Before the zerg Swarm invaded it, Aiur was a verdant world of pristine oceans, lush jungles, and gleaming cities. Its moderate greenhouse-gas levels and low orbital eccentricity allowed the planet to develop a climate conducive to life. Over the eons, Aiur’s humid rain forests teemed with a variety of species, but by far the planet’s most advanced native life-forms were the protoss.

Aiur witnessed the ebb and flow of protoss history, from the psionic race’s primitive origins to its accelerated evolution at the hands of the mysterious xel’naga. Eventually, due to growing antagonism among the protoss that led to the loss of their primal psychic link, the xel’naga left Aiur. The Departure, as this event was later known, caused protoss society to devolve into the most violent civil war ever recorded in galactic history: the Aeon of Strife. This conflict raged for generations, and during this period Aiur’s greater landmasses were devastated, and many of its lesser life-forms were pushed to the brink of extinction.

Although the xel’naga were gone, evidence of their presence remained on Aiur in the form of vast subterranean caverns and monolithic khaydarin crystals, some of which are present to this day. The eventual discovery of these strange xel’naga relics played a crucial role in ending the protoss’ brutal civil war. According to protoss legend, a mystic by the name of Khas had unearthed a khaydarin artifact, and through it he rediscovered the communal psionic bond that his race had lost prior to the Aeon of Strife.

Armed with this knowledge, Khas revitalized protoss society through the teaching of the Khala, a new theory that called upon the protoss to forgo their old feuds and reunite. As the protoss gradually embraced their ancient psychic link, they were flooded with the thoughts, emotions, and experiences felt by members of their entire race, thus tempering the hate that had fueled the Aeon of Strife.

In the centuries that followed, a golden age dawned on Aiur. Its war-torn continents were healed; its native species flourished; and numerous cities and temples were erected across its surface. The protoss population swelled to billions, and Aiur became the hub of an interstellar empire.

This period of stunning growth ended with the arrival of the Swarm. Intent on assimilating the protoss race, the rapidly mutating zerg eventually launched a full-scale invasion of Aiur. Led by a supreme sentience known as the Overmind, countless zerg overran the planet’s brave defenders and carved swaths of destruction across Aiur’s continents.

In a desperate act to save his people, the valiant former executor Tassadar made the ultimate sacrifice and set his ship, the Gantrithor, on a collision course with the Overmind. Although the resulting explosion annihilated the monstrous zerg entity, Tassadar’s heroic act failed to drive the rampaging zerg from the planet. Aiur was lost: the embattled remnants of protoss society were forced to abandon their revered homeworld. These refugees found sanctuary on the distant planet of Shakuras, homeworld to the dark templar, a group of rogue protoss who had long ago been exiled from Aiur for shunning the Khala.

Aiur has since come under the control of the Swarm’s new leader, the Queen of Blades. Some areas of the planet were left untouched by the invasion, but much of Aiur is now a zerg breeding ground littered with ash, broken war machines, and the remains of the dead. Scattered groups of protoss are rumored to exist on the planet, but their true numbers are unknown. The fate of Aiur’s other life-forms is also a mystery, and a small number of protoss speculate that some of these species have been assimilated by the zerg and mutated into killing machines to serve the Swarm.

For all of Aiur’s long and rich history, the planet is now commonly seen as a stark warning of the Swarm’s destructive power. Although the protoss once considered themselves the most advanced civilization in the galaxy, Aiur’s tragic fate has taught them a valuable lesson: they must be willing to adopt new tactics and allies if they hope to survive the chaotic era that has descended on the Koprulu sector.

