StarCraft® II

Bearing little resemblance to the docile Brontoliths from which they were evolved, Ultralisks are the most powerful of the Zerg ground forces. They serve as the backbone of the Swarm’s armies and are as dangerous as any armored vehicle. These massive monstrosities are used as living battering rams against their enemies. Their large bone-like scythes allow them to tear through most known substances with ease. The Ultralisk’s genetic material has been subjected to countless tests and experiments, and only the final viable code is used by Zerg Larvae to morph into new Ultralisks.

SPECIMEN ANALYSIS

Preliminary tests on the formidable carapace of the Ultralisk hinted at the bonding of exotic substances. Further research proved that the diamond-shaped, chitinous scales of the creature were combined with foreign compounds and organic tissue multiple times, resulting in very light plates with an unmatched level of hardness.
Kaiser Blades are terrifying to behold, for one swipe is all it takes to bisect walls, neosteel plating, or more exotic materials. The density, bevel, and edges of these organic weapons are honed at the genetic level, and the Swarm has recently found a way to fit four of them on a single Ultralisk.
The genetic code of the hapless Brontoliths has been dissected, rebuilt and repurposed multiple times. Each phase of the process has served to eliminate less desirable traits, as well as augment the creature’s ability to withstand severe punishment. As a finishing touch to the Ultralisk, a masterpiece of DNA manipulation, the Swarm added a gene with the sole purpose of growing heavily armored copies of the beast’s primary organs in random locations of its body.
The first Ultralisks encountered on the field seemed to suffer balance issues, and were easily toppled by artillery fire or loss of limbs. Recent reports of sorties with “unstoppable” Ultralisks have revealed substantial additions to their internal structures: a complex sensory system, an auxiliary nervous system, and specialized muscle fibers that expand or contract in reaction to stimuli. Though these evolutions hint at why a charging Ultralisk can maintain speed with its hind legs severed by a 180mm Crucio shell, they offer very little in the way of new solutions to the Swarm’s deadly siegebreaker.
Brontoliths were born to endure. With no natural weapons other than sheer size and strength, they mostly relied on their armored skin as protection from predators. Open wounds were a common denominator throughout their existence, and viruses, bacteria, and more exotic lifeforms often made their way into the Brontoliths’ bloodstreams. None of these harmful organisms managed to cause any damage, however. The Brontolith’s immune cells latched on to anything foreign and either destroyed or assimilated it. This trait was further enhanced by the Swarm, allowing Ultralisks to thrive in the most toxic or deadly environments the galaxy has to offer.

General Strategy

  • Superior ground-attacking melee unit.
  • Can deliver ’area of effect’ ground attacks against multiple targets.
  • High armor and hit points.
  • Can increase armor with Chitinous Plating upgrade.
  • Can burrow with Burrow upgrade.
  • Massive units such as the Ultralisk have the ability to break Force Fields. Combo this ability with units that are normally weak vs. Force Fields such as Zerglings.
  • Utralisks are immune to stuns and mind control.

Evolutions

  • Burrow: Allows the unit to take cover underground, rendering it unable to attack. A burrowed unit is invisible unless revealed by detectors or effects.
  • Chitinous Plating: +2 bonus to Ultralisk's armor.

Countermeasures

Terran VS
  • Anti-ground air units like Banshees and Battlecruisers can do immense damage to Ultralisks while completely avoiding their attacks.
  • Spreading out ground infantry units can help minimize damage from Ultralisks’ “cleave” attacks
  • Anti-armored ground units like Marauders can also crack through Ultralisks’ reinforced carapaces as long as they can keep the Ultralisk at range by kiting it with Stimpack’s movement speed increase.
  • Tanks in Siege Mode can make short work of Ultralisks, while the splash damage of their shots annihilates the smaller units surrounding them.
Zerg VS
  • Air-to-ground units, like Mutalisks and Brood Lords, can damage Ultralisks without risking any retribution.
  • Swarm Hosts can use their Locusts against Ultralisks, and run away before the Ultralisks can close the distance.
Protoss VS
  • Immortals are effective counters against Ultralisks. They deal extensive damage, and benefit from exceptional armor.
  • As mentioned above, spreading out ground infantry units can help minimize damage from Ultralisks’ “cleave” attacks.
  • Flying units, such as Void Rays, Carriers and even Motherships, can perform extremely effectively against Ultralisks, who won’t be able to reach them and will suffer from their attacks.
