Units

Overseer

Overseers are genetically altered Overlords who that have a mass of additional sockets filled with highly evolved optical receptors with hypersensitive retinas. These “eyes” have been through much iteration, each developmental cycle improving upon the preceding one’s optical evolution. The Zerg are obsessed with detecting subtler motions and more advanced camouflage techniques, and this latest evolution allows the Overseer to detect any hidden enemy units, including those that are burrowed underground or cloaked. Perhaps most disturbing are reports that Overseers can either carry or give birth to Changelings, infiltrator organisms that can convincingly mimic enemy Zerg, Terrans, or Protoss.

General Strategy

  • Provides the same supply as the Overlord.
  • Mobile detection unit.
  • Can detect cloaked and burrowed units.
  • Very fast movement speed compared to Overlords; ideal for scouting.
  • Can spawn the ’Changeling’ unit in order to infiltrate enemy bases or troop movements.
  • Can contaminate enemy structures, temporarily preventing them from training new units or researching upgrades.

Evolutions

  • Pneumatized Carapace: Increase speed of the overlord by 1.4 and the overseer by 0.875.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
  • Strong anti-air units like Vikings can tear through Overseers extremely quickly.
  • Static air defenses like Missile Turrets (particularly turrets with the Hi-Sec Auto Tracking upgrade) can be an effective deterrent against Overseers.
VS Zerg
  • Queens at your base can take down Overseers, while patrolling groups of Hydralisks deal enough damage to eliminate them before they can learn about your base defenses or production.
  • Because of their speed, Mutalisks can also serve as effective pursuers for groups of Overseers.
VS Protoss
  • Stalkers represent some of your earliest defenses against Overseers. Their blink ability ensures that they’ll be able to intercept and chase down Overseers quickly.
  • Void rays do extra damage to Overseers, so if you have them, use them to make short work of Overseers.

I think Overseers were a good unit to put into Starcraft 2 because every overlord being a detector makes it impossible to nuke the Zerg harass with DT's etc but I don't think getting rid of the Overseer is a good idea it's a balanced unit

With the overseer (and the changeling) gone in HOTS, the Zerg will have no unit solely dedicated to scouting. The Terrans still have the scan and the Protoss have the observer. I do think the changeling is a little OP since if disguise is activated your units will never automatically attack it (even if a detector is near). But I think the Zerg still needs a better scouting option than just using overlords. It would be nice if the zergling could be evolved into a unit (call it scoutling or something) that could move really fast, burrow move (about as fast as a roach) and have an increased sight range when burrowed (compared to other burrowed units). Maybe also give it a hive level research so that it would be able to jump cliffs. Don't know if anyone (in Blizzard) will listen to me since I'm just a bronzie, but I think its a good idea.

I think the Viper evo will be a nice addition in HotS. Never been a huge fan of the overseers... Changelings, however, will be missed. :(

@Cavyking: They are strong against roaches, banshees, and dts. So that means both light and armored units will be %#!!d! If your opponent masses AA and you mass Overseers, yur screwed!

Since everyone seems to think they suck, I will give some useful suggestions on how to use them, other then the obvious.

I will give you guys a tip on how overseer can be useful. When assaulting an enemy base, most of the ramps are at least partially blocked by a building. Contaminate that building closest to the ramp so that the rest of your attacking units will now be able to see up the ramp and hit the enemy units.

Also since all zerg units come from a hatchery, contaminating this often enough and pushing him will wear does his troops or cause him to undersaturate minerals as he attempts to keep up his army.

i hate the overseer i love its abilities but, the protoss have an always clocked observer and the terran have a raven which is 100min and 100gas the overseer cost 50min 100 gas but also add the 100 min from the overlord and it truely cost 150 and not to mention it also cost supply
