Units

Infestor

Infestors are one of the more insidious new additions to the Swarm. They were evolved from the Borbu Matriarch, an unusual creature that is more like an ambulatory nest than a single organism. Unlike most Zerg warriors, Infestors have the ability to move while burrowed. These terrors can spew a volatile plague over their targets with dire effects, and they have been known to ingest Infested Marines, carry them to a combat zone, and regurgitate them to fight for the Swarm. Perhaps the Infestor’s most dangerous feature is the Neural Parasite, a symbiotic creature living within Infestors that, when spat, attaches to an enemy and controls its mind for a short period of time. Seeing the immense potential of this parasite, the Queen of Blades is busy incubating new strains that can live longer outside of their host.

General Strategy

  • Ground support unit.
  • Can burrow with Burrow upgrade.
  • Can move while burrowed, but cannot use Fungal Growth or Neural Parasite while burrowed. Infested Terran can be used while burrowed to launch surprise attacks against enemy workers or structures.
  • Neural Parasite ability allows the Zerg player to steal and use enemy units. This even affects enemy workers, allowing the zerg to build other races’ buildings.
  • The Pathogen Glands upgrade allows Infestors to be spawned with more energy for activating abilities.
  • Effective at stopping fast-moving units by snaring them in place and dealing damage with their Fungal growth ability.

Evolutions

  • Burrow: Allows the unit to take cover underground, rendering it unable to attack. A burrowed unit is invisible unless revealed by detectors or effects.
  • Pathogen Glands: Increases infestor starting energy by 25.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Use Ghosts’ EMP Round ability to drain Infestors’ energy.
  • Detect and destroy Infestors quickly with Ravens using the Seeker Missile upgrade.
  • Use long range weapons such as Siege Tanks to focus-fire Infestors down.
  • Use the Orbital Command upgrade to scan for and reveal burrowed Infestors.
VS Zerg
  • Infestors can be defeated by ranged anti-ground units like Hydralisks and Roaches that can continue attacking while affected by the Fungal Growth ability.
  • Use Overseers to detect Infestors for your army to kill.
  • Bring enemy Infestors under your control by employing your own Infestors with the Neural Parasite upgrade.
VS Protoss
  • The High Templar’s ’Feedback’ ability does immense, instantaneous damage to Infestors.
  • Use siege range weapons such as Colossi to focus-fire Infestors down.

If you get two infestors next to a command center at half health or less they stand next to it and slowly infest the structure...It takes about 60 seconds but the 2 infestors can be destroyed and interupt the process...The infested structure will slowly produce infested marines without a time limit...This should be a feature in heart of the swarm campaign.

@hasaboo: wont work. the cc can just lift off. and where can u find a unprotected cc and attack it to half health without the opponent hearing BASE UNDER ATTACK and fly away before the infestors come. great for campange but not the ladder

Neural parasite is pretty much useless now because of the fact that its range is too small. Infestors always splatter into their death before they get to use the move because the lack of range.

the queen of blades must be a crazy workaholic... how can you be busy incubating new strains for the neural parasite AND make new forms of lings for HotS AND be obsessed with roaches AND control your army at the same time... i wish i was as hardworking as she was...

@FOB: Haha. You could be if you tried. Besides, she has Abathur do the evolution stuff for her. I rather think her fascination over her swarm's hyper-evolution is more of a hobby than a "working project."

Range on Neural parasite is now what, 5 or 6? Any unit worth parasiting can outrange the infestor, and kill it before it can use it. The skill is Absolute garbage now. GARBAGE I SAY!! and infested terrans take too long to hatch.

@MamutsitoZZZ: best if you neural parasite their workers instead while you launch a diversion attack.
i still don't get how they fit a colossi in a nydus worm :)

I think the original previewed infestors were cooler when they infested barracks', the nueral parasite is very hard to use. That's okay though, great unit!

@Aladril: Can't really do this with SCV's, as the SCV has to hang around while building said base. You can, however, Parasite any probe and have it warp you a base. Warping begins instantaneously, and your probe is not used up or distracted with building it. Once the base is warped with a probe under your control, base is permanently yours ^^. Oh, and you could parasite an enemy zerg to have them make you a base too but that would really be a waste of energy.... Unless you were making a MEGA PROXXY HATCH O_____________O

@Ipoverlord: this is also true when zerg player are in need of worker , or building , since the probe sacriface himself in the build . i sugest to warp a nexus first when you try zerglot archievement , since you get probe from nexus , how will build you pylon , gateway and even starport to void rays

Best unit ever! I once had 10 infestors in a 2v2, sneaked them into an enemy expansion, then got a zillion infested terrans and destroyed the expansion in a couple seconds! And even better the entire enemy army came to defend, and I got nearly half the army!