I don't know if this is true, i googled protoss planets, and found a website link titled The Survivors of Auir, and there found some lore about what happend after Star Craft:Brood War. it said"The Survivors of Aiur began immediate construction of a massive fleet of ships. They were going to try to prevent a ground invasion by stopping it before it ever reached the surface of Aiur. Within 2 weeks a grand fleet of 500 Carriers, 1000 Scouts, 250 Corsairs, and 50 Arbiters were completed. The Protoss were prepared for the invasion but Kerrigan never came. Each class of ships contained one well known hero who would take command if contact with the others was was lost. Templar Aurioch leads the Venetir Scouts, Templar Khrillian leads the Airun Corsairs, Executor Damiarch leads the Carrier Tempest, and Judicator Assmael leads the Arbiter Serenity. These last few warriors called themselves The Survivors of Aiur.The S.O.A. decided not to wait in fear for Kerrigan to return. They unanimously decided to strike before she did. Should Kerrigan wish to strike the Protoss she would be easily lured out to protect her colonies. The Protoss swept through the galaxy moving from one fallen planet to the next, liberating it. The Zerg resistance was minimal and the Protoss were becoming even more powerful for every planet that they acquired. each planet taken was named after a former Protoss tribe in honor of their service to their people. 33 planets were taken in all during the 4 year period of silence. Each planet taken was re-colonized by the exploring Protoss. 15 of these planets were originally protoss planets and 18 were former Terran planets.The Years have passed and the Protoss have gained tremendous power. New technology has been researched and their readiness for battle has greatly increased. The Protoss population decreased by 75% during the two great wars and over these past 4 years has tripled its former size. The colonies continue to grow in size and wealth. Every planet has part in the great Counsel on Shakuras. The counsel meats inside the mystical monument known only as the Xel'Naga Temple. The ancient power within the temple has been studied tremendously by the Protoss since its first use during the second great war. The same technology used to purge the planet of the vile Zerg scum, can now be identified on the newest Carrier design. A super concentrated beam can now be fired at a planet to wipe it clean of its inhabitants...the Protoss plan a massive assault on the still Zerg infested home world of Char." i don't know if this is true but............ its something to think about.

presenting the backstory of the next expansion: Starcraft 2: Return of Aiur.
So, a couyple of high-end protoss guys, like zeratul, decide, "Hey, we want our f-kin planet back!!". so they meet up with Jim raynor and his buddies and decide to go and take back Aiur after rallying some other toss groups all around korpulu. then, they land on Aiur and soon after, they decide to basically DESTROY THE OVERMIND. well, this kinda pisses Kerrigan off, so she turns on them. Jim, not wanting to lose his GF again, brings the artifact back and steamrolls over her again (Like the "All In' mission at the end of campaign). But now, there are two, alternate forms of Kerrigan. One is a completely returned, pre-Queen of Blades Kerrigan, and the other is a super psycho post-queen of Blades type, kinda like evil twin. Each one of them controls half of the swarm, so the human kerrigan can use a part of the swarm to help Jim while the good Kerrigan returns to help Jim and the Tossies, zerg Kerrigan sacrifices herself to revive the overmind, who calls all zerg to come back to Aiur and kill the Protoss and Raynor's Raiders. Knowing they are gonna lose, Matt (Captain of the Hyperion), decides to do a suicide bomb run straight into the overmind's mouth and blow him up on the inside. Suprisingly, the plan works, and to even greater suprise, human kerrigan doesnt die from the destruction of the overmind. She does, however, lose control of her swarm, but she is no longer a threat to the galaxy. What about Mengsk and the dominion? well, while the zerg left for Aiur, Arcturus took over the rest of the Korpulu sector, which provides the story for the expansion ofter Return of Aiur. Starcraft 2: settling the Score.

@Ragebane: Crap. Is Blizzard really this predictable? Good, well thought out (if a tad cliche) idea, and it sounds like something that might actually happen. Maybe they might put something like this into Legacy of the Void, because Aiur is kind of a big deal. A third expansion in sight? Yes please!

@Ragebane:
A) there is nolonger an overmind (deeead and squishy)
B) Knowing kerrigan, she would never sacrifice herself for the overmind
C) she would pwn everyone
D) Protoss wouldnt even dare to return to Aiur (they beleive that the planet is now corrupted *which it is* and its now a taboo, and life can nolonger exist in there)
