Hunt for the Snowbound Relic

As the scouting team approaches the last location of the probes, one of them was shut down due to some damage, but one was completely shattered.

There was no sign of any native creatures nearby. The resources were sporadic around the base, but they were buried beneath the thick snow.

"We recovered one of the probes. The other has been completely destroyed. Something attacked them," reported the squadron leader back to Telnis.

"Very well then. This sets a back a bit but no matter, return to base. We can dig up the memory bank within the intact probe," Telnis ordered.

"Yes Imperator."

Reaching the command center, I salute the ground commander, Colonel Riggins. "At ease, Colonel. What's the terrain look like around us?" The Colonel, having dropped his salute pulled up an incomplete map of the surrounding area that was being updated as the scouting teams discovered more.

"So far we're the only force in the immediate area, though it isn't hard to see where the base for that new faction is." He zooms in on the only area shot from the air. "Don't know what the tower is for exactly, but the fleet reports that there's a space station being built in orbit, so we theorize that it's an elevator." I nod, looking over the map with interest, noting where the Tal'Darim touched down.

"Have the Tal'Darim made any attempts at hostilities?" The Colonel shakes his head, pointing out a spot on the map, where a team was just moving through for a remap.

"Team reports a destroyed Probe here, though when they passed through earlier, it was just another empty clearing." He looks at me with a hard expression on his face, one that was both cold and worried. "Something doesn't want us here."

"Would it be possible for there to be Dominion/Raider camps around the planet. I was hoping that could be my primary way to gain resources and so I could get a mining/building drone. It will not count towards my total population as it would require an infantry unit to use it. I would have an IC, but Battle.net ate my post with the IC."

OOC: Wouldn't really make sense, as the planet just appeared in the sky. But then again, it also doesn't make sense that the Dominion wouldn't be there, so maybe Jester can control a NPC Dominion fleet/base?

"I was thinking of them having been set up just before everyone had arrived which would mean after the planet arrived."

(Then it looks like your SOL, since you didn't bring any construction units. As for materials: Same drill as Owl, scan and find resources.)

"Show me what is inside the memory core," stated Telnis to a technician.

"Uploading memory core to drive, downloading relevant time stamp within the banks...completed. The video logs are ready to view whenever you wish."

"Start the video," said Telnis.

The video began to play.

OOC: Should Jester reveal what actually happened the video?

The video begins where the Probe first turned on. Most of it was fast-forwarded to the time of the attack. The probe was in the middle of setting a beacon out when something rammed it from behind. The probe turns to see what attacked it, but then the video cuts out with the sound of cracking metal. Even though the video is cut, the audio continues for a few seconds, with the only thing heard behind a buzz before the audio dies as well.

"Zerg?" asked a nearby Zealot.

"Perhaps, but I am more incline to think it is one of the native animals in the area. I don't believe we have confirmation of zerg organisms close by."

"Shall we hunt them down?"

"They hide well in this terrain and we won't be able to flush them out with this weather. Look, the storm is coming back. We'll fortify this base first and await the map the Executor promised before doing anything else."

"And the warp beacons that were just set?"

"Defenses have been constructing and I've ordered more men to head over to those locations. I have more warriors on standby for any further...contingencies."

More rocks began to fall at the entrance of the base.

The ground began to rumble around the base.

As the ground began to shake around the base, the instruments there did a seismic scan. However, creatures had been previously observed to launch burrowing attacks which initially resembled earthquakes, and the memories of these convinced the Archive Ship take the necessary precautions. The patterns of ground movement were unusual for an earthquake, but it was impossible to confirm either way.

Nonetheless, the defensive emplacements swivelled toward the areas of highest activity, their beam cannons ready to fire at a moment's notice. The Shades also took up defensive positions, while the pair of drone hubs emptied their hangars, swarms of attack drones in position to kill any threats that might emerge from the ground.

Around a mineral cluster, the ground began to crack and minerals around the cracks began to fall in. Strangely, as the ground ceases to shake, the cracks in the ground begin fill up with more earth, sealing the crack up..

The grunts from before look at each other before radioing a Stiker to sweep the area above the entrance. The SCVs sent up there to block anymore falling debris hadn't checked in in the last ten mikes anyways. I stood in the command room, reading over the ever expanding map. The Tal'Darim were the only real threat right now, but it seemed that all the camps had a cease fire going until we were all ready to start searching. The Colonel was just coming back in. "SCVs went silent. The men think something targeted them." I chuckle, turning away from the map.

"Probably just some of the local predators. There a Striker inbound to investigate?" He nods. "Then wait for the report from them." The Striker pilot, Marie, was just passing over the entrance to the mountain and saw...

Nothing was there above the mountain, and more rocks were rolling down. As for the SCVs, they were scrapped by rocks, save for one of them, which had icicles sticking out of it.

Marie brought the Striker to a hover, staring in confusion at the SCV. Finally taking her eyes away for a moment, she radios the command center. {Command, this is Zeus 1. Sending visual feed on the missing SCVs.}

{Copy that, Zeus 1.} Facing the view screen, the feed pops up, showing the scrapped SCVs and the one with icicles sticking out of it. I stare at it before shaking my head, disbelief on my face. The Colonel was already barking orders.

"Get more SCVs up there, but only just above the entrance, have them redirect the rocks down to either side of the mountain entrance. Do it now!" At the 'now', the room became a flurry of activity as the orders were relayed and an escort of Four Tyranors sent with the SCVs to play it safe. I left the room, my Spartan escort right behind, and head up the mountain. Those icicles weren't naturally made.

At the Archive Ship's direction, one of th Shades breaks away from the rest of the base and hovers over the anomalous mineral cluster. It watches the strange activity for a moment, before firing a single burst from its dual nose mounted plasma lances at the ground directly beside the mineral patch.

Nothing happens, aside from some snow melting from the plasma.

Nagg and his pack silently scout out the area and the other factions bases, looking for ways to sneak into enemy bases unseen. Their master took special note of the Tal darim and the Reclamation Fleet, they were the most interesting and dangerous of the factions here, the rest could be taken care with ease if her forces made planet fall.

OOC: Jester can you now give me a read of the area between the factions bases and potentially unknown ( to them) passages into da enemy bases??

After a few seconds of nothing happening, the Shade fires into the ground again repeatedly, digging a hole of significant size. A ground penetrating scan is also run simultaneously, looking for anomalies which would have caused the strange activity. Meanwhile, the construction drones continue working, adding to the central tower. One of them also comes to the mineral cluster which the Shade was firing at, picking up some of the mineral shards which had been loosened.
