Terrain Module

Map Properties

The last few settings that we're going to modify before jumping into the game to run around in our map is the Map Properties window. To open the Map Properties window, go to the "Map" menu option at the top of the editor, and select "Map Info..."

The Map Properties window is separated into 5 tabs. Each tab offers different options.

Info

This tab lets you set the options about your map that show up when players are looking at your map on battle.net. You can change the name, author, description, and preview images for your map.

Options

The options tab contains several options, the most notable right now being the Unexplored Areas, or Fog of War, setting. This controls whether areas of the map that you haven't seen are dimmed, or blacked out. Because this is going to be an adventure map, we're going to change the setting from Grey Mask (dimmed) to Black Mask (blacked out).

Bounds

The Bounds tab controls how big or small the map is. If you find that your map has a lot of unused space, or that it needs more space, you may modify it here.

Camera bounds and map bounds control how far you can scroll the camera or move your units, and how far the map terrain itself extends, respectively. Right now, our map is a good size, so we'll leave this alone.

Textures

The Textures tab lets you change what tileset you're using, and lets you swap out textures. We're going to leave our map with the Agria tileset.

Loading Screen

The Loading Screen tab contains controls for editing the image that is displayed while the map is loading. The melee setting will automatically generate a load screen with the map name, and an image corresponding to the planet tileset used on the map. For our purposes, this is fine, so we are going to leave it alone.

We're all set to test out our map now! Before testing the map, make sure to save your map. Press the "Test Document" button on the very right of the editor toolbar to launch StarCraft II and load your map automatically. The button has the letters "SC" and an arrow underneath them.

the second step above to create raised manmade cliff, on the first click, it actually raises an organic cliff, then the second click puts the manmade cliff on top if it. How do I get it to look similar to the pic?

Setup AI script in this order:
"Player - Set player 2 difficulty level to Insane
AI - Set the target for player 2's attack waves to attack any enemies of that player.
AI Advanced - Initialize the AI for player 2
AI - Start the campaign AI for player 2"

I set the "attack waves to attack" out of convenience; I couldn't be bothered checking to see if the AI would actually send units with the base scripting alone.

I haven't figured out how to force the screen to start at the 'Start Location' yet, but you need to create a start location firs. Default hotkey is "P". Second button from the left sets start locations.

When I go into the editor, my terrain is messed up. On my cliffs, the terrain actually rises up to the top of the cliff, so it looks more like a hill than a cliff. But when I go ingame, it is perfect. This makes it really hard to put lights, doors, etc. in the editor. If anyone knows how ti fix it, please help.

When I go to place the decals on the helipad they don't display on the editor, so I have no way of knowing what way there facing or what im placing until i launch starcraft and see in game. Its not a view setting because its the only decal object I cant see, literally everything else in the editor works just fine but this is kind of a big deal as its making decaling my current map a real pain. All the brownie points in the world for the person who can help me fix this.

@yoshfan: I would say that even if you don't know what you're doing, looking at this tutorial, the ramp should take at most half an hour and five minutes or less for someone who is relatively comfortable with the terrain tools. I don't know how you could conceive that it would take 5 hours to make just that ramp.

@InfJrac: In the "Tools" section in the toolbar at the top, go to the "Brush" drop down list. At the very bottom, you will see an option that says "Allow Cliff Merging." Check this box, and you should have the same effect displayed in the tutorial here.

For the love of God can someone please tell me how to move pieces of terrain? I accidentally put the middle of my map 4 squares lower than it should be, and i cannot find no matter how hard i try a way to move the middle of my map up. Copying and pasting is not working for some reason, it not only shrinks the whole thing, but it refuses to go in the middle. I'd really appreciate some help it's driving me crazy.

@Wipey: If you go to the Terrain layer, click on the cliff button, the third button from the lift is 'same level cliff', you can drag that brush from your regular terrain and smooth it to that level... when you are done, click raise cliffs, and you can then make a small blot, then clock 'same level cliff' and use that to make bigger areas at the level you want.

@Bruxinth: They're part of the campaign dependency, I believe you can alter it in file - dependencies. Press add dependency, then add the other 2 ones.
