Void Ray

The reunification of the Aiur Protoss and the Dark Templar has allowed the two groups to combine their divergent technologies, and their collaboration has produced astonishing new developments. The Void Ray is built around the newly developed prismatic core, which serves as a virtually eternal power source. When the Void Ray has locked onto a target and deployed its flux field projectors, it can shoot searing beams of energy that grow exponentially more powerful over time. Even heavily armored structures and warships have been incinerated by the Void Ray, leading some Terrans to believe that it will eventually replace the Carrier as the flagship of the Protoss fleet.

General Strategy

 • Armored craft that can attack air and ground targets.
 • Highly effective against armored units.
 • Vulnerable against large numbers of enemy units.
 • Void Ray sneak attacks against enemy headquarters can be devastating.
 • Use the Prismatic Alignment ability against armored units to deal extra damage to them.

Countermeasures

VS Terran
 • Launch Vikings; their long air-to-air range will make it easy to bring Void Rays down.
 • Use large groups of Marines with Stimpacks and Medivac support.
 • Build Missile Turrets around your Command Center as a temporary deterrent.
VS Zerg
 • Spawn Mutalisks; be sure to focus fire.
 • Assemble a large number of Hydralisks.
 • Build Spore Crawlers around your Hatchery as a temporary deterrent.
VS Protoss
 • Engage with Stalkers. Research the Blink ability in order to move away when Prismatic Alignment is activated. Engage again while the ability cools down.
 • Phoenixes are great against Void Rays, which are too slow to outrun them.
 • Build Photon Cannons around your Nexus as a temporary deterrent.

prismatic alignment should be changed to energy instead of cooldown, then they could be feedbacked by HT. PvP matches are currently a void race snorefest... stalkers melt like halucinations to void alignment...

@Dragonosh: Phoenix > Voids. All you need is some micro, hit and run (don't engage when alignment is active) + range upgrade (switch low hp phoenix to the back of the group and they'll still be within range to hit the voids) = GG voids.

@Eternity: it was obviously because you didnt have enough, did you know that 20 mutas cost the same as only 8 voids? 20 mutas killed 8 voidrays and only lost 7, its safe to say mutas >>>>> Voids

@Eternity: Indeed, mutas and, overall, any cheap anti-air unit in sufficient numbers is devastating against void rays. A Squad of let's say 40 marines (2000 minerals) with about 10 medics (1k resources min/gas) can easily wipe the 8 void rays you can purchase with 3,200 resources with focus fire, no even need to kite, attack head-on. Mutas are great against them because they're fast, cheap and since they're not armoured they don't take extra damage from prismatic alignment.

@Haro: you need 2 vikings per void, which is the same supply and gas but the 2 vikings cosst 50 mins more than the 2 voids, but the thing is vikings have 9 range voids only have 6, u can kite and win, if they activate charge you can fly away because vikings move faster then go back and fight.

tbh, i think Prismatic Alignment is a very bad design.
i would prefer increasing their attack range (say +2) rather than their damage output.

This thing is insanely powerful vs buildings. I played a 4v4 match last night and went mass void rays. I got maxed out with 46 rays and a bunch of probes(I was like the only person who took a third). This was on Megaton, so the bases are really close. I timed myself and it took 1 minute 45 seconds to blow up the main buildings and production facilities of all 4 players. The other person (or other 3, 2 of them quit) on my team made just zealots and stalkers. I'm not saying I am a good player, I am saying 46 voids cleared 4 players in 2 min.

@Dragonosh: You are my kind of player. When I play Protoss, Mass Void Ray is my favorite move. Every time I succeeded in doing it has been a battle won. Wonder if this will last come LotV...?

I once played a custom game 2v2 as Protoss. I had a Zerg ally and both of our enemies were Protoss if I remember correctly. The settings allowed 300 max supply and I think the Void Rays had been set to an extra psi requirement, but I still massed them until I reached max psi. In the late-game, I was scouting a point in the last remaining enemy's base for my Zerg ally to spawn a Nydus Worm, but things got too hairy when I got much closer (which is what I prepared for by scouting with all of my Void Rays BTW) and the enemy Protoss has a large army and due to the settings, I think he had plenty of Photon Cannons placed.

