Hydralisk

The evolutionary matrix of the caterpillar-like herbivorous Slothien was supercharged by the original Overmind, who twisted the hapless creatures into nightmarish killers known as Hydralisks. Within the plates of their carapaces, Hydralisks house hundreds of armor-piercing spines that can be fired in volleys at enemies approaching from ground or air. The remarkable musculature of the Hydralisk (4,000 muscles compared to a Terran’s 629) can launch a Needle Spine at astounding speeds, easily penetrating 2 centimeters of solid neosteel even at maximum range. Under any circumstances, massed groups of Hydralisks should be approached with extreme caution, and preferably with Siege Tank support.

General Strategy

  • High-damage ranged unit.
  • Able to attack air and ground units.
  • Best paired with other unit types to protect their high damage output from enemies.
  • Can improve attack range with Grooved Spines upgrade.
  • Can burrow with Burrow upgrade.
  • Can improve movement speed off of creep with the Muscular Augments upgrade.
  • Effective at attacking air units when grouped in large numbers.

Evolutions

  • Burrow: Allows the unit to take cover underground, rendering it unable to attack. A burrowed unit is invisible unless revealed by detectors or effects.
  • Grooved Spines: Increases hydralisk range by 1.
  • Muscular Augments: Increases hydralisk movement speed when off of creep.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Use vehicles such as Siege Tanks in Siege Mode to attack Hydralisks from range. Siege Tanks are especially effective when Hydralisks are grouped which can give you the opportunity to eliminate multiple Hydralisks at once.
  • Hellions with upgrades kill Hydralisks quickly. Make sure to approach the Hydralisk pack to maximize on the splash damage.
VS Zerg
  • Swarms of upgraded Zerglings are able to swiftly surround and destroy individual Hydralisks; similarly, Banelings get a significant boost to their detonation damage against Hydralisks.
  • Roaches’ armor and health pools allow them to efficiently defeat Hydralisks.
VS Protoss
  • Use Sentries equipped with the “Guardian Shield” ability to significantly reduce damage to your units when faced with large groups of Hydralisks.
  • The High Templar’s “Psi Storm” ability is extremely effective against stationary Hydralisks.
  • Zealots have the ability to cheaply soak up a large amount of damage from Hydralisks, while dealing a fair amount back. Research Charge to make sure Hydralisks can’t kite.
  • Colossus splash damage also destroys Hydralisk swarms.

Looking mean and tough. But I don't see them around as much as in the first SC... Roaches have got the spotlight, now...

@Philip: I used to not use Roaches, but i tried mass roach in 4v4 last night, and with three bad players on my team i managed to hold off crazy amounts of stalkers and collossi, with a zerg throwing out mass Hydra. The other team was bewildered as i pretty much destroyed wave after wave single handedly (this was on Megaton), but wondered wtf my team was doing :( Still, the roaches worked far better than i ever could have hoped.

@Kevin: I honestly don't find much practical use for motherships unless it's a long game.

If I build one in a game 30 minutes or less, it's usually just as a victory cigar. :)

Wouldn't affect me. Getting hydras is a top priority for me; I don't usually get roaches until after I can put some hydras in the field. Despite them being tier 1, I usually get roaches after I get the tier 2 hydras. You just can't risk having no AA as zerg. Lings can hold the line with hydras until you get roaches, but if you have no hydras and you get hit by an air attack, you're screwed.

zergling/hydra is still a good comination, even if hydras are tier 2. same with roaches, or really anything that can keep the enemy away from the hydras so they can dish out there huge amount of damage. and for those of you complaining about no tier one zerg anti air, let me ask you two things. 1: what happend to queens and spore crawlers. 2: are there any tier one air units other than overlords? no? i didnt think so.

@FiretrUCK: i miss lurkers, being zerg would be so much easier, it could be tier three for all i care, i just want them back, also i loved what it sed about lurkers in the sc1 guide, "they can chew up marines and spit them back out b4 they even knew wat happened"

Hydralisks have always been mah favorite Zerg. It's unfortunate that Lurkers are no longer used, but you can still see them in SC2's 3D-rendered glory since they're still in the game and can be seen in custom maps. Just look around. It looks like a really awesome creature although it barely bears any resemblance to the Hydralisk whereas in Brood War you could tell it was evolved from it.

Why is the Zerg's bread and butter unit tier 2? I would much rather have it back at tier 1.5 with a damage/range nerf. No Zerg AA makes me an unhappy man. :(

I've tried to be more strategic lately, building a combination of units and sometimes I lose because I take too much time doing that. However, when I put everything into just massing hydras (since I'm not the greatest at microing) I actually win about 60-70% of the time. That's also with just macroing them into the enemy base and just watching while I mass spawn another wave.

Hydras still die to lots of things but they are also one of the more powerful med range units. I find these strong against/weak against parts on these pages not totally accurate. For example, it says strong against banshees, but you need a lot of hydralisks to take on banshees and they can cloak. Plus banshees can strafe cliffs to take out the hydralisks. Even so, hydralisks can be quite good, especially in dealing with void rays, but I'm not sure if I would choose them over mutalisks that now come at the same tier. Mind you that hydralisks cost less vespene so that counts.
