Overseers are an evolution of the Overlord, fitted with highly evolved optical receptors that boast hypersensitive retinas. These “eyes” have been through much iteration, each developmental cycle improving upon the preceding one’s optical evolution. The Zerg are obsessed with detecting subtler motions and more advanced camouflage techniques, and this latest evolution allows the Overseer to detect any hidden enemy units, including those that are burrowed underground or cloaked. Perhaps most disturbing are reports that Overseers can either carry or give birth to Changelings, infiltrator organisms that can convincingly mimic enemy Zerg, Terrans, or Protoss.

SPECIMEN ANALYSIS

When the Overlord is subjected to the Overseer strain mutation, its eyes melt into a luminescent substance that floats inside a semi-transparent skull. Sensory tentacles and twin photoreceptors—capable of sight in any environment—sprout from said substance, in between the openings of their thick, armored “faceplate”. To further enhance the creature’s capabilities, the main body expands and grows six new hypersensitive optical receptors in strategic positions—ensuring that not even cloaked threats escape the Overseer.
Evolution is a curious thing. The first batch of Overseers ended up crippled and blind when the arrays of microscopic filaments—relays of sensory and spatial data—located on their vestigial legs gained sentience and became ravenous to the point of consuming the appendages that housed them. To correct this situation, the legs were excised and the filaments were transformed into long, fleshy tendrils grown from the Overseer’s carapace.
By incorporating Terran DNA into the Overseer’s genetic makeup—particularly during its later stages of pupation—the creature displays a peculiar evolution pattern. Its creep glands expand and turn into stores of sentient, unfertilized bio-matter, and its organs no longer liquefy into creep, but instead a nourishing paste. At the Overseer’s will, this paste bonds with the bio-matter in the sacs and quickly becomes an insidious infiltrator known as the Changeling.
The sentient, unfertilized bio-matter that resides within the Overseer grows and solidifies at exponential rates when exposed to foreign atmospheres. The Swarm has capitalized on this trait, using its Overseers to disable critical facilities in the midst of an invasion.

General Strategy

  • Provides the same supply as the Overlord.
  • Mobile detection unit.
  • Can detect cloaked and burrowed units.
  • Very fast movement speed compared to Overlords; ideal for scouting.
  • Can spawn the ’Changeling’ unit in order to infiltrate enemy bases or troop movements.
  • Can contaminate enemy structures, temporarily preventing them from training new units or researching upgrades.

Evolutions

  • Pneumatized Carapace: Increase speed of the Overlord by 1.4 and the Overseer by 0.875.

Countermeasures

Terran VS
  • Strong anti-air units like Vikings can tear through Overseers extremely quickly.
  • Static air defenses like Missile Turrets (particularly turrets with the Hi-Sec Auto Tracking upgrade) can be an effective deterrent against Overseers.
Zerg VS
  • Queens at your base can take down Overseers, while patrolling groups of Hydralisks deal enough damage to eliminate them before they can learn about your base defenses or production.
  • Because of their speed, Mutalisks can also serve as effective pursuers for groups of Overseers.
Protoss VS
  • Stalkers represent some of your earliest defenses against Overseers. Their Blink ability ensures that they’ll be able to intercept and chase down Overseers quickly.
  • Void Rays do extra damage to Overseers, so if you have them, use them to make short work of Overseers.
