural base with a pylon. Chronoboost out 2 Zealots and a Stalker and push forward while taking a Nexus.. this will prevent them from droning while you are both expanding. If you control the Stalker correctly, slow lings will never be able to get on top of it, and speed is a LONG ways out off a 6pool into econ opener.

If they take the 3rd instead of the natural, you can do a 4gate Zealot Sentry timing while your expand is coming up.. it's really strong because they can't drone, can't really overrun with Zerglings, and if they take a 3rd hatch they should just die to the pressure or at the very least lose their 3rd. If they take the 3rd hatch and don't take their natural, then their reinforcements will take forever to arrive.. you just need to be aggressive about hitting the timing and forcing him to pull drones off the line.

If they kill the pylon and take the natural without a 3rd base, then no harm done and you play a normal game because they are behind.

So basically it turns into a 1-Gate Expand off of the 2 Zealot/1 Stalker pressure? When would it be safe to get more Gates/tech up? Should the natural still be walled off after all of this, or do we rely on Force Fields?

Yes.

To be honest, zergs lose next to nothing by doing 6-pool. They will hurt your economy regardless, so you are pretty much on equal footing with them. More than that, you don't know if they are going to attack again, if they are if that's a bang ling, roach...mixture of both? you don't know if they want to macro. Basically its tough to say what they are up to. zealot -stalker pressure is there to find out what is up.

You should absolutely wall-off you natural and you will need forcefields if they are attacking you. It is not that hard to defend, but you have to see it coming.

This

a pylon blocking the natural at this point is soooo bad for zerg. The only reason zergs get ahead with 6 pool is due to the ability to be further ahead in expands.

I'd say your biggest advantage here is the ability to deny his third. the longer you deny the third from going down, the more zerg has to go two base all in. and as we all know, zerg 2 base anything is garbage.

like stated above, 3 gate expand.
follow ups can be timing pushes (e.g. 5 gate push) or take thirds with hallucinated pheonix scouting the zerg
