StarCraft® II

These massive, heavily armored combat ships are virtual flying fortresses, built to keep the peace and dominate the space lanes of the Koprulu sector. Bristling laser batteries and thick neosteel armor make these imposing vessels some of the most powerful in Terran space. As such, many commanders use Battlecruisers as their headquarters during extended campaigns. Research has led to the development of alternative weapon and defense upgrades, including the dreaded Yamato Cannon.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Massive, prow-mounted plasma weapon that draws power from the Battlecruiser’s core. The Yamato generates a dense magnetic field to harness a controlled nuclear reaction, turning it into a concentrated energy blast that can destroy almost anything with a few shots. Upon its inception, the Yamato Cannon had to be retrofitted into the existing Dominion fleet of Behemoth-Class Battlecruisers—and some of the older vessels were not upgraded due to costs and limited supply. Today, many newly built Minotaur-Class Battlecruisers are equipped with a Type-V Yamato Cannon.
Battlecruisers are not unlike small, self-contained cities. Housing crews from 4000 – 7000, counting support personnel, these massive behemoths have everything the soldiers need to call it a home away from home. Besides the facilities required by a warship, Battlecruisers boast an assortment of cantinas and rec rooms. When the daily routine sets in, and conflict is not in the troops’ face, the broadcasts from the Universe News Network are omnipresent, itemizing Zerg assimilations and Protoss planet glassings taking place outside the vessel’s thick neosteel hull.
Multiple twin-cannon laser batteries for aerial defense and surface bombardment bristle on the hull of the Battlecruiser. Its air-to-air guns—not as powerful as its air-to-ground ones—are equipped with advanced optics and sensors to deal with fast moving targets. The vessel’s air-to-ground guns make use of electromagnetic coils to increase the potency of their shots. During an engagement with a pirate flagship, the crew of a badly damaged Minotaur-Class Battlecruiser performed a daring roll maneuver to bring the ship’s air-to-ground batteries to bear. The barrage staved off the enemy until the cruiser´s warp drive engaged, allowing it to escape.
The Battlecruiser’s propulsion system allows it to slip into warp space, achieving faster than light travel. Drive failures have catastrophic consequences, such as total loss of ship and crew due to violent implosions. Besides the standard set of safety features, some Battlecruisers have a secondary, short range Warp Drive to reduce wear and tear on the main one. It also serves as backup in emergency situations—like the need to effect a blind jump, which is a very risky endeavor, to retreat from a hot zone. The shorter range reduces the likelihood that vessel and crew will end up stranded for years in a remote location.
Old reactor technology proved insufficient for the Minotaur-Class Battlecruiser, which led to the creation of a cleaner, more efficient fusion reactor. Production of the outdated power sources used in old Behemoth cruisers is slowly being discontinued in favor of new fusion technology, and supreme efforts are being made to retrofit old vessels. To this day, many Battlecruisers belonging to the old ex-Confederate guard still use antiquated reactors—poorly maintained or jury-rigged to yield higher energy outputs—that have a tendency to leak. The new Fusion Reactors do not have this problem.

Flight Manual

  • Capital ship that can attack air and ground targets.
  • This vessel can absorb and dish out large amounts of punishment. Use it to draw enemy fire while your ground troops move in for the kill, or to break into well-defended islands.
  • Use their Yamato Cannon to take out enemy defensive structures or key targets, and clear a path for your smaller units. Six Battlecruisers armed with this weapon can take out a command structure in one shot.
  • Follow them with SCVs set to auto-repair to increase their longevity.
  • Their movement speed is slow, so be sure to either protect them well or field so many that the enemy has no chance of stopping them.
  • When attacking ground units, if terrain allows, position your Battlecruisers above obstacles or cliffs to deny the enemy the chance to retaliate.

Fusion Core Upgrades

  • Weapon Refit: Enables Battlecruisers to use the Yamato Cannon.
  • Behemoth Reactor: Increases the starting energy of Battlecruisers by 25.

Countermeasures

Terran VS
  • Get a sizable force of Vikings and focus fire. Watch out for the enemy’s own anti-air units or ground support.
  • Engage with a very large force of Stimpacked Marines with Medivac support. Focus fire is crucial.
Zerg VS
  • Attack with a large number of Corruptors and focus fire the cruisers.
  • Spawn Hydralisks and research the Grooved Spines upgrade. Try to fight them in the open.
Protoss VS
  • Engage Battlecruisers with Void Rays.
  • Surround the vessels with a very large force of Stalkers with Blink.
  • Use the High Templar Feedback ability to drain energy from a Battlecruiser and deal damage at the same time.
