Colossus

The towering Colossus is a Protoss robot design dating back to the bloody conflicts of the Kalath Intercession. It strides across the battlefield on four tall, slender legs that allow it to cross steep elevations with ease. The Colossus’ heavily armored hull carries two powerful Thermal Lances, with one on each side of its body. The robot’s beam attack cuts a broad swath across its targets, making the Colossus an ideal anti-infantry weapon. Unlike most other Protoss robots, the Colossus was created purely for destruction. Manufacturing Colossi has been outlawed for centuries, but the increasingly desperate war against the Zerg has forced the Protoss to revive the line.

General Strategy

  • Massive armored unit that can attack ground targets.
  • Able to attack from very long range.
  • Devastating to groups of infantry.
  • Cliff Walk allows it to traverse elevations in terrain, like Reapers.
  • It is so massive that it can be engaged by anti-air structures and units.

Upgrades

  • Extended Thermal Lances: Passive increase to the Colossus’s attack range.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Launch Vikings; their long air-to-air range will make it easy to bring the Colossi down.
  • Engage with Banshees.
  • Build Thors and use their 250mm Strike Cannon ability.
VS Zerg
  • Spawn Corruptors or Mutalisks to engage the Colossi safely.
  • Use Infestors to Mind Control the Colossi – preferably after distracting them.
  • Spawn Ultralisks. Their high damage, armor, and health will allow them to survive the Colossi onslaught. Be sure to research Chitinous Plating and Anabolic Synthesis.
VS Protoss
  • Use Void Rays to engage Colossi safely.
  • Focus-fire them with Immortals.
  • Build Carriers or Phoenix fighters.

One of the best feelings as a protoss is watching a few of these lazer lots of marines.

@rocket: one of the best feeling is to see how surprised your opponents are when they see that their colossi is facing a army of mass marauders who just beat the cr@p out of his 15 chargelots.

imagine: you have 50 fully upgraded Mutalisks you attack the opponent with these. Then 25 fully upgraded Colossi appear and start attacking your Mutas they get destroyed in seconds.

reason why no aa: it will be too complicated to make the animations of flaming lazars sweep upward in the sky since the laser will go on forever without the ground to hold it in place.

@Mappy: and that just about nothing could take them out!!!!
and no the lasers would not go on forever! because the only time they would attack is when there are enemy air units close by!

@rocket: If you think this is OP then you should take a good, hard look at Terran. This is the Protoss siege unit; Terran have tanks, Zerg have brood lords. 'Nuff said.

@eGTFitzChiv: terran require 3 seconds to pack up their tanks, making positioning very important. Tanks are also very immobile. Brood lords can fly, but they move extremely slowly and are very costly is resources and time to create. Colossi are very expensive, but dont suffer from positional drawbacks like tanks because they dont get caught up on their own units, and they can retreat over cliffs if they have to. Colossus are very powerful, but they have their drawbacks... I still think their range upgrade is too powerful given their high mobility (for a siege unit), they should have a range of 8 after the upgrade
