StarCraft® II

The Thor project has been shrouded in mystery since its inception. Agents of the Umojan Protectorate were the first to investigate the Dominion’s new terror weapon. Images from this investigation showed a huge bipedal war machine armed with a dorsal artillery battery that wouldn’t be out of place on a battleship. Most disturbing of all was the discovery that this monster could be built rapidly from the ground up by a standard Factory.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Heavy composite neosteel-ceramic armor protects the lumbering Thor. The plates are modular and can be replaced easily if damaged, or exchanged for thicker versions depending on battlefield conditions. Designed to defeat high-explosive armor piercing rounds, as well as disrupt the searing beams of energy-based weapons, the Thor’s plating offers unparalleled protection to the pilot and the mech’s internal systems. Its innermost layer has a heat-resistant kinetic mesh that prevents damage from shrapnel, slugs, or even sheared armor fragments. This siege-walker may not be unstoppable, but it is undoubtedly close.
The guns on the Thor’s back—a replacement for the old strike cannons—fire 250mm anti-aircraft shells fitted with advanced electronics to minimize wasted shots. Their depleted uranium cores allow them to punch through the plating of heavily armored aerial targets, causing serious damage. Each shell is individually chambered by a basic auto-loading mechanism that simplifies maintenance and repairs. The Punisher Cannons’ rate of fire is capped to avoid malfunctions and to extend the service life of the ordnance. Bypassing the limit is not recommended, as the cannons may melt or explode.
The cockpit of the Thor is pressurized and protected by a military-grade Steelglass canopy, as well as thick layers of composite neosteel-ceramic armor. At its center lies the pilot´s seat, which helps prevent operator injuries through powerful inertial dampeners and a foam-padded six-point harness. Multiple gauges and screens monitor the mech’s systems, and the main holographic display projects computer-generated imagery of the terrain. Were this screen to fail, the Steelglass canopy has a fully integrated heads-up-display, a navigation screen, and a basic targeting system even if Thor pilots don’t really need to aim.
Located on both sides of the Steelglass canopy, the Javelin Launchers fire four small, IFF fragmentation warheads that can rip through multiple, lightly armored aerial targets on a single salvo. Due to the missiles’ small size, the Thor can carry a large payload, ensuring it will be fully prepared to deal with groups of flying bogeys even in drawn-out engagements.

Driver’s Handbook

  • Massive armored unit that can attack both air and ground targets.
  • Its main cannons deal heavy damage to all land-based units and structures, while its missile launchers keep enemy air forces at bay, especially Mutalisks.
  • Very vulnerable without support.
  • Slow-moving and costly to produce. Combine with SCVs for field repairs, and Medivacs to ferry them quickly across the battlefield.
  • The thor’s initial anti-air weapon is strong against swarms of light units. Switch into High-Impact Payload mode when going up against small numbers of armored units.

Countermeasures

Terran VS
  • Tanks in Siege Mode with infantry support are a great way to eliminate Thors and their escort.
  • Cloaked Banshees allow you to attack on your terms; try to catch the enemy on the move and beware of Scanner Sweeps.
  • Assemble a large force of Marauders and focus fire. Works best if you research Stimpacks and build a few Medivacs.
Zerg VS
  • For the most part, large groups of smaller units work better against Thors. Try to attack from different directions simultaneously and don’t forget to focus fire.
  • Use Zerglings to support your Roaches or Hydralisks. Be sure to research Metabolic Boost, Tunneling Claws, and Grooved Spines.
  • Infestors can take over a Thor using neural parasite, turning the tide of battle in your favor.
Protoss VS
  • Immortals excel against Thors due to their Hardened Shields and high damage against armored targets.
  • Employ a large force of Zealots and Dark Templars to surround them. Be sure to have the Charge upgrade for your Zealots and to designate a Thor as your target. If you use attack move, your units will charge the escorts.
  • Void rays work well against Thors.