In the end, I had a much smaller group of Void Rays left when the battle was over, but I sealed my duo's victory in what was ultimately another Mass Void Ray landslide. And I am actually still a beginner at this whole game. It just goes to show that when fighting Protoss, it is best to attack quickly in case they may be massing Void Rays. I stand by what I learned from the user I know in person taught me that I mentioned some comments below: Nothing can stop a fleet of Buku Void Rays. (For any and all readers who may not be familiar with the word "buku", it means "A LOT")

@TriAQuadC: I am on a 6 game 4v4 winning streak with mass voids, and now I can add tempests to it :)
It only seems to work in ffa and 4v4 though, sometimes in 1v1 or 2v2

I believe that the Void Ray will become a vital if not essential Unit in the new era or heart of the swarm. However, I don't enjoy the fact that corruptors are still stronger than void rays in my opinion. There supposed to be inferior -it says so up there. They cost more money and time to produce than the corruptors. The guy under me at least agrees he can defeat them with corruptors too. Who thinks this is true?

@XELNAGA: Well in a stats race, the void ray still wins. When their beam is fully charged up, it is a force to be reckoned with. The supposed counters at least from my personal experience are only useful en masse. Pulling something from Team Liquid's wiki on the VR A critical mass of ten fully charged Void Rays has a DPS of 133.33 and 266.66, against non-armored and armored targets respectively. This can kill most buildings in a few seconds (e.g., a Hatchery in less than 5 seconds) and destroy a small base in less than 30 seconds. That in and of itself is pretty frightening to think about that they can destroy a base that fast. With fully charged beams, they have a damage output on par with or greater than a siege tank in siege mode and can destroy a base faster than a mass of banelings from personal experience. I'm not good with numbers so again, if someone has something to the contrary, I'd love to see it.

Just so I could make sure that I saw both sides of the story and wasn't incredibly biased, I even used a mass void ray build and found the same thing when I used them. I beat a very hard level in 15 minutes with the ray where with zerg and terran, it always takes multiple unit compositions. I didn't bother to take on the elite because I would rather get it with my go to race and take the harder route but I dare say it is possible. If I mass anything on the other races, the overall result is laughable. Looking back at the replay, I also found that my friends macro and micro were lower than mine and they hadn't focus fired quite as well as I had. If they had, I wouldn't have won. I didn't go counting them but I want to say that i had 40 3/3 corruptors and they had 33 3/3/2 VRs so it was about even. I'm honestly not complaining about them too much because the comments about mass void rays are true. If your opponent can pull this off against you, you deserve to get squished at least on zerg from my experience. I deserved the times that I lost to them because I didn't have the right build. My complaint about them being the go to unit now for the protoss still stands.

I know people hate these comments but I also stand by the thought that void rays are a little op. They can be countered and I have done it with corruptors, corruption and focus fire but I have single handedly watched someone mass void rays and stomp on an Insane AI with ease. It eliminates all of the challenge for getting that achievement for starters. I've never seen any other race be able to mass one unit to such a ridiculous gain. If someone can provide me with a video link proving me wrong, I welcome it. I'm actually not asking for much of a nerf. If they even would lose some of their damage upon transferring to a new target rather than being at the full amount on focus fire, it might feel like a more winnable fight. True enough, TvP and PvP have plenty of options which are much more effective but with zerg, it seems like by the time you have finished spawning all those corruptors to counter, the cost has left you a little high and dry for building any sort of ground force to go on the offensive. Using corruptors is pretty nice if you have something to mop up the rest but you still have to mix units against a unit that seems perfectly fine on its own. This may just be the rant of a bronze leaguer who misses the scourge anti air so my apologies to those who are rolling their eyes. It's just something that I noticed.

@EugeneTwo: Found it: "Prismatic Alignment" increases damage towards armored units by 6, lasts for 20 seconds, and has a 1 minute cooldown. Oh, and by the way, voidrays no longer have to charge up, but they have a longer cooldown when switching targets. In other words, All Your Base Are Belong To Us.

In my experience (while short) and based on what another SC2 user I know face-to-face has taught me, if you have a large number of VR's, almost absolutely NOTHING can stop them, even if they focus fire. Plenty of time consumption may be incurred, but it can be pulled off if you have the resources and some extra Stargates, it is VERY well worth it.
